Texas Owns OU and OSU

Hey Nebraska, don't let an icicle hit you in the backside.

As everybody else was saying that Super Joe the OU AD, or Mighty Boren the OU pres, would save the Big 12, and while everybody else was saying that Notre Dame held the key to the future of college football, and while everybody else was wrong about everything else, we calmly explained that Nebraska, under the ancient leadership of Tom Osborne, held the key to the future of the great American game as we knew it, and that depression, revulsion, illogic and chaos were under the next rock.

Actually, who can blame Nebraska for taking the money.

Here's what's hard to understand: Why would the Big Ten want Nebraska, for the Beatrice or North Platte TV markets?

And as the madness unfolds -- all the heartland and the nut coast have in common is greed -- Notre Dame will probably have to join a conference. Who in his or her right mind would schedule the Irish?

Here's one of many rude awakenings to come from this confederacy of lap dogs: When Texas says this is the way it's going to be, OU and OSU follow obediently along, panting, tails wagging, like cockers.

Estimated population of entire state of Oklahoma-3.6 million. Estimated population of Houston-2.2 mil; Austin-1.7 mil; San Antonio-1.3 mil; Dallas-1.2 mil.

If OU & OSU are cockers, then the TX tv market is Clifford, the Big Red Dog. Guess whose tail wagging will make the biggest impact. As sad as it is to break up the Big 12, our schools better hitch up to the Pac 16 Gravy Train before it drives off into the sunset without us and we're left with nothing but Old Roy in our half-empty bowls.

OU cheerleaders don't need to take the conference collapse quite so hysterically.

True, the 405 in LA is a little testy. But the Grand Canyon comes into play.

Mr. Picker, thanks for stating the obvious on Texas. Last year, Texas Athletics made $50 million dollars more than OU did and much more than any of the other Big 12 teams made. So, of course Texas is pulling the strings of OU and OSU.

Nebraska is making a big mistake by joining the Big 10. Sure, they'll make more money. Nevertheless, now, they'll have to compete with the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Wisconsin for recruits in the Upper Midwest. Those teams have owned the Upper Midwest in recruiting for most of the past 20 years.

The conference collapse won't hurt OU at all. I think that it will help OU via the increase in television revenues.

Why in the world didn't the Big 12 come up with enough $ to keep Nebraska?

Listen, people, what can OU and OSU and the rest say except we love the west coast.

Before it happened, it would have been far down on the list of choices.

What happened to the Big 12 power brokers?

I think OU will be fine wherever they end up. I believe that Joe C. is more in touch than any of us and will ultimately do what's best for OU.

"Why in the world didn't the Big 12 come up with enough $ to keep Nebraska?"

Better question: Why in the world would they?
Paying someone to do something they don't want to do will only pacify for a short time. Ultimately, they will still be dissatisfied and still want to leave.

I think it's beautiful that Bevo is pulling the Sooner Schooner to the west - gotta love those beasts of burden.

Pick, I don't want to keep arguing this so can we just agree that Notre Dame was the Big 10's first option on who they wanted to join?

And yes, Texas most certainly holds the reins while OU and OSU are along for the ride. But I think there are a lot of advantages to that for the state schools as well.

Also, I think the Big 12 definitely told Nebraska to hold on just one more year for the TV negotiations so that they could get a huge boost in revenue. Unfortunately, I think there was more to this than money. Nebraska is bitter and wants out of Texas's shadow. I think their pride forced this decision.

Think I'll go with MexiMike on this. Nebraska used to love routinely beating up everybody in the Big 8 except for OU, whom they still beat a respectable number of times. Then, in the Big XII, all that Big Red invincibility went away. Nebraska not being Texas, once they lost that veneer of invincibility that means so much in college sports, they started losing to other schools, schools who hadn't beaten them in a long time. And like is so often true with human nature, they could dish it out ever so fine, but they couldn't take it. So, now they're looking for some place to go where maybe they can be invincible again. It'll be interesting to see how it works out for them. Maybe it will be easier for them to beat Ohio State once in a while than it was for them to beat Texas. They may play somewhat softer opposition in the Big X. However, I don't think they'll recruit quite as well as they did as a Big XII team with better state of Texas access either. So, ultimately what do they really gain ? They hate Texas so much they're willing to screw over KU, KSU, ISU and Mizzou, their neighbors with whom they've been affiliated so long ? Seems a touch classless to me. MexiMike's right, it's not really about the money.

Texas is a larger and richer University...no doubt, but...

Oklahoma is the "Big Dog" football power in the Big XII:

Rufnec, all the more reason for OU to stand its good ground and not help bail out the lousy PAC.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Rufnec, unfortunately none of that matters. Money talks and Texas has it by the boatloads. It's not necessarily right or good for the soul of college athletics, but it is true.
mannfordmom (3 years ago)
do you think there are secret midnight negotiations between Fox SW network and the powers-that-be at Texas with maybe a little hint of how much Fox is willing to pony up when their TV contract comes up for negotiation next spring? Gad, I hope so. I despise Pac 10 and their snobbery and out-of-control sense of entitlement.
SoonerDJ (3 years ago)
I'd just like to point 1 thing out. The top 3 National Championship totals across all athletics are in the Pac-10 and it isn't even close. UCLA has over 100 National Titles. This will also open up California as well as keeping Texas in the mix for recruiting. OU already has a toe-hold out west and this will make it a viable option. Add into the sanction handed down to USC and this is a huge opportunity. This will not only help the football program, but the athletics department as a whole.

None of that matters (especially the tainted statistics that use WWII as a benchmark).

What matters is 1) TV markets 2) Size of the fanbase 3) Academics (AAU membership and Research $$)

OU is riding on Texas coattails on all 3
