In case you might not have noticed, most sports are being played by a bunch of spoiled brats and bad actors.

Intense effort is oftentimes directly related to money or personal glory.

The overall image projected by athletes is one of selfishness.

The most recent example of the softening of America could involve the state of the football coach and program at Kansas, could, because all is alleged and rumored so far.

According to reports, some KU football players had their feelings hurt by the coach.

Sad feelings, bruised egos, tender mercies -- this explains how the KU basketball team was able beat the daylights out of the football team in a pre-season rumble.

A week ago I'd of agreed with your take, but some of the things coming out of this situation forces me to disagree.

Yelling, cursing, criticizing play, chest poking, jersey/face mask grabbing, etc. is just part of football.

Using confidential information about someones father being an alcoholic, brother being shot,  player coming from an impoverished situation, etc. to degrade and humiliate them in front of the team in the name of "motivation" is way different.

One of those players should have "motivated" Mangino to lose weight by knocking his teeth out of his mouth.

A morbidly obese bully who is uses confidential info to humiliate his players, who is banned from his kids high school games for harassing the refs, who goes ballistic over a parking ticket, and who weighs 450 on a good day doesn't belong in a position of authority at a university, even one as lame as Kansas.

Suggested press release from Kansas AD:

"We have decided to suspend coach Mangino without pay in order to help in deal with his anger/health issues.

Coach Mangino once confided to me that he was very bitter and angry because he has not been able to look down and see his own junk for the past twenty years.

I hope relating this personal and embarrassing confession will help motivate Mark to be a better person and coach."

Best Mangino joke I've seen during this mess:

After a game in KC last year, Mangino got lost going back to Lawrence and pulled into a gas station.

Mangino to Clerk: "Say, can you tell me how to get back to 435?"

Clerk: "You might want to start with a salad or two."

Our sports do have spoiled punks in them. Just look at some of the folks in the NFL and NBA. Most of them went to college at some point. However, I agree with WillyJ on the Mangino situation. The allegations of using confidential stuff against players are serious. We'll have to see what transpires with the allegations. Maybe they are actually legitimate.

If Kansas were 9-0 would its fans really care?

YES! I knew the Picker had a clue... I guess if you dont like how your 5 free years of college is being administered, you can take your cleats and go home... Oh yeah, those like your books, housing, and food are FREE! What a bunch of wusses. KU just looking for a false reason to fire him because he's fat.

There's a limit to the amount, and type, of verbal abuse is acceptable.  Sounds like Mangino may have a problem recognizing where the line is.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
As ridiculous as this situation continues to become, Ignatz is correct.

If KU were winning, would any of these allegations came to light? I doubt it.
The Masked Assassin (3 years ago)
Maybe not, but if the allegations ARE true, it may explain part of the problem with the team going downhill.  How many guys have had the same stuff happen to them but didn't say anything?  Loss of respect for your leader can be infectious.

Willy J: You notice that some of complaints are coming from 2007! That is of course the year KU won the Orange Bowl. When not a single complaint was lodged. These guys just suddenly got hurt? And, along the lines of the two local high school players who demanded the firing of a coach: why go public?

Well you know the answer to that Picker. . it's because they've lost 5 in a row and will likely get rolled by Texas this weekend.

The blood is in the water. .

In a way it's a minor-league version of the Bobby Knight situation- as long as Knight was winning NC's and fielding teams had legit shots at competing for NC's, his boorish behavior was tolerated.

When he started losing 1st round tourney games to like of Richmond and Cleveland St., his protective bubble burst and everyone he'd mistreated over the years came out of the woodwork.

Of course Mangino is no Knight- will Knight tore down players he also built them up again and the majority seem to have genuine affection for him and he seems to have their back. .

Mangino just seems to tear down players, and the fact former players he made team captions are coming out against him tells me there's something wrong going on.
WillyJ (3 years ago)
By the way, where are the ex-Kansas players coming to Mangino's defense?

Haven't heard of one yet. .  that tells me something as well.

By the way Picker, while I disagree with your take here, I always enjoy your writing and the Thursday morning picks are the one must-read for me in the T. World.

Keep up the good work. .

Willy J, excellent thought on why nobody has stood up as a character witness for Mangino.....
you'd think there would be ONE, wouldn't you.....

WHEN it happened is not the issue, only IF.  Should you dog a girl for waiting a year to tell someone she was raped?  Kinda beside the point.
huricandeoro (3 years ago)
Brandon McAnderson, a former Kansas runningback, has come out in support of Mangino. These players need to suck it up. He hurt your feelings?? As another Big 12 coach would say, "Go play intramurals brother."
huricandeoro (3 years ago)
And assassin, how is a girl waiting a year to tell someone she was raped even remotely similar to players waiting two years to cry about some coach telling them they're going to end up like their alcoholic dad or telling them they're not hanging out with their homies anymore?
FIRE GUNDY (3 years ago)
Regardless of the situation, Mangino needs to stop the call-ins and keep his mouth shut. He's sounding as childish as his players.

Nope, Football is a violent sport.  If OU was 10-0 there would be many athletes in Norman taping the injury up and playing.  When losses accumulate and the team looses cohesiveness so does morale and the desire to be physically associated with the less than stellar play.   It's easier to pull out, not suit up and disassociate ones self from the losses recorded, I refer you to Team Pansy Syndrome...
