The ORU Lesson
Published: 3/6/2012 3:39 PM
Last Modified: 3/6/2012 3:39 PM

Regular readers of this material are aware of the arguments we have had with a number of ORU fans concerning the suitability of this basketball team for NCAA tournament play.

The feeling among fans and the like was that ORU was improving at a rapid rate and was a Big Dance team.

We here at the Picks are 110 percent objective. We hope all local teams win. When they don't, we're there with the real goods.

We saw a pretty pitiful OU team obliterate ORU, suggesting that since the Titans were in a conference comprised of Iceberg State and Frostbite U., perhaps the NIT tournament was the more logical post- season site.

And man did we catch it from ORU fans.

And everybody saw what happened as a team headed to the Sunspot Conference took down ORU in a low-scoring contest.

The illusion of improvement often has to do with a lack of high quality competition.

The 27 wins was a mirage.

ORU is of Christ. I don't know basketball but I know of miracles.

You'd better watch out, Picker. You're going up against Jeeezus now.

For those readers wondering why more ORU fans aren't on here screaming "FOUL!!" at The Picker for his painfully obvious baiting tactics: none of us care what he thinks! But, we are thoroughly enjoying all the national talk this week regarding ORU's merits as an NCAA "bubble team" leading up to Selection Sunday. I guess those guys on ESPN, CBS, etc. have no problem with ORU's schedule, or its Top 50 RPI. As a fan base, it's safe to say we put a LOT more stock in the opinions of nationally-recognized college basketball experts, as opposed to local, semi-retired, grumpy old men who can't decide from one day to the next whether they want to write about sports, television programming, or dogs.

ORU's conference schedule will get even easier next season, when the Eagles join the Southland Conference. At the end of this season, The Summit League's Conference RPI was No. 16, and the Southland's Conference RPI was No. 28 (out of 32).

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
