The NCAA Is A Joke
Published: 6/3/2009 1:24 PM
Last Modified: 6/3/2009 1:24 PM

How exactly is the NCAA handling the Reggie Bush family fiasco at USC?

How exactly is the NCAA handling the Mayo basketball fiasco at USC?

The NCAA must be scared of USC.

Here's what the NCAA does beautifully: take half a scholarship away from Panhandle Tech because its baseball team fell below the proper grade-point average by .001.

How dare the NCAA EVER talk about grades because it MAKES basketball stars go to college one year! The percentage of one-year players who will ever graduate: 000000001. The percentage who go to class: 00000001. The percentage who have books: 000001.

Forbidding young people who can die while serving their country from making a living at basketball at a similar age has to be against law after law after.

Encouraging the existence, and use, of one-year non-student athletes is lower than a con game.

I agree about the USC scandal...but this wouldn't be the first time a national power has been let off the hook because of the money they bring in (OU, I'm looking in your direction).

But the student athlete does NOT need to be paid. In fact, he/she is ALREADY being paid. Free room and board, free meals, free travel, free apparel, and most importantly, free recognition for whatever they choose to do after college.

I know several ex-athletes that have AMAZING jobs simply because they were on OSU's final four team or a third stringer on the OU national championship team.

In my opinion, that's payment enough.
Lance-a-lot (4 years ago)
Paying athletes is a dumb idea. They CAN get a free college education. How many of the rest of us would take that deal?

The NCAA is a joke, right up there with 911 (for all you Public Enemy fans).
Gene M (4 years ago)
Mr. Picker, who is forbidding young people from making a living playing basketball? If this question causes you hesitation, call your friend LeBron. He will help you.
The Picker (4 years ago)
Gene, the NCAA makes high school guys stay out of the NBA a year.

What's your Belmont pick? I need somebody to run a line through.
But What Do I Know? (4 years ago)
Picker, is that an NCAA rule that actually means something and is enforced?
Gene M (4 years ago)
Mr. Picker, on Saturday I'm thinking of a box with 1 - 2 - 6 and 7. My longshot is Flying Private.
The Picker (4 years ago)
WDIK: Yeah, it's a rule. The rule is a player can no longer go from high school to the NBA; and a player has to be 19 years of age as well.

So it's two rules.

It's why that high school kid went to Spain to play for bread, instead of some college.

Football does it as well, restricts a person's right to earn a living for a longer period of time, even.

The NCAA encourages cheating, etc. Why even wake up for one year on campus!

To sue the NCAA, some kid would probably have to give up his career, as it would ring around the courts forever.

But the NCAA should be ashamed, as it says: Go to school one year, play around, have a nice time, then bail.

Gene: The one couldn't outrun you.
Gene M (4 years ago)
Mr. Picker, what's so shabby about a year or two in college? For many student/athletes, who need time to mature, that would be a nice first step. Obviously . . . you haven't seen me run.

I think Peterson test driving a Lexus for a couple of months is a good example of the gooners getting away with a violation. But hey, I guess everyone test drives vehicles that amount of time....

The NCAA is a joke. It's been a joke since giving SMU the Death Penalty, from which SMU has never recovered.
The NCAA sure does flex it's muscle when dealing with a Panhandle State or even a lesser Div 1 A school, but when it comes to USC, Ohio State or Oklahoma, it rolls over.
The most powerful schools like USC with Reggie Bush and O.J. Mayo will continue to do as they do with impunity because the NCAA is their puppet.
The NCAA is like the bully in school -- he sure acts tough around the smaller, younger kids, but when faced with someone who'll fight him back, the NCAA turns tail.
The NCAA should be disbanded and replace with a real organization that is interested in making applicable rules and enforcing those rules that are fair and inclusive for ALL SCHOOLS.
The NCAA has lost the respect of most major institutions -- those with the ways and means of fighting the NCAA in court.
The NCAA members are just protecting their paychecks and lifestyles now.
Get rid of them. Get rid of this ineffectual, plastic regime now.

"Besides, I wager an OSU or Texas homer writes a letter a week to the NCAA about OU "cheating".

Oh tattoo, how did I know you were going to throw something like that in your post.

I was kinda following you until that bombshell.

But, I am sure your right. UT and OSU are always writing to the NCAA about OU. It makes perfect sense.
The Picker (4 years ago)
What's wrong with some kid who doesn't want to be there cheating and sponging off the taxpayers?

Gosh, Gene, nothing.

Everything 3D said is exactly on the button.

Basketball note: Stan Van Gumby coached the worst game in the history of playoff hoops last night. He played a guy who hadn't on the court in months and completely disrupted the momentum of a team on a roll. He owes Orlando fans and ABC an apology, as the second half ratings must have been sad.

Belmont today; take a 7-all exacta, hope for a longshot for second.
buster (4 years ago)
I mean take a 4-all.
The Picker (4 years ago)
Concerning the Belmont, I of course had Dunkirk who ran a gutty second; and collected as usual.

Hey Gene, your horse just finished.

Tattoo, OU was slapped on the wrist for having at least two student athletes being paid for work not done. Their wins that year were stricken from the record books....for about 6 months and then reinstated (although I thought that was beat-around-the-bush worthless punishment in the first place). Their schollies were limited the next year but all that meant was that they lifted schollies from other players who never set foot on the field to free up more.

OU is a huge power in the NCAA football world. It doesn't matter how big the OKC metroplex is. The fact is that over 80,000 people buy season tickets every year and all of them (and more) buy tons of OU apparel for themselves and their families that the NCAA gets a piece of. OU fans also travel very well to bowl games and the NCAA counts on that for even more revenue.

The point is while the penalty should have been harsher (and likely would have been if the school would have been T-Tech, Mizzou, etc.), the NCAA didn't want to bite the hand that feeds it and proved that OU is on the list of elite schools that are untouchable.
SoonerDJ (4 years ago)
After the 3 year ban in the late 80's OU turned its attitude around. Any football violation that has been found at OU has been self reported. I'm not sure about Kelvin Sampson and the phone calls. The point is that OU and other colleges like FSU have been quickly dealt with. USC, on the other hand, has not. This is thier second supposed violation. You would at least think that the NCAA would send a team thier to do a preliminary just to see if there is any basis to the reports/rumors. As far as I know nothing like that has happened. It just seems too fishy to me. Why would a 5 star BB player in the hotbed of the NCAA Basketball country (ACC/Big East) go all the way over to Cali where the chances of winning a NC are slim. The guy was good enough to be on Duke, North Carolina, and all of the other elites right in his own back yard. Something lured him there and we know it isn't program prestige or the chance to be on a NC calibre team!

Tattoo,

Many OSU fans do have a hatred for all things OU, and vice versa with OU fans and OSU.

I realize that people will attack them and bring up NCAA violations and such.

But your silly post about Chris Collins is just that, silly.

If you want to bring up something that happened in the past, why not just talk about the OU players who raped girls in the dorms during the good ol' Switzer days?

Oh, thats right, because it is irrelevent now. OSU and OU will have problem kids. For OSU, people like Prentice Elliott, Collins, etc. For OU, Dusty D, Bomar, etc.

It is not like both schools don't have problem players. Many programs do.

So, to those OSU fans who want to attack an OU player remember we have had our share of issues.

And to tattoo, any player you want to bring up about OSU, there is probably a player(s) from OU that had a similar issue.

And in my opinion, OU did get lucky with the NCAA a couple of years ago. Mainly because it wasn't just football, but basketball, gymnastics (who cheats in that?), etc. They did get lucky, and lost very minimal scholarships. What was it, 3 for football?

And the NCAA is a silly organization.

Thats all. Carry on.....
OutPickMyNose (4 years ago)
And also, I misspelled "Irrelevant". Oops.
OutPickMyNose (4 years ago)
Tattoo,

For some reason, my last post wouldn't stick. The link wouldn't work.

I don't think I can put a link to the story on here, but why don't you type in "Oklahoma Sooners Switzer NY Times Rape" on google. See what you come up with.

3 players were named in a reported rape on campus.

Sorry to point this out to you, but sometimes it needs to happen when someone like yourself seems to be a "know it all". Everything that basically could have been a nightmare for any NCAA program happened to OU then. Talking smack is silly for either school, though. We all have our problems.

I have no problem dishing it and taking it. But, in reality I try not to do either. See above post for more clarity. Since I know you just focused on one sentence and acted like you read the whole post.

It does seem like the NCAA is taking FOREVER on the USC matter. The problem was getting testimony from the sports agents that paid Bush. The agents sued Bush for reneging on their deal and Bush settled with them out of court with nondisclosure stipulations. Until Bush reneged on the actual payment, leaving the agent free to talk to the NCAA, there was inadequate proof. Since it has been combined with the Mayo charges, things should pick-up. Insiders are convinced that there will be an announcement around the start of Football season. The problem is (regarding Bush, not Mayo) there's not much evidence that USC was in the know.
The Picker (4 years ago)
No Tattoo, I collected an Exacta payoff on my Dunkirk bet of $121; and did you see the poor thing broke a cannon bone during the race! Otherwise he would have won by 15!
OutPickMyNose (4 years ago)
Tatto,

It really is comical that you are even trying to tell me that any type of rape, regardless of the outcome, is better then another.

First of all, those players were playing football at OU on scholarship when they raped someone. Collins was 16 when it occured. OSU took a chance on the kid, and it backfired. He was a model student at OSU. Were those 3 OU players model students? Do you really want to compare?

And don't talk to me about learning to read, nit wit. You cleary can not comprehend any rational thought outside of Norman. I called you out on something and you try to make it sound better for those OU players. Haha, one word for you and your entire life D-E-N-I-A-L.

I have never seen a bigger homer or loser. Enjoy your parents house, I hear it is comfy there.

The fact that you actually think OSU has had more problems then OU in any area of NCAA athletics is comical and seriously requires a certain level of crazy only an OU fan could achieve.

Keep up the good work.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
Tattoo, first I love how you try to put the blame on any OSU fan for not being objective but then turn around and use terms like "Stoolwater." Oh yeah, very obective, hypocrite (notice, there is an "E" in the spelling).

Also, if you think the NCAA doesn't get a piece of the pie in ANY college revenue, then it is you who is living in a fantasy world.

Finally, no, the punishment was NOT severe enough on OU for the players who were caught being paid for work not done. The self-imposed consequences did not affect a single OU accomplishment since they were put into place. OU has won at least 2 Big 12 championships since then and has played in BCS bowls every single year as well, including a national championship.

How is that a punishment? The last I checked, consequences for mistakes are supposed to lead to sacrifices by said party. The only thing OU sacrificed were a limited amount of scholarships that didn't affect their records at all. The NCAA let them off the hook, plain and simple, because they are a national power in college football.
