The morning after Houston
Published: 9/7/2008 1:02 PM

Did my eyes deceive me? Were there "only" 45,001 fans inside Boone Pickens Stadium for Saturday night's victory against Houston?

Is the new capacity of the stadium really 60,000? Seems to me there could not have been 15,000 unoccupied and/or unsold seats for Oklahoma State's home opener.

Yes, there were a few pockets on unoccupied seats. But with approximately 15,000 more seats this season than the previous two seasons, almost all of which appeared to be occupied, I find it hard to fathom Saturday night's announced attendance was just a little more than 1,200 fans higher than the best BPS crowd in the last two years.

If you were in attendance Saturday night, tell me your thoughts about the crowd, the atmosphere, and the performance on the field. Do the Cowboys truly have a home-field advantage now?

Game balls
***Dez Bryant: All I can say is that this guy is a freak. NINE catches for 236 yards and THREE touchdowns! Are you kidding me? A 71-yard touchdown on a punt return as well? Unbelievable! Dez is a difference maker supreme with a capital D.
***Kendall Hunter: Spud was simply sensational. He surpassed his previous career-best total (125) in the second quarter and finished with 210 yards. Not only did he display the breakaway threat (his 58-yard TD run in the first quarter), he also showed he could gain the tough yardage as well (that big 3-yard gain on 3rd and short on OSU's touchdown drive right before halftime was huge).
***Offensive line: Last week, the Wickline five did not have one of their better efforts at Washington State. Against Houston, the group of Russell Okung, Andrew Lewis, David Washington, Steve Denning and Brady Bond imposed their will on the Cougars as the night went along.

Cowboy checklist
***The loss of Lucien Antoine is significant: The hard-hitting junior-college transfer safety will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. Antoine was seeing a good number of snaps in OSU's five-defensive back alignment, and was a devastating blocker on kick return units. OSU will be pressed to replace those particular aspects due to his season-ending injury.
***Calling all catchers: A few pass catchers not named Dez Bryant or Brandon Pettigrew are going to have to emerge and make some receptions in the very near future. Bryant and Pettigrew are the go-to guys in the OSU passing game, and it's very likely opposing defenses from now on will structure their schemes to limit those as much as possible.

I would have to agree about the attendance. I definitely thought there were more than 45,000. There were three pockets missing fans of what looked like no more than a couple thousand. Where were the other 9,000 missing seats? I'm no crowd estimator by any means but if the stadium capacity really is 60,000 then I have no idea how the attendance was that low. Also, the stadium showed signs of promise for big games. Bedlam is going to be LOUD. I sat in the west endzone so I don't know what it was like from my normal seats, but it was louder than I've heard it in that stadium in four or five years. The only negative is nervousness about playing a real team. Houston has a good offense and good quarterback and Mike Gundy pulled the defense back to only guarding against the big play to make sure that the offense got some time off of the field, but it's hard to tell how good we really are. It looks like the offense has more than returned. It looks like our guys should get some good experience before playing a very good Mizzou.

Also, did any other OSU feel elated at the Colorado game yesterday? If Colorado keeps playing like that our win total should be at least 8 (WSU, HU, MSU, Troy, A&M, CU, BU, ISU). If that is the case and we can pull an upset(OU in Stillwater, Mizzou, Tech or A&M), a 9 win regular season before returning a large amount of people (only lose two starters on offense the downside it one of them is Pettigrew) would be great momentum for next season.

I attended the game and was in the West Endzone. I thought there was a lot more then was reported. I got photos of the north side and south side. There was hardly any seats without people in them. That was my first time at the Stadium aside from the Orange and White game. I thought the atmosphere was awesome.

A large portion of the empty seats are the middle of the field center sections on both north and south sides, some areas in the west end zone and the north club levels. All mostly the way overpriced (our old seats for over 20 years) tickets for a college football game. Our family enjoyed our new tix in the west endzone. Someone else can pay $250 - $500 PER GAME per seat and those are the empty seats. Go figure.

Five thousand is the maximum number of additonal bodies that could have squeezed into that stadium.

I was at the game as well sitting near the student section on the north side. If the attendance was 45,000 then that was the largest 45,000 I have ever seen. The west endzone was PACKED. Only the top corners were spotty and the same for the sides of the South seating (I couldn't see the North sides from where I was sitting).

My concern is not the defense, but the fans. With as many people as we had in the stadium I felt it should have been a LOT louder than it was. Maybe it's just me, but where I'm from you don't sit when the defense is on the field--especially when it's third down. If we want to create a stadium presence for the nation to notice, we need to bring our basketball mentality into BPS!

Arthur, I agree with your Colorado assessment but refuse to make any claims just yet because yes, I am that superstitious and I don't want to jinx it!

I too was at the game, on the south side, and in no way were there 15,000 fans missing...there were just too many people there for it to be only 45,001 (the official count).

And as far as Mike's concerns about the fans, I was thoroughly impressed with our support during the defense's third down attempts. The alumni on the south side stood and yelled every time, and the fact that my hearing is just now coming back this morning is proof of that...

Kelsey, I appreciate the counterpoint. I can only speak for the mass of "fans" that I was sitting with on the North side.

How many people can the suites and club seats hold? My guess is those are the seats that were unoccupied and created such a misleading number. Maybe they can release the percentage of regular seats that were full. That may change things completely.

I was at the game as well.

I can't believe the crowd was only 45K. No way, no way.

I can't figure out how they came up with that number.

Dale you are correct $200 plus to watch is crazy. There were many open seats in the old D and C sections, the eclub level was also not close to full. I set in the EZ and while it was full it was not packed the rwo behind had 6 plus open and next to me had several 1 and 2 open seats. 45000 is correct, your tickets are scanned when you enter the stadium

Just an idea, I didn't make the OSU game. However, 45000 out of 60000 is 75% full. Or, 1 unoccupied seat for every 3 occupied. Imagine the effect of have everyone spread out in groups of 3, leaving one seat each side of the group empty or filled with blankets, cups, nachos, etc. That stadium would look very much full.

There is no way that we had 15k empty seats on Saturday! Section 202 was packed to the gills were I was located. I was very impressed with all of the students at the game!!! GO POKES!
