The Landry Jones Debate
Published: 4/26/2012 5:17 PM
Last Modified: 4/26/2012 5:17 PM

This year, Landry Jones would have been the second or third quarterback taken in the draft, perhaps even the second or third pick.

Here's a great question: Why did he come back to OU?

It's 50-50 he will be the first quarterback taken next year. Why? The USC guy is good. And the risk of injury is there. Ask receiver Broyles, who went from the first round to who knows where, same for linebacker Lewis. The best rule is: Sail when the windows starts to blow. Take the money and run. Don't risk taking lots less and limping.

In related gridiron news, the BCS as we knew it is dead. Praise be. Year after next there will be a four-team playoff. It is far better to cheat the fifth best team in the country than the third best.

Taking the money and running is easy. Landry had several reasons for staying, a g/f, proving himself for what happened after Broyles went down, getting his degree and maybe even a little team loyality. In our world money seems to be everything. I find it refreshing that OU can recruit kids that can put money second. Not all will do that, takes a lot of character to look millions of dollars in the eye and say, nope, wait til next year. Just shows not everyone is greedy, there are some good kids out there. I don't reserve that comment for just the OU guys that stayed, but for all those around the country that played another year in college when they could have come out, and don't see life as one big dollar sign.
