July is the worst sports month of the year, hands down. Head down. Nap time.

Here's the pared-down menu: Wimbledon, where they wind up playing on a surface that resembles a vacant lot in the Bronx. The stunning Sharapova has grown too lovely and too tall to win the majors. So what's to watch?
Then there's the British Open, which is like playing golf on an iceberg. Hit a grounder and hope. The best thing about the British Open is that whiny Euros (most all schooled in the good old USA!) seldom win their own tournament. And it's always fun if it rains sideways from two directions.

Other than that, summertime is when you prepare for football.

We've already put point- spreads on two big games -- OU minus nine versus Miami, Texas minus five versus OU.

And here is the start of a list of things we hope not to see or hear this season, or ever more.

1. A pinhead fan or blockhead radio host say that a team has been holding back something special for a particular foe.

Note: Unless you're Boise playing OU, trick plays work about 1 percent of the time. Tough-guy teams don't think they need to con to win.

2. OU is going to throw more to its tight ends.

Note: It's starting to look like it doesn't know how.

3. Lee Corso will play head games again.

Note: Somebody should put a mouse in the Cornhusker head.

4. Somebody is scouting the new TU coach in game one.

5. That Mack Brown own Stoops.

Note: From seemingly out of nowhere, that coaching rivalry is about a draw isn't it.

6. That Stoops is crankier than ever.

7. That the Nebraska and Texas A&M coaches are in trouble!

Note: We need them right where they are!

8. That the English Building at OSU will be demolished in favor of an indoor volleyball practice facility.

9. That we need a playoff.

Note: Never happen, so hush.

10. That easy non-conference scheduling is the way to go.

One we'll listen to on the radio, former OSU coach Pat Jones, is a sissy-schedule proponent -- thinks going home and home with Georgia is a huge mistake.

Thing is, you sure don't hear Georgia crying: Oh, no, not Oklahoma State!

Guess what, good players love being on television. Fans love playing good teams. Poor, poor coaches, having to play Georgia home and home. Maybe millions in salary will easy the agony. Here's the story. You want play with the big boys, beat one of them.

Interesting, witty comments, pick. In reply I'll just say....point number 1...no comment; point number 2 - the Sooners will throw more to their tight ends come September - guaranteed. With the experienced Finley and the phenomenal Gresham available, why wouldn't the Sooners toss high-percentage passes to two guys who can pick the high ones off like a giraffe grabbing leaves off a tree top?...point number 3. Corso is a sideshow; the network keeps him on as a curiousity and an attention grabber...no one p*sses more fans off on national TV than Lee Corso, now that Jerry Glanville is at Portland State and doesn't have a venue for irritation on a national level. number 4...no comment. number 5...winning thrice from Stoops with only two in a row does not entitle Brown to a deed; but if OU doesn't break the Longhorns chokehold this season then they just might have built themselves a psychological barrier for a few years to come. number 6...Why shouldn't Stoops be cranky? After embarrassing himself against Boise State, TCU, Tulsa (nearly), and Oregon over the past couple of years he sees a verbal haymaker coming everytime a reporter asks a question...even in Oklahoma. number 7...of course Franchione and Callahan are in trouble. Neither is capable of taking those institutions to the pinnacle where their fans expect them to be. number 8...As long as literature such as 'The Bridges of Madison County', 'The Journeyman's Guide to Animal Husbandry' and anything written by Rod McKuen are English degree prerequisites at Oklahoma State, who cares whether they demolish their English building? number 9...I'm in vociferous verbal agreement, and number 10...what worked for Bill Snyder won't necessarily work for everyone. Incidently, it also worked for Bear Bryant at Alabama in the seventies when the SEC was, ahem, a bit of a joke.

Seriously, WG: They've promised to toss to the tight ends more every year. Course, more is what, four passes? They've even gone through different co-ordinators without throwing more to the tight ends! This might be a simpler solution: Eliminate the position!

WG (6 years ago)
Scarey when you think about it...under Switzer, the best tight end to ever not play in the midwest - Keith Jackson - caught, what, twenty some passes his senior year? But that was Switzer and his 'bone. Your earlier comment about the brevity of the OU offensive playbook was telling...and true. Rather than stretch the minds and abilities of their talent they dumb-it-down so their quarterback and o-line can get it down pat early...nevermind that opposing defenses can do the same. But passing to the TE this year is, frankly, a no-brainer. Gresham is possibly the best tight end on any campus since Jackson and if the offensive gurus just south of Moore, Oklahoma, have any sense whatsoever, they'll use a tight end set to do more than block.

I think the Picker has a valid point that OU says they are going to throw to the TE every year, but just hasn't done so. This has been going on since Trent Smith's senior year.

That said, one thing that may bode well for more tosses to the TE is the youth at quarterback, who may lob a lot of jump tosses to the TE this year. One cause for concern: the highly celebrated OU receiving corps may see fewer balls this year, with Halze and Bradford running around in the backfield all game long.

Pat Jones...

I wish that I could take 3 hours of his terribly-paused drivel and condense it into a normal 30 minute articulation that wouldn't drive me to hurt myself. I am sure he is a nice fella...but seriously...it is DOG-GONE sports "talk"

I could have a quicker conversation with my 7 yr old nephew describing the finer points of "The Incredibles"

Brown has never beat a great OU team. Stoops has beat several great Texas teams.
WG (6 years ago)
Good point, Bopper. Actually, those Texas teams weren't great...but with the talent Brown had on campus they should have been great.
JOHN (6 years ago)
Thats right guys.NO ONE has ever beat a great OU team. Oh, they've cheated us and got lucky at times, but NEVER have they beat us fair and square. I like all the pro-Sooner posts on here. Reminds me alot of Al on the Sports Animal. Now there's a real OU hero.

Bopper: You can't blame Mack Brown for out-recruiting Stoops the years he beat him.

Has everybody heard that one of the ESPY nominations for best game was, natch, OU-Boise. The ESPYs are pretty much a bunch of goobers playing Hollywood. But the OU-Boise game will win that prize as close to unanimously as you can get! And Stoops wonders why fans can't forget about Boise and focus on OU's most important game last year, K-State upsetting Mack the Butter Knife.

Couple of notes: Dean and Al of the Sports Chipmunks seem to think that OU's recruiting is great, that OU's team this year should be great, that next year's team should be great, and that the team after that should be at least as great, perhaps greater; thought you'd want to know.

And try as we might, we simply can't stand The Closer on Turner. The fake southern accent is a pain. Plus the woman looks like a catfish.

John, I wasn't sure whether you were trying to be funny in a heavy-handed way or just slow-minded...until your last blog entry. Thanks for clearing it up.
world picker (6 years ago)
Hey John, funny you should mention one of America's, no, the world's, great radio operations, The Sports Magpies. We just did a blurb in the next to last blog about a patented Sports Magpie scoop. Hope you enjoy it. How about that morning show, yes sir, weighty.

Speaking of mornings, if any of you really care about improving yourselves, turn immediately to Robin & Company on CNN Headline News. She is mind-boggling on every level that counts and makes people like Katie Couric look like the pretender she is. Take one listen and look at this Robin Meade's show that runs from five to nine, central. It's impossible to take just one.<.>

For the football "player" (not on the field, heh), July is research time. Time to see who returns what at what position, who plays who where and after/before what opponent, and so on while the mind is clear and the season hasn't caused emotions to mask the truth. Having said that, it's too early to worry about picking winners, that is until the players on the field (both new and returning) give us some past performances to go by (like the horse racing angle!).

Take note...the number of returning starters means nothing if those returning can't hit the beach while their feet are wet, can't cover a WR if they sprouted wings, etc. North Texas could return 22 starters and it still won't win them all. Remember kids, college football is as competitive as ever, and the line between winning and losing when two near equals match up is a fine one. Good and bad breaks will come, officials will make mistakes (see Oregon), etc. True...no team will win it all playing a patty cake schedule, but neither will a team without some good luck along the way. I am not saying that good teams must rely on luck and breaks...but we must all agree that several teams have the ability to win it all at the beginning of every year.

As for OU and the rankings, it sells mags and newspapers. Unfortunately, the polls are a big part of who plays who at the end, so the preseason rankings mean something. OU may indeed be overrated...but others likely are as well. As a college football fan, I would like to know that my team has a chance every year to bring home the crystal. Sooner fans remember when this was the case for decades...wasn't the case during the dark decade of the 90's...and is now the case again. As fans, that all we can ask for.

As for scheduling, OSU fans need to speak up. I am a Sooner ticket holder, and I drive 3.5 hours to watch a game. I will not make that drive to see OU play Utah St. I will make a weekend of OU-Miami. Should OU play 4 toughies? No. The Big 12 takes care of that. But OU should play one or two toughies and a couple a decent foes. OSU took a good step in playing Georgia. They've played several big opponents off and on in the past decade. To sell tickets and stay on TV...which draws recruits as heavily as a new facility...they must continue to play big opponents.

Finally, Stoops certainly has lost his big game edge as of late. It was unreasonable, though, to assume OU could keep up that pace. Stoops is a top coach and his staff like to work for him. His teams have a great combined record and the number of post New Year Bowl game trips are impressive. Hopefully, his staff will continue to keep the Sooners in NC hunts and adjust in the face of future inevitable big games.

If everything is so heavenly in Sports Animal Land, Jeremy, WHY IS STOOPS SO TESTY?! Where is his sense of humor? Could it be that OU is not the elite team it was when Heupel had the ball, and that the coach knows it?

Jeremy (6 years ago)
I am not a mind reader, so I don't know why Stoops is being testy with the media. He's never been a media darling. I'd imagine the recent losses in big games plays some role in it. Many coaches, college and pro and from many sports, get testy with the media on a regular basis. He's a far cry from Bobby Knight...

Let's all remember that he and all "superhero" coaches are human beings...they have weaknesses as well as strengths. Stoops' biggest challenge has always been his media relations. That's not a big story. A bigger story, to me, is his defense's recent inability to win big games. Bad call or not, Oregon shouldn't have reached the endzone late. Boise St. shouldn't have made 4th and 18.

And the entire secondary is back!!!!!
Jeremy (6 years ago)
At the risk of minimizing the importance of good technique from DB's, I'll point out that great pass defense always starts with pressure on the QB. We've all seen great secondaries chewed up late in a game while in the prevent coverage. Former greats Derrick Strait and Andre Woolfolk and Roy Williams were embarrassed by OSU's Fields to Woods a couple of times...cause Fields had time to throw.

Am I worried about the lack of consistency from the Sooner db's? Uh, yeah. I am more concerned about the play of the DL and LB's. You know, when Stoops brought his zone blitzes into the Big 12, noone had an answer for it. While it is still quite effective, opposing coaches are learning ways to make plays against it. This is the chess game within the football game. Stoops and Co, need to adjust...not throw out the schemes...but tweak them. Players must make plays as well...

I thought Bob Griese said it best during color commentary of an OU game late in the NC season. "Give me a team that blocks, tackles, and makes the plays they are supposed to make"...or something to this effect. OU hasn't done this in the spotlight lately...

WG (6 years ago)
Nicely stated, Jeremy.

Great pass defense starts with great coaching.

What's up with everybody saying the punchless Ohio State center has to go first in the draft tomorrow? I'd take Durant first in a second.

And: sounds like only the people in OKC think OKC will have a team next year.

Who cares if the old english building is destroyed!!!! Morel is in so bad of shape. They are building a new English building. So all the Cowboy haters back off at least we don't have to cheat to win.Or pay players to win, or illegally recruit to win. You comment saying Georgia isn't scared of OSU you be wrong again. Look at all the people picking OSU too win that game. OSU is on it's way to becoming a big program. If uo was so tough why did they turn down a home and home with LSU. Because they only like playing Big programs when they are down.
