The Sorry Little Punt
Published: 10/26/2010 3:22 PM
Last Modified: 10/26/2010 3:26 PM

With slightly more than two minutes to go versus Missouri, and OU trailing by nine with no timeouts left, Stoops gave up and punted.

That's one sad state of affairs.

If you don't think you have a chance, you give up?

What about competing and fighting to the last second, no matter the odds?

This is lowest moment of the current regime, whose best moments came more than a decade ago. It was such an unpleasant event, most people are reluctant to write or talk about it. It was an unfitting conclusion to a recent history of fourth quarter folds -- the inability to handle pressure.

Some think the punt was done to save style points in the crooked and disgusting BCS system. What a cop-out. Conference records will determine who goes to the BCS bowls, not somebody would vote you down for trying. How could anybody think something bad could come from doing your best? What about what the players think about surrendering? You didn't have to score. How about making a lousy first down. And guess what. Missouri probably had class and would have taken a knee and run out the clock.

Can you blame him ???? When he looked around for advice from his assistants they were all looking at him for answers....

It was probably one of those "chasing his tail moments" & he got tired because he couldn't catch up....

So, punt, go lay down & wait for next week....

I don't think Stoops or his staff should be fired, but I am beginning to wonder if they have taken this football program as far as they can take it. The way they stub their toe every year, I don't see them winning another national championship. Might not be a bad idea for him to take his staff someplace else where they are better appreciated and where they can build a program into a contender. Then again, Switzer had his down years before he won it all in 1985.

This team is not the one to do it. Too many holes, too many freshmen. Give it a couple of years and these young men will take it all. As of right now, how about Josh Heupel for Offensive coordinator? Back in 2000, it looked like he called all the plays on the field. That was very apparent the following year with Hybl at the helm.
The Picker (2 years ago)
When negatives continue for a prolonged period of time, no big game wins in ages, a lack of fourth quarter guts recently, a horrific road record, a new idea or two wouldn't be such a bad thing. Everybody knows what a great job Stoops has done and is doing. But a fresh injection of defensive ideas wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Josh absolutely did not call his own plays back in 2000 it was the fat man making the calls. What was very apparent the following year was the graduation of half the team, and the fact that Josh Huepel is a baby faced killer. Think Wilson was the problem the other night? Puhleese. Problem is becoming obvious, pure stubborness on coaching staffs part, they continue to play a complicated defense with young guys who need to be told what to do on each play instead of "reading" what to do on each play, adjust the system to the kids not the kids to the system. When Mizzou went 4 wide on right and single on left, and Stoops had to call time out, you should have known it was going to be long night. There has been less confusion in a Yogi Bera quote then OU had on defense against MO.
norsemustang (2 years ago)
Don's World, I completely agree that they need to simplify their defense a great deal. Case in point 2008. They got beat by Texas because of their mistakes on defense, so they simplified things and then destroyed Texas Tech. To me, a defense is only as good as how mistake prone it is. I know they are trying to be flexible and trying to match up with each team, but it is useless because of the mistakes they make. They need to install their defense a little at a time instead of throwing nearly the entire package at them on day one.

Nothing wrong with a sophisticated system. But you have to recruit kids with the intelligence to execute it. You can't put knuckle-draggers in the chemistry lab and expect good results.
Blue&Gold (2 years ago)
Again Pick, you and I agree. I was flabbergasted with the decision to punt. During his press conference yesterday, Stoops said he didn't want the final score to appear to be a blowout. What? So you stop trying to win the game? I believe it was Herm Edwards when he was the coach of the Jets and they were awful, and after a loss in which he took some risks, Edwards said "You play to win the game".

Message to Coach Stoops, you play to win the game.
But What Do I Know? (2 years ago)
What is a knuckle-dragger?
Sooner transplant (2 years ago)
SHUT UP you ignorant fools! (including you, Nose-Picker) You are not the coach, so it doesn't really matter what you "think". You want to challenge every play that was called by the coaching staff that wasn't successful? Show us your credentials as a football coach/play caller. There is valid reasoning in punting. And I suppose that all the successful plays that were called by the OU staff, you would've called exactly the same? YOU DON'T KNOW SQUAT! Every play that is called by the coaching staff anywhere has a chance of being successful....if it is executed properly. It all comes down to players....yours and theirs. But to blame the coaches for every negative play is just plain IGNORANT.

I think everyone knows I am an OSU fan. But still, I have tremendous respect for Bob Stoops.

With that said, that call was the most cowardly decision I have ever seen him make. In essence, he told his players to give up. And why? For style points?

That isn't the Bob Stoops I use to know.

Where is the attitude of always going for the win? What happened to that killer instinct? If Mizzou scores again, who cares? I'd rather have that and tell my players to go down swinging.

As it stands now, the players have it in their heads that their own coach didn't think they could get the yards necessary to keep the drive moving. Is that the stuff that builds confidence?

Extremely poor decision by Coach Stoops.

What IF ECU had given up on that last play against TU?

What IF Don Bailey OSU kicker had given up @ the last second & not kicked that field goal against Texas A&M?

What IF Mich St had given up on that last play against Notre Dame?

What IF Tampa Bay & Josh Freeman had given up on that last play against the Rams last week?

What IF Kordell Stewart & Colorado gave up on that last play against Michigan?

What if Doug Fluete & Boston College had given up on the last play against Miami?

What IF Landry, Bob Stoops, & co. had not given up & punted the ball on their last play?
I guess we will never know.

The point is this: the coaching staff is dropping the ball...period. Many of you are missing the point entirely. That Stoops "got tired because he couldn't catch up"...that we have a "young team"...are both irrelevant. The point Pick is making, among others, is that the philosophy became one of capitulation when OU punted in the waning moments of the game. When the Sooners were getting their jock straps handed to them by USC in the Orange Bowl, they were asking the Trojans-across the line of scrimmage-to slack off. Where do you suppose this attitude originated? When you have a coaching staff that tosses in the towel instead of slugging it out for 60 minutes, little can be expected in crunch time when the back is against the wall. And who, if not Wilson, do you blame for an offensive lack of originality and/or creativity? OU killed Iowa State with bubble pass left and bubble pass right; when Missouri took this play away from the Sooners, the response should have been to pass downfield, an option Jones was unable to execute (passes were overthrown, underthrown, or tossed to guys with 'M's on their noggin). And let's not even discuss clock management. And Sooner Transplant, go back to junior college. You don't have to be able to lay an egg to smell a rotten one, you don't have to be able to write a poem the caliber of Robert Frost to realize how trite the works of Rod McKuen might be, and you don't need to have coached even on the middle school level to realize incompetence when it rears its stupid head; did you happen to watch the BYU game last year? Wilson should have been put on the first bus to Wichita after the final whistle.
We're all grateful to Stoops for what he has done for the program since 1999; 2000 was a miracle year unsurpassed by most other championship seasons. But I contend it is better to achieve to the point of only going to a secondary bowl and being competitive than to ascend to a championship game on national television and get buggywhipped by any other school. That sort of exposure does nothing but besmirch OU's great tradition.

Besmirch? Besmirch?

OU won 2 games this year because the opponent fumbled a punt at the end of the game. Stoops WAS playing the odds.

I think that Bob Stoops has done a great job at OU. However, I have to disagree with that decision. You don't give up in that situation by punting. You don't worry about the BCS. You worry about winning. You get paid to win football games.

I want to see Blake Bell throw the ball!!!!! He was the #2 QB recruit in the nation! What are we saving him for? Maybe he can actually remain calm and not throw interceptions at games away from Norman!!!!
dcood (2 years ago)
Good call on Blake Bell...Jones is a semi finalist for the Davey Obrien award and will probably make a pro roster in 2 years. Genius!
wgspost (2 years ago)
Let's see what Drew Allen can do before we burn a year of eligibilty on Bell...
Blue&Gold (2 years ago)
Sooner Transplant, you have a good point. However, the decision has to be taken in the context of the game. KNowing the score, the time left, and the fact that the OU defense had little success in getting any 3 and outs, it was a poor decision if Stoops was trying to win the game.

Your point is well taken though. As a fan of the New England Patriots, everyone gripes about Belichick going for it on 4th and short against the Colts last year, not making it and losing the game. They forget however, the brilliant decision to take a safety and go for the free kick and field position which turned out to be a game winner.

About the only thing worse than making a depressing decision is defending it.

Now that the Thunder begins their season tonight, we can all forget about the state's sorry football teams....

So what if OU & OSU have only lost one game, neither one can play for the BCS championship this season, so why even bother paying attention anymore.... Oh I guess both can win a Big 12 championship & I guess if that's good enough for Bob Stoops then it's good enough for Mike Gundy & if it's good enough for them then it must be good enough for everyone else....

Big 12 South Champions rule (in the Big 12 South) !!!!
wgspost (2 years ago)
I wouldn't say OU can't win the national title this year...it's true that it would take an incredible chain of unlikely circumstances to occur, but that scenario played out in '75. What makes it truly unlikely are guys like Wilson, Martinez, and Vulnerables strolling the sidelines.

wgspost -

true there is a chance but Bob has decided to punt the rest of the year. He doesn't wanna make a fool of himself by trying something challenging, no new plays revealed this season, sit down the seniors it's time to start rebuilding for next year!!

Stoops is a coward
