Their paths crossed: Garrick McGee and Ochocinco

Arkansas offensive coordinator and former Oklahoma quarterback Garrick McGee began his coaching career at Langston in 1996. Also showing up on campus that year was a fellow named Chad Johnson, who later would become Chad Ochocinco.

McGee was asked if he has an Ochocinco story. This is what he said:

"This guy came in as a quarterback. We went to a convention down there and we recruited him (from Miami, Fla.) He came to Langston and when he ran out on the field, the first time you ever laid eyes on him, you went ‘this guy is a star.’ Not only because of the way he can run and move, but his personality. My wife and I watch the Ochocinco show and that’s him. That’s how he has always been. This guy is a superstar. He’s just got to get exposed. But you knew it as soon as you met him."

He graduated magna cum laude from Northeastern State University with a journalism degree and, while attending college, was sports editor of the Pryor Daily Times. He joined the Tulsa World on Oct. 17, 1989, the same day an earthquake struck the World Series. He is the OSU basketball beat writer and a columnist and feature writer during football season. In 2007, he wrote a book about Oklahoma State football with former Cowboy coach Pat Jones.
