The first Picker column is finally here
Published: 8/28/2008 8:35 AM

Here are the stories we're working on at press time.

Will some Oklahoma City Thunder basketball players commute from Seattle?

Has anybody ever seen a baseball park (like ours) that will face mostly into an anti-homer prevailing southerly wind?

Will the members of the Eagles make it through their dedication gig here without approximately four intermissions?

Read the rest of the column and check out the Picker column each Thursday this football season.

YEA!!!! I LOVE the picker! I fight my dear hubby for the sports page on Thursday mornings during football season so I can see what the picker has to say. It's always a bit of a let down when the season is over. Welcome back picker!!!

Ok Pick, I know you hate the sports talk radio in OKC but at the same time an interesting debate has come up. It is a discussion on the last line of the national anthem when played at OU home games and how all the fans scream "Home of the Sooners" instead of "Home of the Brave." There are many people, including Sooner fans, that find it very disrespectful. On the other side, there are fans that don't see what the big deal is. What's your take?

Who needs a new Dawn when we have this one.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Which is not in any way to suggest Dawn is anything but in her prime.
Stay close, Dawn, sometimes they get rude.

Dawn: the check is in the mail.
Thanks, sis.

I'm with Dawn, some of us "get it" Sir.

I'm that lost Okie livin' at the Airport in Baghdad and I really enjoy your blog (update more often). Thank God for the internet. Please keep the pressure on the city of Tulsa, they can come back. What about Les and App st., no love? I will be looking forward to your muses.

By the way, do I have to agree with you to be a fan?

You've been away too long, Baghdad Airport correspondent.

Bet you think the same thing.

Saying 'home of the sooners' during the anthem is disrespectful and says 'I'm an inbred idiot'.

The sooners have some of the most disgusting and thoughtless fans on the planet. Sadly the worst of them don't have education enough to read these comments.

Yes, I have, but the end is near!!

TS,
Is it hateful and disrespectful because they are saying Sooners? Sooners are Americans right?

Nice. Don't have education enough???? English 101 anyone?

MIKE (4 years ago)
How is saying Sooners instead of Brave equivalent to Tulsan and Oklahoman??? That is the worst analogy I have ever heard! Sooners are Americans but that doesn't mean that everyone is a Sooner you baffoon. Beside that point, the song is an anthem for our country. One that was written to honor those who have sacrificed so that we can enjoy football in the first place. For sooner fans to be so smug to change ANY word in the song, especially the last, is extremely distasteful and the fact people can't see that just baffles me.

Mike,
So do you feel the same way towards the K-State fans and other teams fans that do the same thing.

Get back from the ledge baby....
MIKE (4 years ago)
Absolutely.
cyco myko (4 years ago)
The K.C. Chiefs have been yelling "Chiefs" at the end of the national anthem at their games for years. I'm sure lots of stadiums do the same thing. I, for one, have not missed an OU home game in 14 years and have never yelled "Sooners" at the end of the nat'l. anthem.
Is it any more disrespectful to not place your hand over your heart or to not take your hat off? What about not singing the words or not standing to look towards the flag?
These are things that I see people doing at every football game I watch, in person and on tv.
But since this is the "land of the free", people can do whatever the hell they want. Right?
You people made me forget why I even got on here... oh yeah:
Hey Licker. Why don't you take a permanent intermission?
MIKE (4 years ago)
If you choose not to particpate in the national anthem in some way it is totally different than if you purposely exploit it to make the team you are rooting for higher than the country the song represents.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
