The Dumb Season
Published: 5/4/2009 3:40 PM

The NBA contains some of the dumbest elements in all of sports.

That doesn't mean that it isn't exciting to watch the last seven minutes of a playoff game. It is.

But it's still the Los Angeles Fakers and Cleveland, with Cleveland winning it all.

It's still Dirk Noshotski of Dallas throwing up eggs in fourth quarters.

The TNT postgame show is still the best in the business.

Here's what's dumb.

Getting to move the ball to half court after a timeout late is like something you'd see on the Globetrotters, a guy on somebody's shoulders dunking.

The continuation rule is absurd, if some guy is thinking about shooting, he gets two free throws.

And the dumbest coaching move in the history of all competition has made its way into the NBA playoffs. This coaching blunder is where teams up three with less than ten seconds to go refrain from fouling.

Has anybody ever, once, college or pro or sandlot, been beaten after leading by three and fouling late? If so, once, ever, where? When? To the best of anybody's recollection, no team has ever hit the first free throw, gotten the rebound and scored, then won in overtime. Never ever.

If it has happened, it happened .0002 percent of the time.

Yet three-point shots are made a third of the time.

Coaches are either dumb or chicken or both.

So da’ Snicker waste his time watching Nothing but Boring basketball Association?

Snicker must enjoy those Michael Jordan “push offs”, the 5 step “continuation” no travel call, the all about ME attitude of the players, & of course, the “star” protection rule. Do NBA all-stars ever foul out?

Do NBA players actually, if ever, listen to their coaches who make millions less than the players?

The last 7 minutes of playoff basketball exciting? Nobody stretches 7 minutes into 7 hours better than the NBA whom advertisers love because its Nothing But Another timeout!

I was hoping for another blog about Hump, Lump, Chump, Dump or Stump.

Laffalot just explained why I gave up on the NBA years ago. I still remember the Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Bill Russell era when those guys played some great basketball. Sad to see it pass.

Yeah the NBA sucks, get rid of that team in Oklahoma City so this state has no ties with that worthless league....

Ain't nothin' but a waste of time watching it or commenting about it, all you guys are right on the money....

The NBA sucks a big one....

The Los Angeles "Fakers"...

Oh, I see what you did there. Very clever. Quick! Somebody put the Picker's amoeba shaped body up on a comedy stage! We found something he is slightly better at than writing sports blogs!

Now here's the tough question: Will they be laughing at your jokes--or directly at you?

Well, I guess that wasn't really that tough.

Why hasn't any NBA team contacted the picker about their coaching posiiton? The guy obviously has to be brilliant! He knows everything.

You pinheads could have impressed somebody by saying the Lakers weren't winning it all.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
