This time, let's have a West Virginia at OSU game which doesn't lead to "Grapes of Wrath"

West Virginia will play a football game in Stillwater for the first time since Oct. 26, 1929.

Curious what might have passed for “real world” news back then, I dug into some archives to see what headlines were on the weekend the Aggies last hosted the Mountaineers.

Three front-page stories jumped out at me in the Oklahoman’s archives:

1, Deputy sheriff J.L. Delaney did not take an elephant or camel into custody while seizing property to satisfy a legal judgment.

2, Washington football player Larry Westerweiler was standing on the sidelines with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders when he saw an Oregon player intercept a pass and race into the clear. Westerweiler ran onto the field and tackled the guy. Washington’s coach quickly conceded a touchdown before the refs could make a ruling.

3, And a headline said “Stock market normal again.” This proved to be a temporary thing.

The next Monday and next Tuesday came to be known as “Black Monday” and “Black Tuesday.” The stock market lost $30 billion in a two-day span. The crash led to the Great Depression and it was followed by the Dust Bowl, which led to many Oklahomans migrating to California and the word “Okie” becoming an insult, unless you are Merle Haggard.

This time around, let’s have a West Virginia-OSU game in Stillwater that doesn’t precede economic collapse. “Grapes of Wrath” was a heck of a book. I don’t want to read the sequel.

History could repeat itself with a Stock Market Crash following the OSU/WV game, just like the last time they met.
