The Great Coach Nolan and the "New" Sellout
Published: 5/17/2010 4:00 PM
Last Modified: 5/17/2010 4:00 PM

Coach Nolan (Richardson) is a genius.

He is coaching a team, the Tulsa Shock, which is just taking up the game of pro basketball.

And the other night in its season opener, the team almost won a game! This, despite an absense of the elementary hoop skill of shooting.

Coach Nolan is famous for instilling defensive fury and running endurance into the game of basketball. When operated according to plan, a player is apt to wind up under her basket, alone with the basketball. Unfortunately, if the other night is any example, the ball could then be shot into the $10 seats, which are way, way, way back there.

Whereas running and pressing is beautiful strategy for home games, as it sets the crowd to dancing, it can get a little funky on the road where, if you can't shoot straight, finals of 110-45 could cause consternation.

As regards the size of the crowds, it appears that the way you get a "new" sellout is by putting a curtain up around all the empty seats. Talk about revising the glass half-empty illusion, the "new" glass is all full once you break off its top half. Going along with the "new" sellout definition, the "new" diet could pertain to half a day, the "new" you could cease good behavior at 3 p.m.

One final thought concerning the excellent coach Nolan: Maybe, say, in the fall, he could, well, wander over to TU and, who knows, put on a whistle and see how that works out.

I am trying...trying...trying..to get interested in this. Nope, not happening. Nolan at TU? Any former living Coach at TU excepting King,Barnett, Phillips, and WOJO is ok with me. (Good Lord,I gave "Buzz" a pass).

What is the next big draw in Tulsa pro handball?

Give Self and a few others some credit but what do you people expect out of TU hoops? TU is a small, difficult private school. Not usually the formula for great D-1 basketball teams...

dcood, (re: Cornell).

Picker, 40 minutes of hell takes on whole new meaning?

40 minutes of "What the hell was that?"

dcood, (re: Cornell/Butler/St. Mary's). While Tulsa does have the smallest undergraduate enrollment than just about any other school, there are plenty out there that are doing a lot with comparable numbers across the board. Butler has a comparable undergraduate population.

wojo could stay around and... nevermind he couldn't carry Nolan's jock.

Why not have Nolan wander over to TU? He'd be better than Wojo.
