EL PASO, Texas — So far, we're five minutes from kickoff and the Sun Bowl has been highly entertaining.
After The Pride did its usual pregame routine, the Stanford band, which included a guitar player carrying a plastic guitar with no strings beating his instrument with a drum stick, spelled out "OK!", "Texas" and "Defence". The drum major was dressed like a skunk. Don't know if he's making a reference to Rhett Bomar there or what.
"American Idol" runner-up David Archuleta, who's giving a halftime concert, sang the National Anthem, followed by "God Bless America."
Minutes before kickoff, the press box public announcer revealed, "This is the first time at the Sun Bowl they've had a flying camera over the field, and they will be parachuting in in just a few minutes. So that should be interesting."
Thankfully, eight Army paratroopers hit the drop zone perfectly. The final two wore football helmets and bore flags from Stanford and Oklahoma.
Both teams looked pretty excited in warm-ups. A whole bunch of fireworks were set off as the teams entered the field, smoking up the beautiful view of Sun Bowl Stadium literally carved into the mountains.
Condoleezza Rice, a Stanford alum and former chancellor tossed the coin, joined by Stanford's 1970 Heisman Trophy winner Jim Plunkett.
OU kicks off. . . .
