The New TU Basketball Coach!
Published: 3/28/2012 3:36 PM
Last Modified: 3/28/2012 3:36 PM

Should be the old TU basketball coach.

Everybody makes mistakes.

And it appears TU could have made a big one.

It sounded like a good idea to look for a coach who had won a game or two in the NCAA tournament.

But after taking a look at the finalist list, coach Doug is better than any of those. Get coach Wojo back.

Rehiring a recent fire would generate tons of great publicity.

Wojo's only flaw was that Michigan State stuck in the sand offense. He ran a clean operation. He's clearly better than the current list of bench dusters and people who have never won a tournament game.

Admit the mistake. Hire back coach Doug fast before you pick some lemon and set the program back ten more years.

And it might be a fair idea if coach Sutton of ORU quit interviewing for so many jobs. After a while, a person interviewing all over the place but not getting hired loses something in the lack of translation.

Mr. Picker, you're not supposed to swallow the mouth wash.

Nice sarcasm on the Coach Wojo debate, or do you believe Tulsa deserves 7 more years of mediocrity.

Danny Manning!

Has he been coaching, or arranging the towels?

Step right up and get your season tickets, forty six bucks.

It started out as sarcasm, 21472, but after looking at the "wish list," it turned into something of a decent idea in about two minutes.
But What Do I Know? (11 months ago)
"Wojo's only flaw was that Michigan State stuck in the sand offense."

I think that was a big part of his problem, his inability or refusal to change. That MS offense (which is HIGHLY offensive) didn't attract enough talented players, and the fans didn't like it and stayed home. Had he run a more exciting offense I think he might still be the coach. Maybe it was his military background.

And about Manning, I'm nervous that he will be another Matt Doherty. Great player, big time name, can't coach. If Manning is the man I hope I'm wrong.

Key Differences:
Doherty ever played in the NBA and was out of coaching for several years while on Wall St. Was a top asst for a few years and immediately hired on at a big time program as a HC. He never had to work his way through a small program to learn how to be a head coach and went immediately to Notre Dame where expectations are ridiculous and the media pressure even more ridiculous. Doherty had success at Notre Dame and then went to the land of impossible expectations in Carolina. If you don't win every year, you're on the chopping block. Nobody should judge Doherty's abilities on his SMU experience. SMU is a dead end job in basketball. You can't win at basketball at SMU. Facilities suck and there is no modern tradition at SMU.

Manning: successful NBA career, successful asst coaching stint developing post players, and by all accounts, a successful recruiter. TU is the perfect first step and not unlike when Tubby Smith was hired (I believe Tubby was a Kentucky assistant at the time TU hired him, after stops at VCU and So Carolina). I think Manning is ready for this. By all the chatter and the crashing of Twitter caused by the Manning hire, there is already a ton of excitement surrounding the TU program.

You can be a naysayer all you want, but Manning brings instant cred back to the TU basketball program, there's been an instant rejuvenation of the fan base, and I'm sure some TU recruits are thinking they might give a little more consideration to coming to school here. To me, that's a win.

Give Manning 3 years.

Yep, there’s no risk for Manning.
IF he bombs @ TU
he could always go back to KU in some capacity

He’ll get the attention of recruits
But can he close the deal &
of course the unknown
How will he handle game day coaching,
especially when its close & under 2 minutes.

TU is in the position that it has the roll the dice
to hopefully hire someone who has a Huge up side

Does he realized how scrutinize he’ll be next year
What happens IF TU finishes around .500?

I know you're just trying to get us riled up, Picker! You must be kidding!!

What about Terry Evans? Billy Gillespie or Pooh Williamson?

I would even suggest Nolan Richardson, if not for the terrible job he did with the WNBA team.

TU Basketball will rise again.

Hopefully the current players on the team will give the new coach a chance and not all try to leave.

Is any coach available who has won a single, solitary NCAA tournament game? Or is TU relegated to the "others?"
Uncle Jed (11 months ago)
TU needs someone with coaching no-how. Manning has no experience...

TU picks new coach from "Others" list.

It is amazing that the World continues to use a columnist who is less objective and less informed than the average TU fan. Maybe you should turn your talents to Helping Coach W secure a new position.
