TU football players march in today’s MLK parade

While in Memphis, Tenn., last month, preparing to meet – and defeat – Iowa State in the Liberty, members of the University of Tulsa football team spent a rainy afternoon at the National Civil Rights Museum.

Today, those same Golden Hurricane players will march in the Martin Luther King Jr. parade, set for 11 a.m.

In a university press release, TU coach Bill Blankenship was quoted as saying, “The members of this team – players and coaches alike – are proud that Tulsa celebrates the legacy of Dr. King and the many civil rights leaders who have given so much to our city and our country.

“Many of our young men received a better understanding of Dr. King’s life and legacy after visiting the Civil Rights Museum. . . . We appreciate the opportunity to participate in the parade and to honor MLK Day alongside so many others in our community.”

The Tulsa parade marshal is Regina Tisdale, the wife of the late basketball great Wayman Tisdale.

The parade begins at the intersection of East John Hope Franklin Boulevard and North Detroit Avenue, heading east on John Hope Franklin and turning south on Greenwood Avenue. At ONEOK Field, the parade turns west on Archer Street.

Hurricane players and cheerleaders will distribute footballs to children along the parade route.
