The King Throws A Jab

In John Hoover's excellent piece in today's (Friday's) sports section, Switzer wonders how Stoops has lost to such heavy underdogs as, most recently, 22-plus dog Ralphie.

It's a good question. Here's one answer. OU is overrated on a yearly basis; thus the gigantic pointspreads. Why is OU so frequently overrated? Media hype. Some of the Homeric media hype comes as a result of coaching hype.

In related matters, can anybody recall a duller OU-Texas week? Larry, Curly and Moe on sports talk radio stations here and there are ruminating about junk like basketball! OU-Texas weekend! Sure, each has lost. But that makes the game more important than any in recent memory.

You wouldn't think some of the nutty fans have actually gone out there and have gotten lives, would you?

I'm getting a slight Texas vibe, as the point spread is over ten, and visions of a nervous OU quarterback come to mind.

ANY TEAM RATED FOR ANYTHING THAN JUST A FUN
THING TO TALK ABOUT FOR FANS ( OR MAYBE THE
BOOKIES) IN THE FIRST MONTH OF THE SEASON WHEN THEY NORMALLY PLAY NONCONFERENCE GAMES AGAINST
TEAMS THAT ARE VASTLY OVERMATCHED IS JUST AN
EXERCISE IN NONSENSE.

UNTIL A TEAM HAS PLAYED A MINIMUM OF 6 GAMES
INCLUDING AT LEAST 2 LEAGUE GAMES AND AT LEAST
2 ON THE ROAD IN A HOSTILE EVNIORMENT, WHO CAN
SAY HOW GOOD A TEAM REALLY IS?

SO THEY PLAY GAMES IN SEPT. BUT IS ANY GOOD TEAM AIMING FOR THE "NATIONAL CHAPIONSHIP" REALLY GOING TO TAKE ANY RISKS AT THAT TIME,
ESPECIALLY ON NON CONFERENCE GAMES.

THEY ARE MORE LIKE WHAT THE NFL CALLS PRE SEASON GAMES THAT GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO TRY OUT
DIFFERENT THINGS AND USE DIFFERENT PEOPLE BUT THEY ARE REALLY IRRELEVANT ONCE THE SEASON STARTS.

OU OVERARATED AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH YEAR?

DEFINITELY ALONG WITH THE PREVIOUS BIG POWERS IN THE SEC, OHIO STATE, MICHIGAN, NOTRE DAME,
USC, TEXAS, AND A HALF DOZEN MORE THAT WILL
ALMOST ALWAYS MAKE UP THE TOP 10-15 SPORTS IN THE POLLS THROUGH SEPT.

IT IS FUN FOR FANS AND ALUMNI BUT IN THE END IS
NOTHING MORE THAN RELYING ON WHERE THE TEAMS
FINISHED IN LAST YEAR´S POLL ( OR EVEN THE
RANKING OF THE FRESHMEN RECRUITING CLASS).

LIKE THE NFL AND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, YOU CAN
SKIP A BIG PART OF THE SEASON AND ONLY WATCH THE
LAST MONTH IF YOU WANT TO SEE WHO IS REALLY GOD AAND WHO SHOULD BE RATED AT THE TOP ( OR RATED
AT ALL).

has that guy ever heard of the no "all caps" rule?

anyway, so much for a jittery OU freshman QB.

Hey Picker, I know this is off topic, but can you talk some trash about Herm Edwards and the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff in next Thursday's picks column? They sure are terrible aren't they? Run, run, pass, punt? Please!!!
BTW, I absolutely love your column every week, have been reading since I was young. I take it the way it is meant to be and LMAO every time I read it. I always wish that it was longer.
The great thing about it is the mystery of who is behind it and I think that I would be disappointed if I knew the identity of the Great Picker.
Keep up the great work.

HEY STEVE, WHY IS LIAM SOCKEY YELLING AT US? His whole rant really doesn't make any sense at all and is full of run-on sentences, mispellings, horrid use of words, and bad punctuation. Too bad people do not proofread before they post (not just here, but in message boards everywhere). Sometimes I wonder how some people passed English class.

In your first Picker article of the season you asked the question "Does Mack Brown own Bob Stoops?" Bob Stoops has won 6 of the last 8 over Mack. Who owns who?

I agree with Watchdog: you cheat on your picks. You say the line is over 10 (above), you use 9 1/2 on your PICKS, then you pick OU by 13.
Then e.g. TU (-3 1/2) @ UTEP
you pick TU 41 UTEP 38
Just what did you pick here?
You manipulation, lying and cheating is quite clever, but doesn't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse, pig.

When you get your foot out of your mouth it will be easier for you to talk sense.
For example: This OU/Stoops bashing agenda is getting a bit tiresome. Got anything else? Guess not.
Just because you think a game is a Big Game, doesn't mean it actually is.
The 2007 OU/Texas Game was MUCH bigger than the Fiesta Bowl. OU won the OU/Texas Game. Big Game. Talk about it much?? NO. But you talk a lot about the Boise St. game. Your OU/Stoops bashing agenda is really getting old.

What about TU's melt down vs. UTEP?? OSU's horrible choke at TA&M???

You really are an OSU/T-Bone Pickens and TU Homer - much like you accuse others of being an OU homer.
It's OK, World Picker, you are where you belong-in the bush league.

World Picker: aka TU Homeric

We heard it from you first:
OU QB will get nervous in RR Shootout
Score: Sam Bradford 1; World Homeric 0
OU is overrated every year--
but, homer, by who(m) and when???? Pre-season?
2000 for example, pre- season OU-19; end of season OU-1. Is this an example of being 'overrated every year'?
Pre-season rankings mean nothing. Rankings change as more games are played. Even a homeric like you can understand that-else you could place all your puny teaser card bets for the entire season on Labor Day...Chump.
You might want to put a filter between your brain and your mouth. You say some real silly stuff - even for a TU homer.

Hope that is light enough for you, Francis.

ps. world homereic's anti OU, anti Stoops agenda is still wearing thin. He just can't help himself, can he?
Jas (5 years ago)
Stoop's teams have only once met or exceeded the pre season rankings. The BCS championship year. All other years his teams have finished lower. By the way, why is The University of Oklahoma called OU? Shouldn't it be UO as The University of Texas is UT?

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
