Stupidest of the Weekend
Published: 7/11/2011 12:08 PM
Last Modified: 7/11/2011 12:08 PM

Here's a new feature to pass the time until football season: Who was just the stupidest.

First runnerup: Ohio State and it's pinhead athletic director who threw its ball cap under the bus, surrendering meaningless victories from last year while hoping the NCAA can be easily conned.

That wasn't a self-emposed penalty. That was a self-imposed joke. Here's a penalty for those cheaters: Loss of scholarships, loss of bowls, horrific recruiting seasons.

Stupidest of them all: The people who wanted coach Nolan fired.

How do you anonymous pipsqueaks feel now? You got your wish, then lost 100-20 or something like that.

In close-up retrospect, it appears that coach Nolan was better than anybody imagined, that he deserved better.

According to the PR hogwash after the new coach's first loss, everything is great, the players can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The light being caused by coach Nolan's tail lights running for his sanity.

We know what's next.
Goodbye Shock.

Now there's a decent idea.

Nolan rollin' down the highway was the best thing for the Tulsa WNBA team....

Good thing the garage door didn't break those tail lights on his way out....

The Tulsa team is the worst in the WNBA & the Phoenix team is currently the hottest team in the league & the outcome would've been the same with or without the much loved former TU Coach/Arkansas hoops icon....

This column supports neither the Shock nor the Thunder which tells me that there is a problem from within regarding professionals.... I wonder why that is.... Maybe it's just professional basketball.... Or could it be just plain ignorance regarding professional sports & professional athletes....

Who knows, I know I don't, I'm just an amateur blogger reading a professional sports writers' column who gets paid to be cartoonish....

A) Was never anonymous like you hiding behind a blog, Mr. Cronely. Who's the pipsqueek?
B) I'm a season ticket holder and spent money. Did you? Probably not... so your opinion doesn't matter.
C) You, unfairly, judge Teresa Edwards on ONE game BUT, heaven forbid, we judge Nolan on FORTY FIVE GAMES. Of which, THIRTY EIGHT were losses.
D) Want facts? Game two AT Minnesota was a 10 point loss. Game 10 AT HOME was a THIRTY POINT LOSS. Improvement? I don't think so, Jay.

Your old buddy Nolan doesn't have the stones anymore to make it happen. This team was DONE with him.

Maybe in your REAL column that has your NAME on it, you will wear your big boy undies, stop being a pipsqueak and put your thoughts out there for ALL to see.

Anonymous... Look in the mirror, Jay.

The final score without coach Nolan?

He is among the luckiest people around today.

itsmebige (last year)
That's all you've got, Jay?

Consider Shock fans AND Nolan lucky then!

I'm done. Have a great day!

Making somebody anonymous angry about being called a pipsqueak, this along with the temperature is one for the record books.

itsmebige (last year)
I'm not angry, Mr. Picker. I just think that your attempt at incensing fans was weak. 7-38? Would you accept that at your job? Nope. Just let it go and let's all move on. I tell ya what, I'll go by a paper tomorrow! Cool?

The temps.. that's a WHOLE other story! Where's a blizzard when you need one?

Nolan was great for this city.

To be dumped uncerimoniously is not respectful.

The heat is on the successor.
itsmebige (last year)
You, Mr. Picker, of ALL people, should know that sports is about "what have you done for me lately". By your theory, out of respect and the goodness in my heart, I should have watched my hard earned money get flushed down the tube season after season becaue he was GOOD FOR THE CITY in the 80's? By the way, he NEVER got past the first round of the NCAA tourney, did he? He's in coaching.. it happens. It's the risk you take in his position. It IS why they get a contract, correct? You want me to feel sorry for Nolan when he left, probably with a check in hand. The Shock are left holding the bag. I think you have this whole argument wrong. I think this was an old fashioned ambush by Mr. Richardson.

You didn't answer my question, if you were 7-38, would that be acceptable in your office?
itsmebige (last year)
One last thing and I PROMISE I'll get off this soap box...

"To be dumped uncerimoniously is not respectful." -- You act like he was Tom Landry. He won a NIT tourney in the 80's. He didn't make it past the first round of the NCAA tourney, while at Tulsa. Build a statue for him at 11th & Harvard BUT... don't judge Shock fans that want to win a few ball games.

Your arguement holds ZERO water. You're just upset that an 80's icon, of YOURS, could'nt cut it anymore. It's 2011, Mr. Picker, let Tom Landry go.. it will all be ok.

:-)

Picker, how can you judge Coach Teresa's performance on ONE game and less than 48 hours after Nolan steps down? I understand a 39 point loss is getting whipped pretty badly. But the Shock are in a mass of disarray right now. It's going to take time for the team to get back on track, and Teresa Edwards is the most qualified to do just that. Five time Olympic Gold Medalist, Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee, 2012 US Olympic Team Chef de Mission, and the main influence behind Sheryl Swoopes return from retirement. In my eyes, there's no one better for this situation, despite never being a head coach until now.

The Shock's situation is very similar to the OKC Thunder's inaugural season. They started 1-12 before PJ Carlisimo was fired and Scotty Brooks was promoted to head coach. Brooks, also a former player and was never an NBA head coach until that moment, took over and look at him now. 2009-10 Coach of the Year and has taken the Thunder to two consecutive playoffs, including this past season's Western Conference Finals. Even I was surprised how by quickly OKC progressed. I'm pretty sure you were saying the same things about Brooks back then like you are about Edwards now. What makes you think she can't do something similar?

Nolan Richardson's icon status for Tulsa does nothing to improve his 7-38 record with the Shock. I'm sorry Mr. Picker, but Nolan's way past his prime. You can respect someone like Nolan all you want, but if it's not working, then it's time to move on. It seems everyone in the whole world besides you was surprised by all the trades Nolan made last year. He traded away quality players, championship caliber players, just to find fresh meat to mold into his system. Talk about being set in your ways, Nolan takes it to the absolute extreme. Despite all the trades, he still wasn't winning. So using the good old simple process of elimination, he was next to go. I also wanted Nolan gone ever since halfway into last season. His performance this season, or lack thereof, further proves my point.

Teresa has a lot of work ahead of her. A number of Shock fans and season ticket members, including myself and Eric, are confident that she is up to the task. So do us all a favor, Picker, and give Teresa a fair shake. Give her time to coach out the rest of this season. Give her time to prove what she can do.

She won't win with the current roster.

What is Tulsa's, and especially the Picker's obsession with Nolan Richardson? Solid coach, did his most noteworthy work at Arkansas...the guy wasnt John Wooden, take it easy...
zilck (last year)
Give it a month.

It's the Shock...it's the wnba...NOBODY CARES!!

I would say that I hope the Shock just goes away, but I just don't care enough about it. They can stay, they can go...they are so irrelevant, it just doesn't matter.
itsmebige (last year)
@goldenhurricane I care. University of Tulsa Mens basketball draws just about the same as the Shock.
215312 (last year)
itsmebige, you cant compare TU draws more 2,000 something and one other big note, its in there own gym not the 17,000 something BOK. I wonder how many bigger shows could really create some meaningful $$$$ for the city????????
