The Press Box and Steve

The press box at the University of Phoenix Stadium, the home of Monday's Fiesta Bowl, is named after Steve Schoenfeld.
That won't mean much to most folks but it does to me.
Steve, a Tulsa Tribune sports writer from 1979 to 1985, was a good friend of mine.
We broke into the business about the same time. We moved around in the same circles in Tulsa.
My wife and I have been friends with Steve and his wife, Robin, for 20 years.
Steve, who later moved to Dallas and then landed at the Arizona Republic in 1988, was killed by a hit-and-run driver in 2000.
Anyone who knew Steve knew they had a friend for life. And, you would hear about it often.
Steve loved to talk on the phone. It wasn't unusual to talk with him on the phone 10 or more times a week. And, I wasn't alone. He talked to dozens of people every week.
He seemed to have a phone attached to his ear. If he were alive today, he'd love those new cell phones that attach to your ear. He could talk constantly these days.
Steve had a good heart and was a good guy. We vacationed in Phoenix a few times he never failed, along with
Robin, to show us and everyone with us a great time.
Walking into the press box at the new stadium, where a picture of Steve greets when you get off the elevator, touched my heart.
He was a good guy, a guy that grew up with me in the business, who is gone.
I miss him calling me every few minutes when the big story breaks.
So, it is nice to see him remembered in such a manner.
Because there was no place Steve would rather be than in a press box.

Dear John,
It is with great pleasure I came across your
Blog. To take the time to remember Steve every once in a while is refreshing. What a wonderful press facility . and to see your comments about Steve many years after his passing is really special . Best of luck to you.

Sincerely,

Bruce Schoenfeld
