Texas Tech: Choosing Sides
Published: 2/19/2009 8:05 PM

It's shameful the way that Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers treated that coach.
Mike Leach?
No. James Dickey.
The contractual tug of war waged this week between Myers and Leach raised all sorts of eyebrows -- and questions -- around the college football universe.
Are coaches overpaid? Should coaches show more loyalty? Is Texas Tech goofy enough to jettison Leach? Contracts usually benefit only coaches. Should contracts have clauses that protect employers?
Maybe you think Myers was right and Leach was wrong, or vice versa.
I'm siding with Leach because of Myers' background.
It's hard to find anyone who will say a bad word about Dickey, a former Texas Tech head coach and OSU assistant.
Myers was Dickey's boss at Texas Tech. In 2001, Myers dumped Dickey to hire a buddy, Bob Knight.
Dickey was let go with a 166-124 record, including a 30-2 season and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 1996.
Athletic directors have the right to fire coaches if they want. That's life.
But, from friends in the coaching community, I know details about the way Dickey's exit was handled. It was far less than above board and easily falls in the category of shoddy.
I don't know Gerald Myers. But I do know Dickey and anyone who would intentionally do him wrong should have difficulty looking at himself the mirror.

Mr. Tramel, the Dallas Morning News (to which I subscribe) has given extensive coverage to Leach-Myers in news and comments and while Leach's "agents" appear immature and unprofessional in this saga Mr. Myers comes across as someone trying to put out a small fire with a 55 gallon drum of jet fuel. Each and every one of his four addendum articles to the new contract were totally discarded by the Chancellor in his short meeting with Leach. Completely bizarre from beginning to end.
