The Frozen Tundra of Dallas

John A. Ferguson, the late great sports writer at the Tulsa World, probably holds the record for longest weather-related delay at our newspaper.
He once went to Fayetteville to cover the Arkansas Razorbacks in a basketball game. He arrived on a Tuesday. He returned the following Tuesday.
That was back in the day when the road from Tulsa to Fayetteville was a twisting, tiny two-lane through the Ozarks.
I once got caught in a snowstorm in Fayetteville and it was two days before I got home.
But, I don’t remember anything like this current blizzard in the 32 years since I came to work at the Tulsa World.
Bad weather is part of the turf if you are a sports writer in Tulsa.
I even got caught in an ice storm when I was covering Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta (won by the St. Louis Rams in the Georgia Dome).
The bad weather stretched all the way to Dallas on Tuesday where freezing temps and snow greeted Super Bowl media day at Cowboys Stadium.
Every time this happens there is talk of avoiding any possible cold weather sites in the future Super Bowls.
However, already on the books is a Super Bowl at Indianapolis (in another dome stadium) next year and then to an outdoor stadium in 2014 in New Jersey.
So, weather, normally no factor for the Super Bowl, could become more than an annoyance for fans and media when it goes to the Meadowlands. It could be a factor in the actual game.

Living in north Texas I am beneficiary to the enormous financial effort to support this football game. I understand the NFL wanting to distribute its wealth around the country but an outdoor game in New Jersey early February is crazy. Perhaps the NFL thinks it can control the weather. Interesting that there are no closed roof facilities in the one part of the country that could definitely use some.

I agree ignatz. This blizzard has certainly affected the Super Bowl festivities this week, Dallas is a dead zone.
