The Human Race: Are We Losing?
Published: 9/26/2007 1:34 PM
Last Modified: 9/26/2007 1:34 PM

This is who I am disappointed in following the Mike Gundy deal: The human race.
I'm not sure anybody is acting like they should.
Agree with Gundy and you get called names.
Agree with the columnist that sparked Gundy's blow-up and you get called names.
Gundy is being called names.
Jenni Carlson is being called names.
People are in the midst if reading both of their minds, attempting to find out if they had motives other than face value.
And everyone seems to have forgotten to be human. Maybe this is a good start-from-scratch reminder that we should all treat people like we want to be treated.
Maybe this will be such a revelation that people will start using their real names on message boards instead of throwing rocks anonymously. (Yeah, right.)
Just to be goofy, I'm going to start the goodwill tour by tossing out a few lines from Mel Brooks movies.
Mongo just pawn in game of life.
Put the candle back.
Frau Blucher.
Now, don't you feel better?

"Sir, hadn't you better buckle up?"
"Aw, buckle this!"

This commentary probably is what everyone needs to read and understand. This whole mess with Gundy (who I happen to agree with) has been played out. Maybe Lili Von Shtupp sang it best: "I'm ti-ed/So vewy, vewy ti-ed."

Displaying real names on message boards is a good idea, but wouldn't that expose Jenni Carlson's sources for her stories? No name calling here, just the "facts" and no one seems to want to write about the FACT that Jenni wrote of a scene in first person, as if she was there, when in fact she was 4 states away. when in reality, it was just another rumor or rumbling she was writing about. But she didn't say that.

And what happened to source attribution? How about qualifying it? "A source close to the football team," "a source inide the ath dept," etc. Have one newspaper market writers gotten that lazy?

There's at least one I can always count on to trust, though: Jimmie Tramel. Keep up the good work. It would be nice to hear your toughts on these commenst, though.

Hey, Jeff:
I think it has been said in other media forums (talk radio, etc.) that the writer was not at the Troy game, but you are correct in saying it hasn't been stated in print, as far as I know.
I think that raises this question: Do you have to be an eyewitness or can you take the word of someone who was an eyewitness?
Anonymous source attribution is a tricky deal. This one (and I have to plead goofy because I don't know who the sources were) seems to be an instance where sources were used in an attempt to shed light on a subject (why a qb change?) that coaches may have been tight-lipped about.
I think in light of everything, it is certainly fair to debate whether the media has the right to use anonymous sources and how often they should use them. I have used them in the past (sources said Tulsa will accept a C-USA bid, sources said such-and-such player will be out for the season due to a knee injury) to protect the identity of the person feeding me information, but my superiors have the right to ask me who my sources are.
In the source situations I mentioned regarding myself, it's not a matter of laziness, but moreso how can I get this information into print quickly before other media beats me to the punch with the story.
I hope I have answered your questions adequately. I am not going to pile on Gundy or pile on Jenni Carlson. Moreso, I think this is a great opportunity for all of us -- coaches and media -- to take a step back and examine how we do our business.
And, in response to the other message regarding Lili Von Shtupp: A wed wose, how wovewy.

Jimmy, I am a very big OSU fan. I have always thought Carlson was a very poor writer and thought the article was trash. That been said, as a father of boys, if my son's were to ever yell at a woman like that within my hearing I would drop the hammer on them. Don't tell me she works in a man's world, or other trash reasons. When did we quit raising our boys to be respectful men? Call me old school, call me small town.(I am) I understand emotions taking hold of someone. If that is the case, Mike should tell us. I have always liked Gundy and my boys look up to him as OSU's coach. But I have set them down and told them that behavior is not accepted, period. Also, my mom would kick my behind if she heard me do that! Keep up the good work. I enjoy your columns and blogs.

KEL, I think you hit the nail on the head. I have no dog in this fight (how 'bout that for two straight cliches), really could care less about the OSU situation. But I think you're right, it really does come down to our respect toward each other. Sounds like Gundy's comments since have been a bit contrite, wouldn't be surprised if his mama told him to act like a 40-year old man. It's my hope that the managing editor at The Oklahoman, someone I know, lives up to his ethical beliefs and passes the same message -- act like a adult and report what you know to be true -- onto Carlson.

Jimmie, The OPUBCO war machine had this coming for a long, long time. . . but this too shall pass!

You are a thoughtful writer!

Rick & Kel please back off the gender BULLS__T!that should never entered into the situation! Sometimes being politically correct makes me ill! the way the article was written was in horrible taste dosent make a dam what gender wrote it! And I seriously doubt that if someone ever attacks your children in any similiar form or fashion you will deffend them! You wont care what gender they are at all! And I also hope that what ever your childrens endevors may be ,I would hope that there coaches or teachers, mentors etc. are as passionate in deffending them as coach Gundy. Pollitically correctness all the time sometimes lessens the importance of a matter and dosent do anything to fix the problem, kinda like putting frosting on a cowpie! makes it look better but still wont eat it!

Yeah, Jim. Good idea.
It sounds like the newly found wisdom of a bully that's just been beat up. "Maybe we should be nicer to people!", he says.

Perhaps the media, whom has had this over self-indulgent, egomaniacal, condescending viewpoint for many years hadn't started the whole thing in the first place, we would be more human to each other.

The media, as you and all media types well know, is a very effective and powerful tool. You have the ability to reach many people and influence greatly. If you want everyone to be more human, then you, the media types, need to be at the forefront and never waiver dispite your overwhelming tendency to ignite controversy and the namecalling.

Practice what you preach before you become the bully that got the crap beat out of him first.
