TU Coaches Spit the Bit
Published: 11/3/2008 1:06 PM

If you want to be considered as one of the big boys of college football, then you have to call plays like you belong at that level.

If you have a good quarterback, you don't let him lead you to the opponent's ten-yard line and then yank him from the field and start running plays like you were playing Pine Cone High.

If you're playing somebody who can run, you're paid to know that; and if you have to run something from the Disneyland playbook, one of those kooky reverses, just do it the one time, take your loss, and get back to grown-up football.

About the only thing worse than the play calling Saturday was the radio broadcast. We've been big fans of Bruce Howard. But Saturday Bruce and his sidekick, Whiny the Clown, were terrible, sniping non-stop at imagined referee mistakes, and blaming clock malfunctions on cheaters and conspirators.

TU had the top of the football world to gain by beating an inferior opponent.

It was probably the most disasterous loss in TU football history. Own-up, people.

In other football news, OU has a one percent chance to make it to the national championship game.

Oklahoma State has a two percent chance to make it to the national championship game.

Teams being cheated by the BCS this time around are USC and Texas.

This would be fun: An OU-Boise rematch. All those Boise jokers darting around the field, proposing to girlfriends, mugging for the camera. OU would beat Boise State so severely that it might consider painting the field crimson and dropping football.

PS: Oklahoma State plus looks like the play at Tech; don't forget, Nebraska had Tech down and almost out in Lubbock.

I agree...play calling was atrocious and I thought the officiating was fair in the TU game save for 2 calls. One holding penalty that seemed to be a clear make-up call for the silly, made-up unsportsmanlike penalty against the Arkansas player who ran back the kickoff. Not holding and it was a phantom call. 2nd was the spot on the 4th and forever. The BALL was clearly past the line to gain in real time and on the replays. The official marked the ball where the player's foot went out of bounds. That said, I do not think they cost TU the game as they had numerous opportunities to win...reality is TU probably should have won the game by about 20 and after the first 10 minutes, TU dominated the game on both sides of the ball. TU will be fine, it just needs to learn to play in games against the big boys...they were the more talented team on Saturday.

Didn't see or hear the TU game but I can just imagine what happened. Spitting the bit seems an expressive and accurate description of events. As for OU playing Boise again...god forbid. We'd have everything to lose and nothing to gain...much like the last time we played them.

To OU faithful: pray that Venables goes to Auburn...

This just in: The Picker is off the TU bandwagon...again.

It had a flat.

didn't know they had a bandwagon. heard they were thinking of getting one
PICK ME (4 years ago)
Oh Picker, PLEASE please please explain to me your logic that somehow USC is getting 'cheated'. I haven't had a good laugh all day, and would like to enjoy one at your expense.

Picker, Pick Me has a point. If Picker Piper can post a peck of clever answers to Pick Me's query, it might be informative

USC is no more cheated than Florida. Florida has done the same as USC except against better opponents. Both teams lost to sub-par teams. Florida did it at home. USC did it on the road. Florida has beaten the crap out of two legitimate top-25 teams since then. I don't know if any of them are getting screwed, but OU is definitely put in the mix with those teams inappropriately. I think there is no way Tech gets out of these next two games without a loss. It's entirely possible that they could lose twice. I also doubt Alabama is going to get past LSU at LSU this weekend. I don't think LSU is phenomenal, but 'Bama hasn't played very well since the Georgia win, at least not well enough to beat LSU on the road. That puts Texas back into the title game against Penn State (assuming nobody else jumps in the mix with great performances). That's still a joke of a national title game. Unless, Tech goes undefeated it should be Florida against Texas for the national title.

Did anyone else not see this coming? Even if Arkansas is down this year, SEC athletes are a big step up from Conference USA athletes. As far as the playcalling goes, it wouldn't have been an issue if they hadn't dug a 17-0 hole at the beginning of the game. They were fortunate to come back because after they fell behind 17-0 I thought they were going to get blown out. I bet some TU fans would rather they had scheduled a cupcake at home instead of an SEC team on the road. At least they would still be ranked. They would have had a better chance of making a BCS bowl going undefeated against cupcakes as opposed to trying to beat an SEC team on the road. Unfortunately, that's how the polls shake out.

Tulsa didnt really mind that they got beat by arkansas at least they got a nice 850,ooo dollar payout now maybe can add more seats to chatman stadium that they wont be able to sell.

Pick Me and Arthur: Glad to explain.

There is scientific proof USC is getting cheated.

Here it is: Call Vegas.

Were USC to play Penn State, USC would be favored 10 to 14.

Were USC to play Texas, USC would be favored 6.

Matter of fact, USC would probably be favored over everybody, which proves as much as anything that it is the best team.

Otherwise, with the current BCS joke system, it's all guesswork. When teams play nobody pre-season, you have to guess if a conference is any good. Who says Texas is good? There is no proof outside the conference. Same with Penn State. You have to figure the SEC IS good. The rest, pure guesswork; and ask Vegas.

Here is what one TU homer posted on an earlier blog. His name was RR.

"TU would absolutely roll Oklahoma State's defense...sure OSU would score a lot as well, but David Johnson would wear out the OSU to the tune of about 400 yards passing in addition to about 300 yards TU would rush for. You people just don't get it...THAT OFFENSE IS LEGIT STUFF and is the best offense in America on any level of college football, BCS, SBC, AT&T, SEC, FBS whatever you want, it's simply the best offense on the college level in 2008...deal with it and get crushed if you have the cohones to play them."

Where is he now?
World Picker (4 years ago)
Oklahoma State would defeat Tulsa 59-27.

TU fans are evidently in hiding.

Next up on the Big Time Agenda: OU at basketball.

The picker has it right. The loss to Arkansas should fall on the coaches. Tulsa is clearly the better team(although not by as much as some of our fans thought), and when you lose to a team that you're better than because you didn't come out ready to play it's the coaches fault. Not to mention some of the dumb play calls.

I also think the soft schedule hurt them against Arkansas. For the first quarter of the game Tulsa seemed shocked to be playing someone as athletic as they are.

It's all completely academic and it shouldn't be. The bowl committees and college presidents are propping up the single piece of tradition I would love to see fall by the wayside: the current bowl system. Until we implement a playoff, there'll always be a great wailing and gnashing of teeth. Some say that's part of the system's charm...to that I offer a heavy dollop of 'bullsh*t'.

WE NEED A PLAYOFF.

Big Ten 10
Talk about boring.
Gene (4 years ago)
A play-off system will do nothing to stop the "wailing and gnashing of teeth." Fans will always argue that they should have been selected or, if selected, that they were the victims of a bad call. Even the selection and seeding will lead to revolt. Please, just leave well enough alone.......
World Picker (4 years ago)
Gene:
You're kidding, right?
Leave bad enough alone?
What if college basketball or the NBA or the NFL or EVERYTHING ELSE had no playoff?
The current system is not even a sytem.
It is guesswork.
It is not even real enough to be considered mythical.
Beyond age-old rivalries, and some freaky bowl match-ups, which could survive a small playoff system, and beyond investment opportunities, college football is a joke.

cyco myko (4 years ago)
True the BCS system is a bit of a joke. Especially since they've tweaked the system several times since it's inception. But the biggest laught is that they had claimed that they didn't want to leave out the major bowls, so they decided to rotate the championship to the Orange, Fiesta, Rose and Sugar. Then what do they do? They leave all of them out and add the BCS Championship!
Where's the logic in this?
Lord Suckpoop (4 years ago)
Gene...that's specious. It's much easier for the number three undefeated team to whine if they're excluded from the single game deciding a champ. If we had a sixteen or even an eight team roundabout, the number nine or number seventeen team wouldn't have quite the same credibility with their argument.
Eric (4 years ago)
How great would a playoff be!!!!???? Just think about how exciting March madness is but this would be college football which draws SO much more fan base and $$$$$$. I mean you can say that its about the bowl games but other teams can still go to bowls. Just like college basketball teams dont ALL get to go to the NCAA tourny. SOme go to the NIT and some would still go to bowls which would make money for their schools. This would also encourage teams from weaker conferences like the Big 10 and Pac 10 to schedule tougher teams vs just trying to be undefeated. Think how great it would be to have a playoff with teams like Tech, Bama, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, USC Penn State. Sure some team will have a compplaint but its better than 4 or 5 feeling like they could win it by the end of the year. Gosh i cant wait for that day!!!!!!
MIKE (4 years ago)
Picker, what in the world has Colin Cowherd been brainswashing you with? USC is a joke! If Vegas did have them favored against anybody in a national championship game it would be because they are media darlings. The PAC 10 is awful!

Put USC against any of the top 3 in either the Big 12 or SEC and they would get beat. Here is why: Sanchez is over-hyped and overrated. He threw 3 picks in the game against a bad Arizona State team. If he throws 3 picks to OU, Texas, OSU, or T-tech, the game is over.

Vegas...my gosh, what an uninspiring argument.
Cedric the Emasculator (4 years ago)
Mike, it has nothing to do with USC being the media darlings. 'Vegas' is where the experts...the true experts whose positions, reps, and income...depend upon their prognostications, dwell. These people set the lines and must not only know heights, weights, speeds, health,of the players, but weather and any other intangibles that may affect the games outcome. Are they perfect? Of course not; but you can take a lot of the guesswork out of wagering by acquiring a lot of knowledge. I'm certainly no USC fan - far from it - but they have, top to bottom, more five-star blue chips than any other team in the country with the possible exception of Texas.

But if it makes you feel any better, I suspect you're right about Sanchez.
cyco myko (4 years ago)
Understand this about USC, they dominate in big games. They've had little problem beating the big boys in other conferences. It's their insistence on overlooking the underdogs that gets them year after year. See: UCLA, Stanford, Oregon State over the last three seasons. Against the top ten they might not win, but they would play very well.
