Take the OU Hoop Job: Please
Published: 3/30/2011 3:07 PM

Could there be a tougher big-time sell than the OU hoop job?

The OKC Thunder is good and figures to stay that way. Tickets aren't cheap.

The NCAA is taking notes.

The OU team is lousy.

It plays second-chair fiddle at a football power.

Maybe some nice juco guy.

About the two games this weekend: They couldn't be much better or evenly matched, mirror-images, don't you think.

Kentucky is favored two over Uconn, Butler about the same over VCU.

We'll try both favorites.

Collge vs. the NBA: You forgot to mention that the NBA is just alot better basketball with more talented players.

College vs. the NBA: You also forgot to mention that 35 second shot clock is a friggin' bore. I am tired of watching Wojick and Princeton dribble the air out of the basketball. They need to go to down to at least 28 seconds or meet the NBA at 24.

OU in general: You also neglected to mention that Lloyd Noble is the 5th best college level facility (BOK and OKC arena being pro) in the state behind OSU, TU, ORU and the UMAC.

OU in general: You also need to knock it down a notch. The dude is going to be 3rd fiddle for a while to the hot women's coach.

I've been cheering for Butler all the way so far, so why should I stop now???

BUTLER! !

OU has to be on plan E by now. They are stuck between a rock and hard place. With possible NCAA infractions looming and a very small budget to work with due to Capel's buyout, OU may be scraping the bottom of the barrel before long.

I agree about Butler beating VCU but I've got UConn over Kentucky.

Small Budget Mexidude? Seriously bro, you can't be serious.

Terry Evans would do a fine job, actually cares about OU and doesnt need a map to the arena (see: Jeff capel) and would take whatever they offered within reason. He has won everywhere he has coached. Why not? JOe C would never do it. He also would have never hired Sherri Coale form Norman HS and thats worked out pretty decent...

What's funny, of course, is that Plan E has just as much chance at success as Plan A would. There's really no telling what you're going to get these days. Heck, Shaka Smart is in the Final Four in his second year at a small program. They say Joe Castiglione is to the point of throwing darts. That's probably for the best anyway.

Unless I'm missing something, OU is still on plan 'A', and very carefully so. Remember Nebraska's problem after Solich was given the old heave-ho? First they went to Nutt, who turned them down flat, next they went to another guy (name eludes me and I'm too lazy to dig through archives just to support my point), and finally got to the bottom of the barrel with Callahan. And they did it all publicly, much to the humiliation of the program. Missouri is following the same path today with their BB program. They just failed in a very public attempt to lure Mike Painter from Purdue to Columbia. Now, all other candidates (and the popcorn-eating schadenfreude-loving world) is publicly viewing the circus that has become the Mizzou hiring process. They'll be lucky if they don't end up with some retired division II football coach on the hardwood. At least Oklahoma isn't laying it out there for the world to see. The first rule of any trial lawyer is to never ask anyone on the witness stand a question the answer of which he doesn't already know. Castiglione must make sure that his ducks are in a row and when he does publicly make an offer, he already knows the answer. Question is, with the myriad of problems OU faces, who CAN he get. But the point is, the U of O is still intelligent enough to be working on plan A.

SN, I turned 'em down this morning.

Did the pick really just say the OKC Thunder are good??? Wow, I guess it took goin 14-2 in March for the Pick to throw em a bone. Only the best winning % in the history of the franchise for 1 month...

SBH, um, have you been reading much on this? The 2 million dollar buyout for Capel is a sizeable roadblock in OU's coach search.

Wgspost, do you not believe Buzz Williams was the first choice? Then Lon Kruger? Then Bruce Weber? Just because they didn't interview doesn't mean OU didn't want them.

I do agree that they have handled it much better than Mizzou has. But hey, they're Mizzou. Would you have expected them to handle anything with humility and class?
wgspost (last year)
MexiMelt...it doesn't make any difference whether OU "wanted" Williams or Lon Kruger or Freddy Kruger...the fact is that they didn't hang themselves out there with an offer that was publicly rejected. I might want to play college football but I'm not going to put my 20 extra pounds in a pair of sweats and go out and make a public *ss out of myself trying. I heard lots of fans talking Williams and Kruger up, I saw a handful of sports "pundits" talking them up, but I never heard anything of a firm offer being extended, did you? Why? Because the AD has enough brains to do his leg work behind closed doors before humiliating the university by extending a hand and having it slapped back in his face. Big, big difference. Next?
MexiMike (last year)
Actually, yes, I did hear about OU offering Lon Kruger. Twice actually. And he turned them down both times.

As it turns out, third time's a charm. Congrats, you have a new $2.2 million/year coach that is close to 60 years old. Yikes.

Like I said, Pick.

Butler over VCU and UConn over Kentucky.

But then again, you know what they say about a blind squirrel. Haha!
The Picker (last year)
Let's go with Butler plus the three and a half over Uconn.
