The Only Thing More Important Than Money
Published: 10/10/2012 2:38 PM

In sports, it used to be said that numerous things were more essential than cash: sportsmanship, a degree (not the third degree by the cops, a college degree), loyalty, health, family, and a rousing sense of tradition.

Yeah, well, anymore, we're down to one thing that is more important than money: Playing the OU-Texas game at the Cotton Bowl at the State Fair of Texas.

Home and home, please, ordinary games are played on a regular home and away basis.

Jerry's World is better as party monster than an athletic site. It's gargantuan, spectacular, antiseptic, impersonal. From a seat in the peanut gallery, players look like bugs. Everybody watches the screen. It's interesting, not fun.

The OU-Texas football game is as much a part of the State Fair of Texas as is Big Tex. That fair makes stuff around here look like county-type events.

School executives are pouty because hot and cold faucets in the Cotton Bowl restrooms are rusty? They're using a lack of conveniences as an excuse for greed?

Tough.

Raise your millions somewhere else.

Any coach or athletic director or school president who doesn't wholeheartedly support the traditional site for this game will be remembered for the villainous action that ended one of the great events in American sports history.

AMEN Picker! Jerry's world is where the Dallas Cowboys lose on Sundays, not an appropriate site for the OU/TX game.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
