TU Disappoints Great Home Crowd, Nation
Published: 11/25/2011 4:52 PM

TU crowds have become notorious for their casualness.

The first ten rows at the basketball games are apt to snooze.

At football games against lousy foes, a Frisbee thrown in the stands might not hit anybody.

But for this one, the Houston game, it was a real college football crowd, a packed house ready to get rowdy.

And TU opened up a can of rotten eggs on the crowd.

The defense was fine. The offensive coaching was not. TU thought too much and decided to become a running team, frequently plowing into wads of humanity from a tightly-bunched "I" formation. And the Houston quarterback outplayed the TU quarterback by at least a mile.

The facts are this. TU has played four good teams and was obliterated by all of them.

The problem was obvious. Tulsa has no credible downfield threat. The long passes of yesteryear are not possible. Houston played a short field, which made their LBs and DBs look a lot better than they really are. The difference in speed between the two teams was glaring.

Picker is correct. Unimaginative offensive play-calling, no vertical passing game. Bill Blankenship has done a very credible job this year, but before we anoint him, let's remember of TU's 8 wins, only one (SMU) came against a team with a winning record, and of the four losses, TU was only competitive for one half (Houston)of those, and obliterated in the others.

Receiver Edwards has all world speed
(great recovery after that Golf cart incident form his leg injury) Sims is a playmaker too

Their flying linebackers kept Tulsa @ bay
McGraw is a stud & will be playing on Sundays
Brown & Stewart were in a lot of tackles too

Kinne never got “comfortable”, he went back to happy feet & hurried & hesitated alot in the pocket
Very few throws hit the pads of the players & missed some open recievers.

W/ this yr’s schedule & the difficulty surrounding many external issues that effected team chemistry,
x-player deaths & 1st yr. coach & Staff
new offensive & defensive schemes,
fastest player on team gone days before 1st game
1-3 @ one point in the season

8-4 was better than what many expected. I have a feeling BB is building a solid foundation to give TU that opportunity to reach the next level

Hope many of those "fans" who showed up at the game will support TU in its bowl quest

I too think BB was a good choice. He must do some great recruiting, though, for TU to have as good a season next year. In particular, we need some speedy play makers. Though I am also beginning to think that the Offensive Coordinator position could be our most important upgrade. The play calling seemed very conservative and unimaginative against Houston, and somewhat throughout the season. A lot of that is dictated by personnel, of course, but boy are we a loooong way from the Malzahn and Morris days...

There was a time when TU simply recruited the best athletes they could get. Now they can recruit to need. TU needs a downfield receiving threat like Brendon Marion was and like Damaris Johnson can be. (I hope he returns next year)They need more speed in their secondary especially at the corners.

They also need more Tulsans to recognize that Tulsa offers excellent football at affordable family prices. If you make them your team and care about the outcome of their games, you don't have to sit around like a couch potato or drive out of town (and pay twice the price) to have a great college football experience. It is right here in town on 11th street.

Sounds as if they didn't have as good
a team as Houston.
Now, how do you fix that?

Any gracious benefactors out there willing to throw millions TU's way?
Thought not. Well, that's it then.
We get the rare star and enjoy.

TU CANNOT play it straight against a good team, cannot run, run, run.

It has to fling it non-stop.

Period.

Trying to run so much against an average Houston defense was ill-advised.

I hate to agree with the Pickster but, alas, I must. He is correct. While TU doesn't have the speed needed to just run by good defenders, some less conservative play calling would certainly have improved our chances. GJ can fling it. Why not let him?

JPJ, exactly, expert opinion such as yours is what makes this site such a good place to be.

Great point, Picker. The teams that have given Houston the most trouble (La. Tech and UTEP) have done so by throwing the football.

Im glad were complaining on certain aspects; of a game that was played, wasnt too long ago, we just plain sucked, thier was nothing good to see, it was all bad! We've come a long way, was disapointed with outcome of the Houston game, but our guys won the ones they were supposed to, 10-3 last year, 8-4 this year so far, recruits will come, and were gonna be alright. Go Canes!
