Tale of Two Rams

Owasso native Paul Smith became the first Tulsa quarterback to score touchdowns in three bowl games, but here's some breaking news: TU had two good football players from Owasso this season.
Tight end Charlie Ramsey, light on stats and heavy on contributions, was the other. Offensive coordinator Charlie Stubbs identified Ramsey as the player who was TU's unsung offensive hero.
"Charlie is the guy that does the dirty work," Stubbs said. "He doesn’t catch many balls at all, but he is a guy that is asked to do so many movements and so many adjustments in a game and play so many different positions as a tight end can play.
"He is very smart. He can make the adjustments in a game and, a lot of times when we had some key plays in the running game in particular, he had an integral part in helping us spring that play. So he is one that nobody would mention, but he is a guy that we think is very valuable to our offense."
Ramsey converted from offensive lineman to tight end. Smith said Ramsey's adjustment has been impressive to watch.
"It was rough on him at first, going out there and trying to catch balls, but it's fun now to look back on our times at Owasso," the quarterback said. "He was one of my first friends on the football team. He was always willing to stay an extra 10 minutes and talk to me. That's something that I enjoy the most about him, his personality and his friendship."
The tag-team partners, the one that makes all the headlines and the one whose name rarely makes it into print, will have one final season together next year.

I think that it is great that Tu has two fine player from Owasso, but it is a shame that Ramsey does not catch more passes in the game, because of a stultifying, conservative, predictable offensive game plan of offensive coordinator Stubbs. TU's losses this season can be directly attributable to the lack of offensive imagination. TU has too many weapons on offense, but failed to utilize them effectively game after game.
It is also shameful the way the Stubbs and Kraigthorpe failed to distribute the ball to its seniors during their final games. It appears that the effort was to actually deny them an opportunity to shine. What was the reasoning behind the three yard and a cloud of dust play calling during the Armed Forces Bowl? The entire coaching staff should apologize to the entire team, especially the seniors playing their last college game, and possible the last games of their careers, for not opening up the offense and letting the kids have fun. That is what bowl games are all about. As irrational as this may sound, I believe that the need to the attention given to certain players on the field as opposed to others by the TU offensive co-ordinatorf is blatently obvious. This cut off the nose to spite the face attitude was not only reflected in the dismal showing of the team during the Armed Forces Bowl, but was evident througout the season. In my opinion if it continues the recently resurgent TU football program is due for a meltdown.
