The rebuilding of OU basketball has to start somewhere. And so...

Tuesday, Oklahoma basketball strength and conditioning coach Jozsef Szendrei took what's left of the Sooners' roster -- in terms of on-campus scholarship players, that amounts to Cade Davis, Steven Pledger, Andrew Fitzgerald and Kyle Hardrick -- out for a timed mile run.

Jeff Capel, appearing on Mark Rodgers' Oklahoma City Sports Animal show Wednesday afternoon, takes it from there...

"It's the first time we've run it. We've worked them hard. They've worked hard. They've really bought in. There hasn't been any questioning why we're doing anything. Body language hasn't been poor. 'I don't wanna be here' or 'I'd rather be doing something else.' Or guys saying they're not gonna be doing anything. There hasn't been any of that, which is stuff that we had last summer and stuff that we had in the fall.

"Those guys completely bought in, and everyone on our team, everyone that's returning, their mile times went down significantly, which is pretty amazing.

"One of the things that does is number one, it makes them feel good about it. It makes them feel good about working. Number two, what it does is I think we have a really, really good foundation now for when these new guys (OU's six incoming freshmen/transfers). Because the summer is going to be as important as anything that we do, how our guys work this summer."
