TU Needs Manners
Published: 12/27/2010 2:02 PM
Last Modified: 12/27/2010 3:50 PM

Leading 55-35 with a minute to go in the Hawaii Bowl, and with announcer Ron Franklin stating the obvious, that the team up 20 would end the game in a classy and respectful and manly way, the Tulsa quarterback rolled out and passed into the end zone for a cheap and chicken touchdown to sour a good win.

Rather than accept congratulations, the TU head coach was in the embarrassing situation of having to apologize to the Hawaii coach at game's end.

Thank heavens hardly anybody was watching at this point.

The TU coach said a run had been called, throwing a player under the sportsmanship trophy. Running a simple play up 20 with a minute to go is pretty cheesy. If a team can't stop a basic play, it deserves to lose by a lot. But faking and passing feels underhanded and bullying. And some thought some TU people behaved inappropriately after a win at Notre Dame.

People stay too long and misbehave at holiday parties all the time.

Who knows what will come of the rudeness. Maybe the 62nd point will get TU a top 25 vote. It's obviously time for a pre-season training film on manners at TU. If you want to take advantage of a similar situation in the future, at least have the common courtesy to run a double reverse up 20 with a minute left, and not throw.

....what?
But What Do I Know? (2 years ago)
We did the same thing a couple of years ago to Central Arkansas. It's embarrassing. I remember what it was like when Houston did the same thing to us 100-6 many years back. Bill Yeoman was a class act?

Mr. Picker, perhaps we can borrow from the Little Leagues and have a Twenty-Point Rule. If one team is up twenty with five minutes left, they go home the winners. Suely the ego of student-athletes is fragile and we wouldn't want to upset them. You were kidding . . . right?

Toss Howard Twilley and Jerry Rhome out the window and Tulsa has no tradition; this isn't a slam on them (I'm a native Tulsan), it's just an honest observation. Being in the same state as the Sooners and to a far, far, lesser degree--to Oklahoma State--they simply don't have much of a fan base. In fact, the Tulsa Roughnecks used to fill the stadium to capacity in the early eighties when the Golden Hurricane could not. So, when you take a starving man to a bounteous buffet, you should not expect decorum; he is going to stuff himself, stuff his pockets, and be very sloppy doing it; same thing has happened to TU this year. Give 'em a little success (10-3, a win in South Bend, and the bowl game victory), you shouldn't expect them to behave like they've "been there before", because they haven't.

Kidding? Not remotely. You're a better sport than that, Gene, or used to be. I still haven't gotten the dinners you owe me. Throwing in the end zone with a minute left and leading by 20 is nonsense. You don't remember what sportsmanship is? Who doesn't like bad manners? At least one person who pays for a ticket to TU games, that's who.

I feel it's almost sportswriting malpractice not to mention what Kinne had to say about the pass after the game: "Maybe they shouldn't have booed our highlight film at the banquet." TU was also booed taking the field, forgive me if I don't care.

In other news... Auburn vs Oregon: Is the spread still dead there, Pick?
The Picker (2 years ago)
Then here's hoping somebody on-sides next year leading TU 80-10.

If it was nothing, why did the TU coach apologize?

If class and sportsmanship mean nothing, put it on the season ticket form next year. If TU doesn't want the support of people who do believe in a right and wrong way to do things, fine.

Somebody booed the highlight film? On national TV?

Oregon-Auburn, it looks like another TU-Hawaii shootout. I'm starting to tilt slightly toward the dog.

Hawaii booed Tulsa's highlight film at the bowl banquet. Hawaii showed no class off the field so TU decided not to quit playing football prematurely.

What if TU were to run it? It would be forth down with more time. Should TU have kicked a field goal then?

The only people who were really upset about that last score are Hawaii players and coaches and anyone trying to find any only negative about one of the greatest bowl victories for the Tulsa football program which capped off one of the best years.

Also, twenty points is not much of a margin when you have two of the highest scoring teams in the nation.

sax5084 is right. Why do you loathe Tulsa so much Picker? Is it because they have proved you wrong yet again?

Tulsa World, why do you pay someone to write such malicious passive aggresive hate mail about Tulsa? Most everything written about TU on this blog is negative. Instead of saying a single thing about how great TU did this year, he spreads hate for a program which needs more support and more recognition.

I didn't see it as that big of a deal. It wasn't like it was 55-3. Congrats to TU, I honestly thought it would be a better game than that.

I don't like poor sportsmanship. Doesn't matter what the age of the players.

Hawaii was wrong for booing. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Whoops sorry about the double post.

Normally, Pick, I would agree with you. However, the boorish behavior of the “Rainbow Warriors” merited nothing less than a good old fashion whoopin'. Booing our team at the bowl banquet and using of only six of the allotted fifteen practice sessions to prepare against the Hurricane showed outright contempt for the Tulsa program. Actually, by running up the score a bit, we did these clowns a favor. They will not soon again think their lousy team should be playing in a bigger bowl against the big boys. The whole WAC is delusional... but no more so, I guess, than those responsible for putting OU, OSU and Boise on TU’s non-conference schedule!

TtownTimmy (2 years ago)
The play didn't surprise me one bit. TU's coach acts like a high school...or maybe middle school...coach. It was a classless act and I'm sorry for the few thousand people around the country who were watching the game.
eglkeeper (2 years ago)
The game was played well on the field, let'er go The Pecker...
whereintheworld (2 years ago)
TtownTimmy, what is wrong? Did you not get a job because a TU grad took it? Did you get passed up for a promotion because a TU grad was better suited?

Todd Graham did not call a pass. Are you unable to read the SECOND PARAGRAPH:
"Rather than accept congratulations, the TU head coach was in the embarrassing situation of having to apologize to the Hawaii coach at game's end."

You probably didn't watch the game and just posted on here because you are bitter at TU.

Maybe you finally realized that your OSU tickets are worth more than the degree... and that translates into a lifetime of crippling debt for you and your fellows as you struggle to put down the bottle and illicit drugs.
Tulsan in Exile (2 years ago)
Look, Todd Graham is just a football coach, and far from the most obnoxious and boorish. Of course he acts like a high schooler, as do
most coaches and players when they are on the field. Football is a game, not reality. I don't tell my kids to learn life's lessons and develop a philosophy of living by watching football. This whole thread is much ado about nothing. TU is no more guilty of running up the score than any other college football program. The other two programs in the state do much more of that than TU. In most games, if TU doesn't score 50, they don't win. So everybody should just relax.

BOO HOO did we hurt Hawaii's feelings ? Lets turn the cheek...what would Jesus do ? SNIFF...SNIFF. Its OK for Hawaii players to boo TU's banquet highlight film, then call TU a bunch of nobodies, do their warrior HUKA stomp dance on the field before the game. If you believe Hawaii wouldn't have run up the score on TU if given the chance ur nuts. I'd bet my hula skirt on it. I wish we could have beat them by 50 points. The rest of you whinners need to take your antibiotics and wash it down with ur perrier bottled water...the world is just too cruel.

Just My Random Thoughts (2 years ago)
Congrats TU on a great victory!
I don't see what the problem is with the score. If this were a 80-3 victory then maybe I could say that TU should have taken it easy, but it was not.
They were winning and make to have a solid showing. Deal with it
bmf (2 years ago)
I agree the picker needs to be picking on someone else, he does normally speak negative about TU. let it go, The sun still comes up the next day, So what... I think they deserved it.

OSU is playing a pathetic unranked team is 7-5. They have zero power if they cannot workout a better match-up or even protest that lowly of a match-up after their dream season.

Tulsa has the best bowl game opponent of any team in Oklahoma this year. TU is the only Oklahoma team to beat a ranked team this bowl season.
TU and OU are the only two FBS college football teams in Oklahoma which have beaten ranked opponents in bowl games in the last 20 years. Tulsa has beaten two straight ranked teams (2009: Ball State 12-1 & 2010: Hawaii 10-3).
whereintheworld (2 years ago)
Tulsan in Exile,
TU only allowed more than 28 points 4 times this season and those 4 were all top-15 offenses (OSU #1, Hawaii #8, Southern Miss #15 & ECU #12).

OSU has already allowed more than 28 points 4 times in 12 games.

The ND thing is so overblown. ND gave no instructions to the TU band for post game playing because they thought they were guaranteed the win. They thought the band and team would just shake hands with the winning Iriish and go board the buses. They did give instructions on pregrame and halftime playing to the TU band, however. ND assumed they would win, and you know what happens when you ASSUME!
