The TU Crowd

To make hirings run smoother at TU, the job application should start this way.
Name:
Address:
Have you been interviewed by the FBI?:

On the best of days, the TU football team is up against it when it comes to crowds.
Nobody wants to see the Hooterville Cam put into use: That's the national TV camera that blurs the background shots of all the empty seats.
Concerning stadium crowds: All three games involving state teams kick off at about the same time Saturday morning.
OU fans will want to see their team compete for a conference championship and possible BCS bowl.
OSU fans will want to see if their team can bounce back from the OU debacle.
Football fans in general will opt to see the best teams play.
So TU is left to fend for its crowd numbers among students, grads, friends, relatives, and good-hearted citizens.

With a school like TU, there is little margin for error.
To get big crowds, you have to win a lot. Period.
You have to win two of three against the likes of Iowa State, which is decent, Arkansas, which stinks, and SMU, which is worse than Arkansas.

And now on the eve of a possible conference championship, and TV competition from OU and OSU, comes TU's most recent administrative scandal.
First, the university president is dismissed for behavior allegedly unbecoming even a juco transfer.
Next, the athletic director is linked to illegal gambling.
Talk about a lack of leadership upstairs.
If somebody deserves to see some friendly faces, it is this football team.

We are aware of where Pick went to college, but the article was about putting some friendly faces into Chapman Stadium. Just wondered if his was going to be one of them since he was concerned on attenance.

If TU can't get into a decent middle major conference fast, its basketball and football programs competing at a high level are over. If the home crowds are bad now in both sports, think how many people would want to pay money to see the likes of North Texas, UTSA, Old Dominion, Charlotte, Florida International, and Middle Tennessee? What will happen to recruiting? And how many exceptional undergrads now here would transfer?

Warrior is right, wins over lousy teams mean nothing when it comes to attracting crowds.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
