They Got It Wrong

So, I was channel surfing Saturday night and noticed that VH1 was counting down the all-time top heavy metal bands and -- hey, those guys are goofy because they ranked Motley Crue below Iggy Pop -- and this blog is actually about sports if you can make it to the next sentence.
The wonderful, and aggravating, thing about rankings is that they are subjective. One man's trash is really another man's treasure, which is why they sell pickled pig's feet at grocery stores.
Yes, in my opinion, VH1 botched the heavy metal rankings. But I also respect the fact that they took on the task of trying to rank everyone.
In Sunday's paper, I attempted to rank the five best football players with Oklahoma ties ever to suit up for every NFL team. It is a flawed project, of course, because there is no such thing as the best. It's all a matter of opinion. I want and expect people to disagree with my picks because everyone should have their own opinion.
Already this morning I got a polite e-mail from someone who said Steve Owens should have been on the list. I've got no problem with Steve Owens. He was a great college player and he was a decent pro. He had a 1,000-yard season in the pros, which would have been enough to get him on the list of many NFL teams, but the Lions have had many, many great players with Oklahoma roots and that's also why Checotah's Tracy Scroggins, who had 60 sacks in 10 years, also got left off the Lions' list.
The pro list was about NFL accomplishments only and had nothing to do with collegiate accomplishments. Any list of great collegians would include not only Owens, but also Billy Vessels and Jason White, two others that you won't find on the all-time list of great pros in Sunday's paper.
One more thing: If you put together a list of all-time good guys, Steve Owens would be near the top of the list.
