Super Blog No. 2: Is Two The Magic Number?
Published: 1/20/2009 1:28 PM

Ben Roethlisberger and Kurt Warner aren't just squaring off for a Vince Lombardi Trophy. They are going head-to-head for a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, perhaps.
Both Big Ben and Warner have already won a Super Bowl. History shows that any quarterback who wins two Super Bowls is virtually guaranteed to get a bust in Canton.
In that club are John Elway, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Bob Griese and Bart Starr.
Tom Brady has won three Super Bowls and that will make him a lock for the hall after he decides to retire.
The only quarterback ever to start and win two Super Bowls and still be excluded from the Hall of Fame? Jim Plunkett.
If Warner wins another Super Bowl, is he HOF worthy?
It would be hard to argue against him since he would be the only player in league history to quarterback two franchises to Super Bowl championships.
If Big Ben wins another Super Bowl, is he HOF worthy?
He's still got a lot of years to build a case. Roethlisberger is only five years into his career and he won more games in his first five years than any quarterback in NFL history. Does he benefit from a great defense? Sure. But he's also got just enough mojo that he finds a way to make plays when necessary.
Big Ben did not play great in his first Super Bowl win (the best pass thrown was by a Steeler wide receiver). He will need to bring an A-game this time if he wants to be viewed as more than someone who just manages the offense.

Why does the media, all media, use the last name of most every quarterback except Ben? Is it because Roethlisberger is such a long and goofy looking name? We wouldn't write about the Eagles, Cowboys, Saints or Pats QBs and call them Donavan, Tony, Drew or Tom. I'm guilty too... I'll use the same process next week but why is Ben so special?

Trust me: Headline writers love "Big Ben" instead of "Roethlisberger" because you can actually fit a verb into the headline.
