TU Beats Dogs
Published: 11/1/2010 12:22 PM
Last Modified: 11/1/2010 12:22 PM

You'd have thought TU beat a team that will be bowl-eligible, a team that will at least have a winning record.

You'd have thought TU beat a team ranked in the top 75.

You'd have thought TU beat a team that had its starting quarterback for the game.

You'd have thought TU beat a team that had been good in the last, oh, 20 years.

You'd have thought TU beat a team that had a coach who knew what he was doing.

You'd have thought TU beat a team that wasn't mouring a tragic loss.

You'd have thought TU beat a team that had not just lost to Navy by 50.

TU beat a big-name school that has a lousy football team.

Period.

This is not to detract from the victory. It is simply to put it in perspective.

A big part of an improving program is keeping it real.

Here's another dose of reality: The OKC Thunder has been greatly overrated.

Miami is light years the best in the NBA, Lakers next.

The Thunder can't shoot straight from outside, is average inside, and hasn't improved since last year.

It is a good team, not great.

TU's greatest victory ever?

Maybe to all those looking to keep their jobs. Not to those who keep it real and know the history of such things as Orange Bowl wins.

Essentially, I agree, but for two points: 1) Kelly is a good coach and will turn the ND program around somewhat (i.e. ND will have 8-4 seasons, but they will not likely be a power ever again); ND plays a tough schedule, and was only a couple of plays away from being 6-2 before the TU game (though anybody - including Tulsa - can say just about the same thing; Many 3-8 teams are "just" a dozen plays from being 8-3).

Hi I'm the Picker and here's my weekly column
Run down TU
Run down OU
Run down the Thunder because of jealousy

To echo the Truth: Leave it to the Picker to crash TU's victory party over Notre Dame. Unbelievable. And so you are gonna judge the Thunder from a 2-1 start...? I think the season is 82 games..

C'mon PICKER. Give us a break. The balloon will pop soon enough. I think the last minute win over Texas A&M was bigger than this. We, however, do need a new coach. We need to get Kragthorpe and his son as a package.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Any of the wins over Arkansas were bigger than this.

Any of the wins over Oklahoma State.

The skill level of the opponent dictates how big a win is.

MexiMike (2 years ago)
Pick, perhaps you should have considered all of those elements regarding Notre Dame before you picked them to beat and cover the spread against TU.

Sounds like sour grapes to me.
Ignatz (2 years ago)
ND's string of picking clueless coaches continues. Only the refs kept them in the game at all.No, the "big" bowl wins, the Todd Starks-Ark win, at Florida, at Iowa, at Missouri, OSU-OU, home A&M were all much, much bigger wins. That being said, getting a game scheduled at all against this pompous/arrogant bunch (read comments from their supporters about how TU had the gall to be happy for beating them) makes it a sweet win. Of course Graham (who wants to obscure offensive failures and lousy pass defense) gilds the lilly, he wants to keep his job. Bubba, of course, wants a ND job.

somebody tell me why does the Picker always talk trash about the OKC thunder - ever since the nba has come to oklahoma the picker has had an attitude about it- it is because they made him look real stupid due to the outstanding success the team and the sport has had in OK? - wasnt OKC just about 1 second away from taking the world renown lakers to a 7 game series?

dcood, was the TU win over Notre Dame a good win? Yes. Was it one of the greatest wins in TU history? Not even close. Notre Dame hasn't been able to win big football games since Lou Holtz resigned after the 1996 season. This isn't your father's or grandfather's Notre Dame team. I like Brian Kelly. He's a good football coach, and I like he'll have success at ND. He made it to two consecutive BCS Bowl Games in his final 2 seasons at Cincy. This season under Butch Jones, Cincy probably won't even make a bowl game.

The Thunder is not a very good shooting team. Harden has potential but is still a raw talent. Cook has failed to live up to his potential thus far. As a result, opposing teams are going to play more 2-3, 3-2, and 1-3-1 zones, and dare them to shoot the three. Aldrich has an opportunity to be good on the inside, but is a far from finished product. I think they'll be the No. 6 seed in the West come playoff time.

I would say the TU win over A&M was the best win for TU, but this win is a big win for 2 reasons 1) THEY BEAT NOTRE DAME. Regardless of how much they are struggling, they are still Notre Dame, the game was still on NBC nationally. No matter how bad the Irish are playing they still have 7 Heisman trophy winners and 11 national championships
2) It is a signature win that will allow TU to continue to build. The number of athletes that saw that on NBC and now consider TU if recruited is immense. The A&M game was not on national TV, nor the OU game in '96, nor the Arkansas game 2 years ago. TU didn't build the program after the win vs. A&M and couldn't even build the rest of the season after beating OU in '96. TU has 4 games left this year and will be favored in 3 of them at home and will have a chance to beat Houston which would leave TU at 9-3. Much better than last year and we know the talent Graham has already gotten committed for next year (Langer, Sexton).

Notre Dame is down, but when was the last time TU won a game in front of 80,000 fans of the other team? How many times has TU played in front of 80,000 fans in the last decade?

the picker says "The skill level of the opponent dictates how big a win is".The skill level of the picker dictates he should not be taken seriously.

MexiMike, did you hear that Notre Dame's starting quarterback went out?

ND was the pick before the injury that dictated the outcome of the game.

Few can predict key injuries.

Be nice, and I might guarantee your beloved OSU over OU.

Let's face it: Neither team is very good. ND was able to make it close because of the periodic boo-boos of the TU quarterback (as expected), the missed easy field goal, the dropped catch in the end zone, and the absurd "home cooking" from the refs. Finally, this wasn't enough. The ND coach gave it away at the end by eschewing a chip-shot field goal by a superb kicker.

Jesus did his best, but he couldn't overcome all this. It seems that even Jesus' power is not unlimited.

I think the tv sports commentators were the only ones saying it was a significant win. Most realized it was just a "nice" win, nothing more.

The Heat is "light years" the best??? That would mean an 82-0 season, wouldn't it? Oh, wait, they already got clocked by Boston. Well, maybe 81-1, then?? Uh...don't think, so, Picker. They won't even get the 72 wins that the Bulls got when they set the record, and probably not more than somewhere in the mid-60s at best. The Lakers are still best, and will probably encounter the Heat in the Finals. Without a competent point guard, though, the Heat is only a big "potential" at present.

Did I miss something? Did TU lose? Dose of reality? No matter how bad Notre Dame is, they should have been able to roll their helmets onto the field and beat TU. Starting QB Pick? That is what seperated the teams in your pick? Doubtful. Think their second and third and fourth string QB wasn't more highly recruited then Kinne? We know Longhorn's Qbs were. So yea, it is a big win for the University of Tulsa, that is who we are discussing right? Your dose of reality is what? If not competing for National Title you should hang it up? You picked Notre Dame for the same reason we both would pick them again if they were playing tomorrow, they are twice as big and TU has only one or two players who have the speed Notre Dame has. Notre Dames fullbacks and tightends were bigger then TU's linemen. While nowhere near the biggest win in TU history, because some of us are old enough to have heard whispers or Orange, Sugar, Gator bowl teams, of undefeated Hurricane Teams, this was still a nice win for TU. Think Okie State will throw back a win against Texas if they should win just because Texas is down? Texas should still field more talent then OSU. So yea that would be a big win too.

n terms of nat’l press & coverage &,PR, TU winning @ South Bend is “easily’ the biggest win in the last last 50 yrs for the program.
TU has beaten better teams, but no one on the nat’l stage w/ as big of following as ND, plus regardless of record, not many teams walk away from South Bend w/ a victory.

Snicker is right, outside shooting & “No inside freight train” are Thunder’s weakness, but Lakers are still the team to beat for the NBA championship. Thunder though does play good man to man “D” and they can out quick alot of opponents.
MexiMike (2 years ago)
Pick, haha, yeah I saw that. And I agree that a midgame injury to the starting QB could be devastating to a team. The rest of your points, though, could certainly have been taken into account.

And easy on the Bedlam talk! My Pokes have to get past Baylor and Texas first.

With that said, it's a good thing you never made an official bet on the over/under of OSU winning six games...

Is the tragic loss you are referring to the 127 Million dollar drop off in donations because the had the ZOBAMA speak?
dcood (2 years ago)
Amazing part is that Brian Kelly, after the game, still defended his decision to throw a fade into the end zone... saying 'why not try it vs a 5'9" corner?'...Because your team was only down 1 and your FG kicker has yet to miss a kick in his career!!!

geeee pic-man. Let TU have a little love. Yes, Notre Dame is down and has been for about 10 years or so but come one ANY win by TU on the road is great. The sports resources between the two schools is bigger than the national debt. And yes at times TU did not look good but they beat Notre Dame in South Bend. They still may get beat by 50 at Houston or they could.........TBA !
Ogre (2 years ago)
Even though I think ND has not been good at football for some time I still did not think TU would beat them @southbend. Thank you TU for proving ND football is done. It was a good win at a historic place. If you believe the recruiting rankings TU doesn't even have someone on their roster that would sniff the feild for the Irish. Ov
The Picker (2 years ago)
SigBob, I'll take the Heat over the Fakers for dinner. One of 'em has to win it all.

RE TU's signature victory: Doesn't the greatest win in school history have to come against a team that has a winning record?

The Notre Dame coach is a joke, saying he'd do the same thing again, turn down an 18-18 field goal kicker in place of a scrub noodle-arm qb throwing one up for grabs. ND will be down and out as long as he is there. Though the qb who got hurt and left the game is a good player. And along those hard-headed lines, Ranger pitcher Lee showed his backside, saying he didn't pitch around hitters, ever.

Walt Flanagan (2 years ago)
While everyones discussing the game can anyone answer me why the clock never stopped on NDs final drive, with 2 plays from 2 minutes n 35 to one minute 28 the one handed catch then outta bounds and the next dump then run outta bounds never stopped the clock. I realize TU picked it off 2 plays later but anyhoo , just wonderin if anyone noticed.
MexiMike (2 years ago)
I think the TU/Notre Dame outcome did more to hurt Notre Dame's image than it did to help TU's.

Nationally, people will say "Did you see Notre Dame lose to Tulsa? What a joke." rather than "Did you see Tulsa beat Notre Dame? What a win!"
