The Worst Play in Football

This site was the first to:

Inform the world that that Cowboy safety (and OU-ex) Roy Williams couldn't cover a manhole.

Change Big Game Bob's nickname to Medium Game Bob.

Publish the news that basketball coaches who played to the camera, the Pitinos of the world, were jokes -- hey Dickie V, how do you like your all-time favorite now, pal? Pitino should be fired before nightfall.

Declare that Cowboy quarterback Tony Nomo was a lightweight.

Suggest that tennis star Sharapova had outgrown the sport, had grown too tall.
Break the news that Tiger was not yet the greatest ever.

Win Nickname of the Year with this, for former OU coach Chuck "Third and" Long.

Deduce that Neil Everett was the worst ESPN anchor in sports history.

And now comes confirmation that:

The option is the worst play in college football.

Nothing says we can't compete on the elite level like the option.

It's what the West Virginia's and Oregon's of the world run, mid-level teams trying to ride a gimmick to the big time.

Saint Tebow doesn't run the option.

He runs the fullback crash.

The spread option isn't quite as ugly as the old-fashioned sideways pitch option, but it's close.

The spread option at least sends the quarterback straight.

But it will only take a team so far.

Why?

Quarterbacks can either run or pass, they can't do both equally well because each discipline requires so much practice. Pro quarterbacks Vince Young and Michael Vick throw like the option quarterbacks they are. Young tried a spread option play the other night in the pro opener and was almost knocked unconscious.

The sideways pitch option, favored for some reason by teams near an opponent's goal line, for a loss of six and most likely a fumble, is another way of saying we're not quite good enough to man up.

Actually, Florida runs the triple option occasionally.

OU sure had a hard time stopping that "mid-level" WVU spread option team that stomped them in the fiesta bowl...

And Teebow does run the option...

The option works in college. It doesn't work in the pros. No big discovery there. OSU gashed many teams with the option play last season. Ask Mizzou.

By the way, just because you form an opinion like, "Tiger isn't the best ever," it doesn't make you a visionary. It just makes you a local blogger with a false sense of importance.

I could state that "The Picker writes the same regurgitated slop over and over" but it's not "breaking news."

Hey picker if the option is the worst play in football, then why does Barry Switzer's wishbone offense in the 70s have  rushing records that still stand to this day.(472 yards per game in 71)If you had said worst play in the NFL you might have a point, but the option to me is still one of the best plays in college if executed right.

Uh, because they were running against 1971 defenses? You know, linebackers that went about 5-11, 190.

Bob you really don't have a clue what you're talking about, defenses back in the 70s and 80s were just as tough as they are now if not tougher, they're weren't as many rules protecting offenses back then as there are now.

509:

You're promoting the option and I don't have a clue. This is all a joke, right?

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
