It appears that this site could reach new heights this season.

One reason for that is we know a joke when we see one.

Readership and halfway competent responses are way up.

This site has regulars checking in from locations ranging from the airport in Baghdad to the flats of Norman.

The Picker is calling on all alleged punks to raise the levels of their games this season, to quit being such simple-minded homers, to quit being victims of the obvious, to think outside the six-pack.

Here is the kind of creative thinking that is welcome here. Somebody asked the Picker's opinion of the following. TU recently announced that two of its best runners would also be used on defense, not as jumpers at the goal line, as actual defenders, in there where you could get something pulled, pinched, bitten or twisted. Isn't that a worrisome revelation? Doesn't that suggested that the TU defense still could have a long way to go?

The Picker responds: Yeah, we've seen better announcements. This isn't the Ivy League. This is real football.

On the clock this season: The OU defensive staff in general, and the coordinator in particular. It appears somewhat possible that since Mike Stoops left, this has been a gopher ball defense.

Bring back the Iron-Man players!

If you have good players that CAN play both ways - let 'em.
Like my High School coach said - if the defense sucks - play offense BOTH ways!!

Bring back the good 'ole "Gordie Lockbaum" kind of football!!!!

With my Mad Cow disease I often think outside the box, or get out of the box, one of the two.

You never answered my fantasy Olympic track and field team question: Do you think JuJu Mobandy from the Gold Coast will win the 100 meter dash? I still have time to trade him.

This should be the last shot for Wilson as offensive coordinator at OU. He has promised a more flexible offense than his one play, hike and hand it off routine.

I still have bad dreams of that lard bucket WV full back lumbering down the field 55 yards for a touchdown.

I largely agree regarding Clay and Adams on defense. The only thing I can reckon is that TU has unusual depth this year at tailback (Williams is supposed to have a breakout year, Tennial is back, this Charlie O is something else), and given how the offense is all about maximizing total plays, it makes sense to put your best players on the field as much as you can, given the limited numbers of carries to go around.

But, I agree -- both have been hurt before and are too good at what they do to risk it. Clay did play defense in high school and was recruited to play D for Miami and Arkansas; Adams played D in high school as well.

But,it's not often TU has a returning 1,200 yard rusher and 1,000 yard receiver. Agree that it's probably a bigger indicment of the defense.

Speaking of players that can go both ways.... I'm sure the tulsa world licker has been going both ways for a long time. I doubt the tulsa world licker cares which side of that ball he's on.

Norm, you get bonus points for mentioning Gordie Lockbaum who played where? Holy Cross, a school who went undefeated and was not allowed to play in the I-AA playoffs because the Patriot League as a whole says it will interfere with finals. I'm all about the 2 way players but am worried about Tarrion as one since he has had some sort of nagging injury every year he's been at TU. And TAB...TU has a 1,200 yard rusher, and THREE (3) 1,000 yd receivers returning (Clay, Marion, Johnson...with the incredible hands). Not to mention 2 newcomers from SEC schools blazing down the sidelines. The picker should start a contest and give a prize...everyone gets to select an average pts/game square starting at 20 and ending at 50. I want 48. GO TU!

Heard yesterday that Stoops is being much more hands on with the D-backs than he has the past few years. Could be a sign that Vulnerables is being trusted less and less. Could it be that Stoops is finally seeing that the D-backs havent understood Vulernables zone defensive scheme for the last 7 seasons? Maybe we wont see recievers purposely left with a 10 cushion on a regular basis!!

Real teams don't play their best running backs at linebacker.

Texas Tech ahead of Oklahoma State in the media poll is a joke.

Colorado has the toughest non-conference schedule in the history of college football: Colorado State, West Virginia, Florida State.

Sleeper of the year nationally is Nebraska.

There's never been a more wide-open football season: Ohio State can't compete with the elite. Florida has no defense and a quarterback one scramble away from intensive care. The University of Some Crooks (USC) is probably the best again, as it has about ten first-round draft picks ready to go each year.

So if TU maximizes its offensive plays, and a couple RBs go both ways, how long will they last if the opponent runs a hurry-up offense and thus maximizes the defensive plays?

Could make wind sprints feel like a stroll down memory lane all right.

Besides, where would they go when the offensive team has a meeting at the same time the defensive team has a meeting?

Alden: Trade Ju Ju for the WV fullback if you can't get OU to release Jenna in time for the Games in Peking.

Nitty,

First of all, you are agreeing with the Picker. Guess that therapy is working.

Second, if you had READ the TW article about the TU running backs, you would know they aren't playing both ways the entire game -- sounds more like 5-10 plays.

I agree, there is room for debate on the decision. My understanding is that Bailey found out from looking at the depth chart before media day (good work, by the way). I wonder how serious they really are about it.

Also, if you get a chance, check out the Tulsa rivals site for Herb Hand's comments regarding J Williams -- he's supposed to have a big year. With all that depth, there is as least reason to give it a chance.

One injury could wreck anybody's season.

Look at the Big 12 quarterbacks, best crop ever. Of course, none has much chance to play pro ball. But this is the heartland where toughness show more than big arms.

If any of the terrific Big 12 quarterbacks goes out with an injury, that team instantly goes from a national power to a likely chump. You want Missouri or OU or OSU or Tech or Texas without the starting qb? Oklahoma State is probably the silliest with its quarterback, running that guy so much.

Mr Jay Cronley, you completely gave yourself away on the radio today. World Picker is Jay Cronley. There is not one iota of doubt in my mind. (By the way, don't give up your day job. You are much funnier in print.)

I agree about the OU defense. There just isn't that intensity that was there when M. Stoops was coach. Anyone remember the A&M game in 2000 where Ontei Jones and Stoops almost threw down? That kind of intensity has been missing.

That, and always seeming to give up the deep bomb
Nit Picker (5 years ago)
TAB:

I have no current recollection of ever having agreed with World Picker. (My therapist says I probably never will either).

If I were to read the TW it could skew their demographics to the point they might be in serious financial trouble.

Let's do the math: 25 plays on offense, 10 additional plays on defense - this equates to 40% increase in plays for the player.

Run a 100 yards after practice=100%. 140% = running 140 yards after practice. I'm exhausted just typing it.

And I did all that without ever reading the TW.

See ya in the truck stop.

Memo to Robert at #3: "STOP THE PRESSES" - that's a real news flash ya got there, big man. Did you hear they landed a man on the moon, too? Pssst, here's another one for you: "SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!"
Robert (5 years ago)
Memo to Whoa Nellie - the post numbers work in reverse, first being last. Got it, big guy? Last post, first number.
TAB (5 years ago)
Nitty,

You agreed with the Picker about TU's running backs. Admit it.

Glad to know you are getting therapy.

Not going to the truck stops anytime soon -- used up the vacation for the year. But if I did ever meet you, I'd thank you for all your unintentional comedy over the years.
Nit Picker (5 years ago)
TAB: I can't believe you are out of vacation and it is only July-guess you won't be able to join me at any of the World Series games this year.

Unintentional comedy? Now that's really hilarious, whether you know it or not, TAB.

WP thinks ranking Taco Tech ahead of Boone State is comedy. I fail to see the humor-unless of course Crazy Mike's QB goes down.
