The Oklahoma State quest for .500

During any given game week, I make frequent use of the Oklahoma State media guide. Having been in my possession since late July, this particular guide has a lot of mileage on it.
So frequent is my perusal of the guide’s contents that I occasionally overlook something basic but really compelling – like this:
Tulsa World staff member Mark Foster reports that if the 10-1 Cowboys defeat Oklahoma on Saturday, win the Big 12 Championship contest next week and close the season with a bowl victory, Oklahoma State will have evened its all-time record at 521-521-47.
OSU would be at .500 or better for the first time since the 1991 season. During the ‘90s, the Cowboys were 27 games below .500, so they’ve been scrambling to return to the better side of the .500 mark.
In and of itself, “The Return to .500” won’t be celebrated with commemorative T-shirts. With OSU having built a stable program while rolling for five consecutive winning seasons, it was inevitable that the Cowboys soon would return to .500 and beyond. But absolutely no one expected that it might happen with 13 victories from a team that was picked to finish fifth in the Big 12 South.
