Texas QB Job Up for Grabs

Case McCoy younger brother of former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, came off the bench to help spark the Longhorns to a 17-16 come-from-behind win over BYU and could get his first start versus UCLA on Saturday. ERIC GAY/AP

Because it is Texas, and only because it is Texas, everything that happens to the Longhorns is significant to Oklahomans.

Oklahoma has an unmatched rivalry with the Longhorns and Oklahoma State has worked up a serious dislike of all things Texas, too.

So, when the Longhorns struggle coming out of the gate it is news in Oklahoma.

Texas is still looking for a quarterback. It is still looking for some offense.

In a 17-16 victory over BYU, Texas used three quarterbacks.

Garrett Gilbert appears to be done as the UT starter. Some type of alternation between Case McCoy and David Ash appears to be the new plan.

Without tipping his hand for the upcoming UCLA game, Texas coach Mack Brown said on the Monday Big 12 Conference teleconference, “We can change it up to get a spark.”

That probably means all three could see action against the Bruins if things aren’t going well on offense in that game.”...

There is still much talk about Texas A&M’s rumored move to the Southeastern Conference and what teams if any will be going to the Pac-12.

Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville has coached in the SEC and Big 12.
“There really isn’t that much difference (in the leagues),” said Tuberville.

Tuberville said the big difference is in style. He said the SEC is a more conservative league with an emphasis on running the ball and playing defense.

He said the Big 12 is about passing.

“But there is as much speed here as in the SEC,” said Tuberville.
Tuberville said the SEC defensive lines are bigger to stop the run where in the Big 12 “you better have some pass rushers”...

Tuberville said of his Red Raiders “It’ll be Baskin Robbins for us all season. It’ll be different flavors each week.”...

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said the Tigers “have to play better” than the Tigers did in a loss at Arizona State last week.

However, he was reluctant to be too critical of his team because of the way Arizona State played.

“I don’t want to devalue their performance, either.”...

Baylor started the season by beating previously 14th-ranked TCU. Then, the Bears were off last week.

“It is like starting the season all over again,” said Baylor coach Art Briles of an upcoming game with Stephen F. Austin.

Ryan Tannehill went to Texas A&M as a quarterback. So, making the transition from wide receiver to quarterback last year was not difficult.

“He kept going to quarterback meetings,” said A&M coach Mike Sherman. “He was taking snaps at quarterback.

“So, it wasn’t a tough transition back to quarterback.”
