TU AD Ross Parmley: From 'brunch' to 'potluck'

Times are tough everywhere I guess. Just look at the University of Tulsa.

New -- as long as you consider less than a year new -- athletic director Ross Parmley invited the media to campus Wednesday for his first informal gathering of the football season.

With former AD Bubba Cunningham, those meetings were the "Bubba Brunch." Now they're "Potluck with Parmley." Please let the folks in the TU athletic department know I'd like my casserole dish back.

OK, so we didn't really have to bring a covered dish. But Parmley definitely falls short of his predecessor in quality of luncheon-name alliteration -- and yes, I'm still a little bitter my title, "Pancakes with Parmley" was rejected.

After his first casual gathering with the Tulsa-area media, it's easy to pick up on other differences between Parmley and his former boss.

While Cunningham was engaging, he was also extremely polished. He could tell you something without really giving anything away.

Parmley seems more open -- or at least he has to work harder to keep from revealing something he shouldn't.

Like Cunningham, Parmley doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. He had a good sense of humor Wednesday about our own Dave Sittler's Sunday column (you can read it here.

So far, Parmley's in a pretty good spot. The university president who hired him is back on the job, the football team is poised for a championship-caliber season, and there's some excitement surrounding new basketball coach Danny Manning.

Parmley was hired to fix basketball, so his job performance will forever be linked with Manning.

Things don't look so good in that regard this year, but Manning and the men's team will get at least a year honeymoon.

After that, we'll have a better feel for how the Manning hire pans out.

If it's as good as Parmley hopes, the not-so-new AD will definitely have the final word -- and perhaps an improved name for his monthly luncheon.

Love the name "potluck". Implies a spontaniety that might have been missing with his predecessor, and it seems more homely and informal. Gives the impression you can come in, fix a plate, and ask anything you want about the Canes.
