The TU Hire
Published: 1/14/2011 2:03 PM

Graham was a former head coach who kicked backside at Rice.

A finalist this time was an option quarterback under You-Know-Who at OU.

The winner this time was a recent high school coach.

There's a pretty good former high school coach running things at Auburn isn't there. That guy did invent the modern pass game. Let's keep the option stuff in the scrapbook.

So, in conclusion:

Well.

Okay.

What a waste of digital space - nothing interesting or newsworthy here. Move along.

Measured, even-handed assessment. At odds with the hyperventilating mob, I like it.

Thank you Loki. You have good sense and are welcome to stay.

The obvious point to all except blithering serial responders is that TU has gone from looking at head coaches at major universities to looking at entry-level assistants.

Anybody who does not think that's a risk is blinded by the hype.

Word is, several of the people who helped to build TU were not involved in the selection process.

So there's a chance that the football program won't crash and burn under BB, that's very encouraging. I do sense that the hiring of BB was done on the cheap, the $1.2-$1.3 yearly lottery payout Todd and his wife double were receiving had to be hurting the university, especially considering that football attendance had flatlined at Chapman even with the 10 win seasons.

Cowboy T, you're exactly right, there is the impression that budgetary considerations helped to prompt the decision. But somebody said the TU endowment is in the, oh, trillions.

At a small school like TU, there is no margin for a hiring error, zero.

Safest? Head coach from somewhere.

Riskiest? Entry-level assistant.

It's all about recruiting. Sure there's hope.

I love this.

Chad Morris was a high school coach just last summer and there were those ready to crown him king. "But look at the recruits he brought in you say"...Oh wait he didn't do any recruiting.

So if Morris had been hired as head coach would there have been the inane question of "But can he recruit outside Oklahoma?"

"Budgetary considerations"?

How do you know how fat his pay envelope will be or how fat TG's was?

Did you see the W2?

Does your "sense" give you clairvoyance enough to winnow the winning Powerball numbers for this Saturday?
BobSmith007 (2 years ago)
Yeah. It takes a rocket scientist to figure out the paydays for those two guys.

Don't assistants cost less than major college head coaches?
Batfish (2 years ago)
Hey Picker, stop posting while drunk. Or stupid.
hootie (2 years ago)
Don't try using logic Pick! You will confuse many!!

The hardest part of being a writer like the picker would be dealing with posters like Batfish. What does 'or stupid' actually mean? Batfish, you're sinking...
The Picker (2 years ago)
CowboyT, it's true, having to debate with the empty heads whether an unknown assistant or a major head coach would cost more does get tiresome.

Picker, please punch sittler in the mouth. Everyone will thank you.

It is neither good nor bad, it is a Hey how bout that situation. BB says he is taking it to the next level? Where exactly is that and how do you get there from TU? This past year is about as good as it will get for TU, it resembled much the other best Years in TU history, a win over Big Name school, chance at small conference championship, entertaining lil team, nice little bowl win, chance to see some local kids play. I like TU, I do not expect more then that from them, anything like this past year from them is simply gravy for State Football fans.
You have choice at TU you hire old loyal player, who may or may not be good at next level, or you hire great college assistant or out of work Head coach, he gives you one or two good years and he is gone. Hey how 'bout that.

Hoss made me laugh!

We'll know more about BB when we know his assistants. I'm not so much concerned about his lack of college coaching experience as his overall philosophy of who to hire to get TU to the next level. Will he take chances with young, promising talent (ala Malzhan) or coaches who just tow his line.

I'll admit my first reaction to his hiring was "this smells a lot like when Phillips took over for Buzz" several years back. And while BB should be given a chance, he should also be let go a lot quicker than Dave Raeder was if he crashes.

Regardless, TU isn't going to the fill the stands anytime soon outside of OU/OSU or a national contender like Boise St. showing up. I don't expect BB to change that since half empty stands have been a tradition at TU for a long, long time.

How about this comparison;Texas State University in San Antonio,3 years ago didn't even have a football program and still hasn't played a game, hired Larry Coker. Now compare the names TU was chasing and the eventual hire, who was right under their nose all the time.

What's the over/under on how long it takes before Josh Blakenship is on staff?
Tulsan in Exile (2 years ago)
In BB's press conference, he was wonferfully confident... but sounded a bit too much like Keith Burns (minus the legendary ego). If he can recruit (not just players, but assistants) this hire will turn out OK. But to be successful in D-1 coaching, you have to be REALLY HIGH ENERGY, which is why coaches seem to be burned out by the age at which BB is coming in. That, more than anything else, is what makes me skeptical.

"Exile", I donno, I kind of liked the word "wonferfully", it sort of flows over the tongue. w o n f e r f u l l y. Anyway, I hope it all works out for us (TU).Mexi....2 years. I've lived in Muskogee.

I was beginning to develop sweaty palms in anticipation of next year's OU - TU game. Perfect formula for ol' Bobby to choke; fired up inspired team with little recognition but talent coming to play a complacent #1 Sooner team. Reminiscent of the TCU fiasco a few years ago. But with Graham gone and Blankenship coming in, I can relax...

TU's hire. NOT ok!
