TU Fans are Fine, Team Isn't
Published:

Tulsa is asking fans how to make the basketball atmosphere better.
TU even sent out a note to fans before Wednesday night's loss at home to lowly Tulane telling them how to be better fans. Come early and get rowdy.
But TU does not have a problem with its fans. Or cheerleaders or pep band.
It is the team. If you win, the fans will be loud and proud. The band will be fine. So will the cheerleaders.
TU basketball was plenty fun, for players and fans, before the last five years.
It is no coincidence that this dip in TU basketball interest comes at a time when the team is continuing to struggle.
You can talk about the fans and cheerleaders and band all you want.
Winning fixes everything. So, if TU wants to know what is wrong with TU"s fans there is a simple answer. Win games.
It is the same everywhere. When you win, whether you are the Reynolds Center or Gallagher-Iba, the atmosphere will be great.
When you don't, there are empty seats and no atmosphere.
That may sound too simple but it is the simple truth.
Read the flyer for yourself.

From one John to another, don't try to feed me with that garbage. Klein, you are better than that. Do you expect me to believe that? Do you really believe that? When did we start telling coaches that they owe us something? They don't owe us anything. Fans should go to the game and be loud because they have a passion for that school or program, and they want to support those young kids. Tulsa plays hard and is fun to watch when they aren't playing thugs, such as Tulane. There are plenty of programs around the country in which the fan support doesn't dip much due to losing, and that is because of their tradition. Well, TU has a great tradition, but the fans are spoiled and feel like they are owed something....apparently you do to. In the next year or two, Wojcik will have this program sailing along again, and you and everyone else will be singing his praises. I hope he gives you the finger at that point.

I agree with Mr. Klein's comments. Win games and the crowd will be loud. Look at Gallegher-Iba - this season's lackluster performance has turned that arena into a mortuary this year. John #1 would not be able to identify any program that has had five miserable seasons, but still has rowdy fan support.

"Lowly Tulane?" A Tulane team that beat Tulsa last season. A Tulane team that already had 10 wins (including victories over Auburn, Georgia, LSU, and St. John's this year) is not "lowly." Thanks for playing!

John,
I read the note you had posted in your blog and even though I'm a TU fan I've got to ask: "Who in the heck wrote that?" Two things about the note: (1) What happens when the opposing team scores first -- I guess we politely take our seats and wait for TU to score -- and (2) the real humdinger: chanting "You Can't Score" to the opposing team. I've played my share of basketball and can tell you the only reason my team would not have scored due to a crowd chanting that would be due to our clutching our sides and laughing out loud. Talk about intimidating!!

I think you are wrong John(not Klein but the one with the comment). Wojcik will never have this program sailing along again. He doesn't even know enough to play one of his best players (Glenn Andrews) on a night when he is the only guy consistently hitting his shots! Andrews plays only 18 of 45 minutes! Wojcik has beaten 2 decent teams (ORU & Charlotte) in his two plus seasons. People wonder why nobody will shot. It's because Wojcik will pull them out of the lineup if they miss. His short hook reminds me of another "great" Tulsa coach, J.D. Barnett. Note to Dougie...leave them alone & let them play the game & play your second leading scorer!! He's gonna make mistakes, but how else will he get better?

John,
We have disagreed on our fair share of subjects through the years, but not here! I think you are spot on with this assessment. The good news is, I think TU is getting a lot better on the court...too bad they lost the last two games in 3 OT and OT. There's no doubt that the TU marketing department has not exactly set the world on fire with its promotion of TU basketball, but there hasn't been much to promote since Buzz Peterson's successor crashed the program in a way no other coach in the history of college basketball has ever destroyed a program...that being said, the fact remains that you are correct. When TU basketball was on fire, the atmosphere was terrific, particularly after the opening of the Reynolds Center. The thing Doug needs to concentrate on is bringing in better opponents. Even if you lose to these teams, your team becomes better for the experience of playing high calibur talent. The Dallas Cowboys marketing team couldn't create a rocous atmosphere playing Mississippi Valley State, North Texas and Central Arkansas on a nightly basis. The competiition has to be stepped up a notch...no, make that 5 notches and TU needs a big win along the way...make that happen and the atmosphere will take care of itself.

I disagree somewhat with this article. I understand winning is your best bet to get casual fans and fair weather fans to show up. But this is ridiculous. I love Tulsa, I have lived here for more than 30 years but I cannot put a positive spin on the fact that TULSA IS LAME. The apathy & lack of support at TU goes hand-in-hand with the apathy & lack of support for the Tulsa Oilers, the Tulsa 66ers and the AF2 Champions, Tulsa Talons. I cannot even call Tulsa a "fair weather sports town" when the Talons, who are the winninest team in AF2 history and who have the most AF2 Championships in history, cannot even fill the teeny-tiny Convention Center! C'MON TULSA SPORTS FANS, GET OFF YOUR REAR-ENDS AND CHEER ON YOUR TEAMS!

JIM, I agree. Also, Steve and Tom, along with their garbage opinions, are wrong. I think they need the finger too. There are many programs that have gone through lean years, but have kept most of their fan base....again, due to their tradition and the fact that their fans are supporting the kids on the floor. They don't feel that their coach owes them something. Further, Tom obviously knows nothing about Wojcik. If you pay attention, you'll see that no quick hook exists. TU was 2-of-19 to start against Tulane. He wasn't pulling everybody out every second when they were missing all those shots. And the comparison to Barnett is laughable. Gosh guys, mabye TU should hired you Steve and Tom, since you know all about it.

Gee John, I thought it was ok to have a differing opinion here. I don't think because I disagree with you that I should get the finger. I promise not to flip you off because we disagree! How long have you been following TU basketball? I've been there for 38 years. I simply don't care for the direction the program is going. The talent is there. Somebody (Wojcik or assistants) seem to be recruiting ok. Game/player management frustrate me. Is that ok with you John?

I think the part of problem with the TU basketball program lies with the coach. Basketball is a sport that with two good players you can turn a program around with. He has not really done that. I know if I was a player I would not want to play for him. He seem like an A hole on and of the court. I think Rotni Clark might have come to TU if Wojcik was not the coach. To get Tulsa fans to spend their hard earned money it must be an up tempo game and against quality non conference opponents, can't do nothing about the conference teams. People like action.

Oklahomans, in general, are bandwagon fans!!!! You will always have your core fans and the rest need a reason to show up. This team has improved over last year but they don't have that BIG WIN that gets people excited and their not consistantly winning, so people won't follow them. Sorry coach but when you call down the thunder, you better win or there are going to be critics at your door.
Coach and staff have recruited pretty well but we've had 2 of those main recruits leave in the last year and that hurts. OU has 2 of there main players out right now and look what's it's done to them!!! Coach Wojcik and his team deserve more time, lets see how things go during this conference run and then we can judge. GO TU!!!

I agree with John Klein. You can't MAKE people "support" a team. Fan enthusiasm comes naturally if you have a team that not only wins, but plays an exciting game, has a couple of stand-out players that the fans can get to know and love, and a coach with a good personality who doesn't go around blaming and chastising the fans.

Lowly Tulane? Are you kidding? Short term memory? What seed was Tulsa at the C-USA basketball tournament last year? #5. What seed was Tulane? #4. Who won when the teams met in the C-USA Quarterfinals? TULANE DID.
Tulane is 11-6 this year with wins over Georgia, Auburn and LSU.
Lowly Tulane? Do some research.

I live in Oklahoma City and frequently read the Tulsa World to get a different perspective than what our daily paper presents. While looking for accounts of Wednesday night’s Tulane-Tulsa basketball game, I happened across this article, which juxtaposed “lowly” and “Tulane.” I take offense at that. Tulane’s record in men’s basketball stands at 12-6, including victories over three SEC teams and one from the Big East. Losses include perennial power Syracuse (in New York) and the team with the highest RPI at the time, St. Mary’s (on a neutral court). Of course, neither is on a par with Arkansas-Little Rock or Oral Roberts, but, then again, neither is too shabby. Before you cast aspersions next time, please check your facts.

Hey SETH and MARTINOKC I'm sure Tulane fans are happy with their current record. Maybe the reason Klein said lowly Tulane is that the past 10 years how many NCAA Tourney bids have they got compared to Tulsa? How many Conference Titles have they won compared to TU? Have they won the NIT, 2001, let alone been in it like Tulsa. You can now see why he said lowly when comparing the two schools. Sure the Green Wave is having some good fortune now but when you compare them to better schools its like a flash in the pan. Would you be offended if a writer at Duke or Kansas said that of your beloved Green Wave? Oh that's right because those schools are better than Tulane 9 times out of 10. Check the history and while the TU men havent been that great, our last tourney bid was 2003, I believe if you compare the two schools you will see why he called Tulane lowly. Kind of like Tulane football!

Oh and TOM since you have been here for 38 yrs and you are sooo supportive of this coach while you mock someone like J.D Barnett..."His short hook reminds me of another "great" Tulsa coach, J.D. Barnett"...keep in mind mr TU basketball historian Coach Barnett did take the Golden Hurricane to 2 NCAA tourneys within 5 years. How many has coach Wojik taken TU to? I'm surprised we beat SMU tonight!
Seth

SCTROJAN-
I could care less what Tulsa did in the late 90's or early part of this decade. Did you know that Tulane went to the NIT Final 4 in the mid 90's and went to 2 NCAA tourneys in the 90's?
My point? That's as relevant as Tulsa's "HISTORY". There was no mention of Tulane 's record since 2001. It says lowly Tulane, which implies this year, this team. He's not talking about Tulane in 2003 or 2001. This year. This week to be exact. And this year Tulane beat Tulsa. Last year Tulane was better than Tulsa. Deal with it. It was a dumb comment.
And lastly, TU is Tulane not Tulsa.
SCTrojan
LOL "And lastly, TU is Tulane not Tulsa"...Hmmm i dont know how much longer that lowly University will be there due to massive Hurricanes almost leveling the worthless town it is in. By the way its great to be in the NIT 2 times but have you ever won it? Tulsa has won 2 of them and has an Elite 8 with numerous Sweet 16's to its credit. And Tulane? Hmmm well we just made it to the NCAA's a few times and we are happy with that! I know you are all about current history and I will give you the fact that the Green Sewage...I mean Green Wave have won a few. Yet overall i bet the little resurgance will be shortlive and Tulsa will be back to its winning ways. History in the past 20 years would support that what would it say for Tulane? Also I love watching Tulane football, yes you had a great rusher but he got tired of getting beaten down without a bowl so he headed to the NFL! I look forward to watching your boys get beat down by us in football again whch is now 2 years in a row! Hey how many bowls for you guys? I can think of one in the past 10 years. Anyway enjoy your little success and i look forward to the box scores to see how many games short of the NCAA you will be.

Hey SCTrojan are you a USC fan? Do you live in Tulsa? Well if you do your school has almost 100 titles why do you care about an inbred univeristy that hasnt won anything nationally let alone on a conference level!! Tulsa will be good again soon but for Tulane well they will always be a homecoming team in football and a team in basketball that misses the big dance then barely misses out the NIT!! Oh and sure you beat some teams this year but you also lost to Buffalo, New Orleans, and got by Alabama St! Wow that is an impressive NCAA resume!
SCTrojan
Hey Switzer yes Im a USC fan and was born in Los Angeles but we moved here when i was in high school and i like the Tulsa World. I think Klein is a great writer and love it when fans from a subapar, athletically, university talk trash. Yes my Trojans have won numerous titles but in this matter i think TUlsa has the better program. I do like how you say that Tulane is just a homecoming school for football teams! That is true and i looked at their schedule and they got blown out by Southern Miss who is just at .500 themselves! Oh well lets see how this all pans out in March!

TO SETH:
Don't even try to compare Tulane basketball to Tulsa. Tulane went to the NIT Final 4 in the mid 90's and went to 2 NCAA tourneys in the 90's. You are really trying to use that. HILARIOUS!
Tulsa was two points away from the NCAA Final Four in 2000, and they've won two NIT Championships. From 1982 to 2003, Tulsa averaged 20 wins per seasaon and made the post-season 18 times, including two Sweet Sixteens and an Elite Eight.
Tulane doesn't even compare. That program is crap.
