Sutton Needs Cure

Sean Sutton was raspy, but managed to talk his way through a post-Bedlam press conference.
Sweat rolled down his forehead during the question and answer session and the perspiration had more to do with health than a five-game string of close-call defeats.
After Sutton left the interview room, he walked up stairs to OSU's locker room and coughed with every step, coughing loud enough that bystanders began asking if he was OK.
Sutton is ultra-competitive. But someone (good luck trying) needs to convince him that it's OK to take a rest and let somebody else worry about putting Cowboy hoops players through drills until he shakes whatever is bothering him. He described his illness as "walking pneumonia" on Saturday and likely will have chest X-rays today, one day after a three-point Bedlam defeat.
Maybe the 10-10 Cowboys will get well at some point this season. But Sutton needs to make it a priority to get well first.

To me he did not look much different on the bench than he usually does. Ultra competitve is a potivite trate. Self desrtuctive is not.

I have to wonder if he is just dessparate to win, or if is trying to prove himself in the shadow of his father. Or worse, the proximity of his brother.

Sean does need to take a rest. But resting up will be useless if doesn't take time to look at what he's doing to himself. He might just become a better coach if he's honest with himself about the pressure he may be putting on himself. Is he comparing his accomplishments to thsoe of family members. Maybe not on the bench last night, but at other times that ought to be non basketball or family time, or just prep time for games, or reflecting on games after they're over.

I went to school with Sean (had a few classes together) at OSU. He is most definitely competitive and absolutely lives for basketball. But there is no question this job is wearing on him. I understand the, "he is a major college coach and this is part of the territory," argument. I also firmly believe the man can be successful at this level. But it will not happen until he coaches somewhere else. coaching your alma mater and looking at the words, "Eddie Sutton Court" painted on the floor at GIA is enough to smother anyone. I hope he gets healthy and can let James Dickey run the team for a little while until he recovers.

I agree that Sean needs to make getting well a priority.Having a sick coach is not a asset for our OSU's struggling basketball team.Even though I have been disappointed in the team's season I believe that they are capable of making a turnaround. In some areas they already are improved...like freethrow shooting in the recent bedlam game. One area that I believe that needs improving ,is in their mindset about winning on the road and winning in general..Their is no reason why our team cannot win on the road or just win period. But until the team gets it out of their heads that they cannot win elsewhere other than at home ,they will not.If you do not believe you can win ,it becomes a self fulfilling prophesy and you will find a way to lose ,like we have been. I believe, though, that their are better days ahead for our team.Go Pokes.
