The Monster

We did it, we hit the monster pick this weekend.
We deal with two kinds of hits here, two kinds of sports. We pick games and behavior. Now, we've hit some big ones, Super Bowls and ESPN Invitational winners. But nothing as dramatic as this one.
Approximately several weeks, six hours and 25 minutes ago, we predicted that OU's win over one of the worst bowl teams imaginable, Uconn to some, Ucan't to most, would cause the roadies to proclaim that the BCS plague was over and that the Sooners could be the greatest ever.
Here's a fascinating tidbit about OU's program-changing victory over Ucan't: the Huskies coach had taken a job at Maryland and didn't even tell his team, which found out on the internet!
In sum, OU beat a team with no coach, no players, no past, no future, and, most importantly, no TV audience. The Fiesta Bowl ratings were down 30 percent. The Rose Bowl ratings were down 25 percent. Hopefully this beautiful reaction from astute fans will suggest to the ESPN Invitational that a change in its bogus post-season format is necessary.
Parallel universes exist in sports, inside the loops, and objectively.
Inside our state's loop, here are the top ten college coaches at the moment.
1. Stoops.
2. Stoops.
3. Stoops.
4. Stoops.
5. Stoops.
6. Stoops.
7. Stoops.
8. Stoops.
9. Stoops.
10. Patterson, TCU.
Here is our current top five list.
1. Patterson, TCU.
2. Kelly, Oregon.
3. The person who signed Newton to Auburn.
4. Saban, Bama.
5. Stoops.
And here is what the three in-state schools need.
OSU: The program is on the upswing, no doubt about it. The defense is fast and mean, the young runners promising. But what it needs most of all is Weeden to return. College football is a quarterback's game. Weeden throws strikes.
TU: The locals had the best bowl win. OU and OSU played two teams that could not combine to get arrested for disturbing the peace. How does Mike Stoops keep his job? But TU won a road game against a rated team. TU needs to keep its coach, who did a fantastic job.
OU: Finally, we figured out what's wrong with OU, wrong in the sense that it is a level below serious national title contender. OU needs a better run game. Under new play-caller Heupel, running seemed like even more of an afterthought than before. You can beat all the Ucant's throwing all the time. A better run game is essential. And, OU needs a mega-star playmaker on defense, somebody like TCU's Tank, somebody who can single-handedly win a game.
Is TCU the best of them all?
No way of knowing, thanks ESPN.

I generally agree with you, but Stoops' record in winning Big 12 Championships (that's where you gotta start to get a shot at the big game) speaks for itself. Now, if Auburn absolutely spanks Oregon ( and I believe that is a real possibility, much more so than vice versa)then I doubt if TCU could have whipped them. If the game is really close (1 or 2 pts) or Oregon wins then I believe TCU should be No. 1 or at least tied for the "honor". Sadly, it's all speculation. Shame on the BCS teams for allowing these repeated travesties to occur.

We're all behind Josh...he's a coach's coach's coach and can only improve with age; but it was apparent Saturday night that the run game wasn't his love child. He will certainly need to balance it out a bit; the problem with Wilson's offense wasn't an imbalance of plays, it was the predictability and lack of imagination of those plays. Heupel gets it. Give him time.
Is Stoops overrated? Certainly within the state he is; but nationally, they've caught on. Stoops is a good coach, but flawed. He simply needs to surround himself with assistants who can coach effectively. We've gotten rid of Wilson; now, who does that leave...?

Picker, yes, as my son and I watched OU's running back hit on the right tackle time and again for 2 or 3 yards we said the same things. He's more of a Charles Clay type (nothing wrong with that!) than a Billy Sims or Adrian Peterson. Maybe finding those guys is just not that easy.

What OU really needs is someone that can kick off 7 yards into the end Zone everytime ! !
wgspost
Amen Domo...for all the scholarships Stoops has tossed at kickers the past few years you'd think one would have leg enough to bounce one out of the back of the end zone from time to time.
And speaking of running backs, next year should be interesting. Finch, Calhoun (remember him?), Clay, and a young supporting cast combined with imaginative running and passing schemes will be promising.

We're just saying: If defeating Ucan't defines greatness, then here's another brilliant one, the Michigan coach, who, among others, obliterated the Huskies earlier.
Using Uconn as any measuring stick to future genius is not lowering the bar, it's burying the bar out by the septic tank.

As OU fans and supporters, we should tone down any comments about overcoming any BCS "Curse." We've done nothing of the kind. Toss us in the arena with an Auburn...a Boise...an Oregon...and give us a chance to play with teams on that level. Once we've cleared that hurdle, we're there.
The Picker

Why can't some people take the OU victory for what it was, a good win over a below average team in a lousy bowl system?
Why does a team have to be thought of as great next year? What's the need? Why not wait and see what happens with injuries? Grades? Ten-star recruits? The NFL?

How does Mike Stoops keep his job? He's at Arizona. If he goes at least 7-5 every regular season, he has no worries about job security. After all, it's still better than the 2-10 record they had in John Mackovic's final season at Arizona. Arizona's probably the best job in the country for Stoops on Red Bull.
We most definitely need a plus-one game. This would have given TCU a chance to play the winner of the Oregon-Auburn game. If there are two undefeated teams that have won their BCS bowl games, shouldn't they play each other for the national title?

ESPN has totally ruined the Bowl Game experience and their Homer crew all need to be replaced. You can start with Craig 'I never amounted to anything' James, then dump senile Lou Holtz, and work your way down to the air headed emotional chicks trying to womanize football. It's getting pretty disgusting and best watched on mute.

It is a shame OU hasn't had a running game over the past four years. That DeMarco Murray guy only:
Owns OU career all-purpose yards record with 6,498 yards ... also has OU record for career TDs (64) and career receiving yards by a RB (1,512) ...
is No. 6 in OU history with 3,524 rushing yards
... also has OU record for career TDs (64) and career receiving yards by a RB (1,512)
Just think, If OU had had a running game, someone might have noticed.

Picker, hang in there. Rave Dave is no match for you. Other than some subtle inconsistencies on what constitutes a "big game" for Bob, you've shown yourself to be fairly acurate.
When Dave can't think of anything to write, he simply fabricates things. Just two examples: (i) his article that Stoops would be fantasizing about being in this year's championship game instead of thinking how he could use this game to prepare for next year, only to have his own theory negated by Stoops's sideline comment to him; and (ii) his fabrication that Gundy ordered two fake punts against Troy because he was mad that Troy had beaten OSU the year before, despite the fact that Fodge told RA in the post-game that Gundy told him to kick it both times.
wgspost

Yeah, Loki, and he can't even grab a yard in a goal line situation. Think Owens would have had that problem?
The Picker

Soko, I thought I finally had the Big Game angle defined. A big game, a really big game, was any that could propel you toward a national championship. After a loss that took you away from that goal, not so big. No?
Kenmore

I think what you are overlooking is that Murray has never fully recovered from his injuries, Madu seems erratic, and that freshman guy...yea, that one, was injured as well.
Take away the injuries and you would have had a better run performance last week, no question. Heupel might be "pass happy", but he was working to his strengths in that game. What they need to get rid of is the "meerkat" look when in the red zone. Just call the freakin' play and hit the line quick.
Is TCU the best team? Maybe. Did Wisky make TCU look a lot better by not running the ball for two quarters? Definately. Especially when one of Wisky's big lugs (whichever one of 'em) was getting 5+ a carry, only to disappear 'till the 4th quarter and then BAM! Wisky starts blowing through TCU's defense again. Where's the hue 'n cry to sack the OC of Wisky's team?
What's interesting is how Stoops seems to have won in a no-win game. His status has gone up a bit even though UCONN was third-rate at best. I suppose the impact of sports blowhards around the nation isn't all what it's cracked up to be.

Picker, I agree on your definition of a big game, at least with respect to national power programs like OU. For schools like my Pokes who are striving to become elite, lesser-appearing games are big for it. I considered aTm, Taco and the Whorns to all be big games this year.
I was giving you some static a few weeks ago because you referred to Bedlam as a big game. I was just using your definition from years past to observe that, under your definitions, Bedlam was the classic "medium game" for Stoops, which you acknowledged after Bedlam. We straight.
Now if I can just get you to agree that OU's seasons are defined by championships, rather than whether it beats texas, I will think you are worthy of Sporstwriter of the Year honors.
Oh, wait... . Only Dave is eligible for that....

wgspost: Since you had to bring it up.
I remember Steve Owens. I think Picker carried his books and wrote his term papers, which might account for Picker's animus towards the feetballers.
Try to juxtapose your opinion with what actually happened. NOBODY in OU's history scored more touchdowns. For explication, that means he crossed the goal line more than anybody else.
His rushing yards happened in a pass-happy offense where rushing plays accounted for no more than 40 percent of the plays (estimate).
Owens: Career carries 905 for 3,867 yards.
Murray: Career carries 759 for 3,685 yards.
Murray's yards per carry come in higher than Owens'.
As all the cool kids say, you do the math. Further, Murray has been plagued with injuries. Curiously, Murray has not garnered much credit for his actual performance versus the "opinion" surrounding him.

A wooden stake for the "Medium Game Bob" shibboleth, for your dining and dancing pleasure.
The BCS was established for one purpose (besides money), to match the top ranked team against the second ranked team. It has delivered that. Before the BCS, the 1-2 matchup happened less than ten percent of the time. It's every year now.
In the BCS era, Bob Stoops' Sooners have played for more national championships than any other program or coach.
More than Meyers.
More than Saban.
More than Carroll.
More than Tressel.
More than Bowden.
More than Kelly.
More than Patterson.
Would it be nice to have won more of those games? Clearly, yes.
But Stoops has put his team in the BCS Championship Game more than any of his contemporaneous "Giants" (None of whom have been saddled with a juvenile moniker by a graceless peanut gallery.)
wgspost

Loki...you may remember Owens, but do you remember the offensive lines that blocked for him and the schemes they used? Do you remember the offensive coordinator, Barry Switzer? No one is arguing the quality of today's OU backs; Murray is terrific and deserves his accolades; Calhoun hasn't had a chance but those close to the heat say he doesn't have the speed or the moves to be compared with some of the best OU backs; Finch has us all slathering at the bit and there are freshman 'afoot' who may make us forget even Murray. But the offensive scheme run by Wilson was anemic; look at the problems we've had in the red zone the past two years. When a team is consistently unable to crack the ball over from three feet then something is wrong. About this, you cannot argue; those are the facts of which you're so fond of referring. Oh, and you forgot to mention one of Stoops achievements: he has lost more head-to-head BCS championships than any other coach and his teams have been embarrassed in high-visibility situations more often than those of anyone who has held the reins in Norman (barring John Blake). Whether you'd like to admit it or not, it's far, far better to go to a mid-range bowl and be competitive than to be buggy-whipped in front of a national TV audience in a failed attempt at a national title. No one ever tattooed 55 points on Bud's or Barry's backside...

Loki, nobody is saying that Bob hasn't gotten his team into a bunch of big games. His accomplishments at OU are truly impressive. The one that impressed me the most is the 11 game winning seasons compared to the other power teams and coaches.
The name "Big Game Bob" was given to Stoops because he WON big games. When his record in big games suffered, Pick-man coined the rather original (despite Dave's incorrect claim that it was unoriginal) title of "Medium Game Bob".
As Picker has explained his original term (and, since it's his, we should give him that opportunity) a national power program like OU only has a "big" game if the game further drives OU towards another MNC title. Others, like playing for the south and conference titles in years where OU isn't in the national title hunt, are "medium" games.
Pick-man calling him "Medium Game Bob" is actually an acknowledgement by Pick-man that Stoops WINS those games (like he used to win "big" games). If Stoops's record in those games weren't so good, we'd have to call him something else.
After OU's road woes this year and the fact that Bedlam (although it was a big game for OSU) was, under Picker's terminology, only a "medium" game for Stoops, I posted that, if Stoops lost on the road in Bedlam, we should start calling him "Home Game Bob". When he won, I came back and said he deserved to continue to be called "Medium Game Bob".
It's all good, clean fun. Every thinking person has to admire what Stoops has done. One of my favorite Stoops comments was after he lost his last "big game". He was unfazed by the questions at the presser and said something like, "And when we get home, we're going back to work to try to get to the title game next year, if it's all the same to all of you." Championship stuff, that.

Pickers just getting back at Sittler's article from today, he's MAD! Of course rather than state the obvious he just makes fun of Stoops, and ridicules any wins OU might have. Oh yes, only National Championship games are big, or, in Pickers opinion, games you lose so that you are not in the running any longer........ Nobody but Picker ever said the UConn win was a "program changer" what a bunch of crap. The most that has been said is it gets the monkey off OU's back, but Stoops doesn't give the press that kind of satisfaction by saying that is the case, so people like the Picker attack for no reason, oh, except to get people to read and respond to their drivel. The closest Picker comes to the truth is his statement that the Bowl series is bogus, gee what a genius the Picker is to realize that. Thank you Picker we couldn't figure that out on our own, what a great mentor you have turned out to be.
OU_Sooner74

Picker, it's just amazing to all of us that you were able to realize that OU would win the Fiesta against UConn, given your inability to pick most of the bowls preceding correctly. You even missed the UConn game actually, didn't you predict 13 point spread, O Great Genius? Sittler has your number little feller, go get him!
sokodad

74, I think Picker's use of the phrase a "program-changing victory" was not so much his opinion as it was his use of the literary device of sarcasm, in that he was comparing some recent criticisms by Dave (the man who doesn't like "flip-flopping")of OU's coaching to Dave's headline that the victory somehow "proves" Stoops's "brilliance".
If nothing, the Picker has been consistent. He labled the Fiesta something like a "very little" game before it was played and has argued in comments to this blog that it was just a win against a substandard team; again, responding to Dave's claim that it demonstrates brilliance. And he didn't resort to name calling or straw-man arguements in doing so, as Dave did in his critique of, presumably, the Picker.
You seem to believe, as I do, that Stoops is doing a great job at OU. Would you be any less excited about his prospects of winning next year, or of his brilliance, had OU lost the game?
I think it would be fun to have the Picker and Dave meet in a cyber verbal gridiron grudge match for the ages. Dave is a multiple winner of Sportswriter of the Year and knows something about football. Pick-man is a professional writer who not only knows football, but also can discern whether he is writing fiction versus non-fiction when he is writing it.
I would take the Pick-man and give the points. Any amount of points.

I've been reading Dave since he wrote for the Oklahoman and I've been reading the Picker since he was the Tribune Picker.
Give the points.
