This year, they ought to rename it the Siesta Bowl

Thank goodness for Kevin Wilson.

If he doesn't take the Indiana job, Bob Stoops doesn't hand Josh Heupel the keys to Oklahoma's offense for the Fiesta Bowl. And if that doesn't happen, there isn't a single reason to really dig into the Sooners-Huskies New Year's night game.

As it is, this is the least appealing OU bowl game since the 2005 Holiday. (The '09 Sun had Toby Gerhart at least.)

Or at least that was my read on it before scanning some bowl rankings. Maybe I was giving the 2011 Fiesta Bowl -- a.k.a. "Desert Snore" – a raw deal.

Mark Schlabach of ESPN.com ranks it No. 9 out of the 35 bowls. That's pretty strong, really.

Stewart Mandel of SI.com ranks it No. 11, writing: "So you figure the overmatched Huskies don't have a chance, right? Then either you've forgotten the Sooners' recent history against Fiesta Bowl underdogs or you've just seen UConn's offensive stats."

Actually, I've just seen UConn's stats. They average 145 passing yards per game. I know Jordan Todman is a really good running back. He'll get some numbers against the Sooners, just as Gerhart did in last year's Sun Bowl.

Short of 200, however, he doesn't give the Huskies the chance that Stanford had in El Paso.

Speaking of Todman, Pete Fiutak of CollegeFootballNews.com says he "might be the best running back in the country. There's a chance that he controls the game and the Huskies make this a shocker."

So why does Fiutak rank the Fiesta 16th of the 35 bowls? Michigan drubbed UConn 30-10.

"It might have been the opening game of the year," Fiutak writes, "but if the Huskies couldn't move the ball on Michigan, and if the offense is 96th in the nation… If OU gets up early, this won't be pretty."

Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News joins Mandel in ranking the Fiesta 11th. He also points out that Fiesta CEO John Junker "made 592,418 in 2008-09."

Which should prompt all of us to ask: How in the *@#! does a man whose job consists of flying to college football games to glad hand coaches and athletic directors pull that kind of coin?

My favorite Fiesta ranking is Mike Huguenin's on Rivals.com. He slots it at No. 21 and fires this shot: "The Sooners have stubbed their toe against perceived 'lesser' opponents in this bowl before. But stubbing your toe is one thing; lopping off your own foot is another."

Hey. It'll be a fun game to watch. Hopefully, the fellas will be fired up to make a good showing on both sides of the ball. It's a reward for winning the Big 12 Championship and they are supposed to have a good time, but it is all BUSINESS when the whistle blows.
UConn didn't get there by not being a pretty good team....and anything can happen in college football....like Appalachian State routing Michigan for example. And the Sooners have had a few embarrassing Bowl games in the recent past........they need to get ready to play....and play smart and hard.

For an automatic BCS bowl berth, the Big East is a joke, only slightly better than C-USA. UConn was horrible this year. If OU loses this game, or even barely wins, Stoops should resign.

Actually, I'm pretty sure UCONN *did* get there by not being a pretty good team.

How bad is UConn? Well, Bill Stewart gets replaced at WVU even though they may win 10 games this year. Why? Because Stewart managed to lose a game and the Big East conference title to a UConn team with very little talent. WVU expected to go undefeated this year, and they should have. Nobody in the Big East is good this year. I don't believe UConn could stay within three TDs of Tulsa. For crying out loud, they lost 30-10 to MICHIGAN!!! OU should win by 45 points.

UCONN got there for being 8-4. The Big East gets an automatic BCS slot, which needs to be addressed. Alabama gets a 2nd tier bowl against an 11-1 Michigan State. That is a far more compelling bowl game to watch in my opinion.

Graybeard, UConn actually DID get to the BCS bowl by not being very good. Their 8-4 record against the weaklings in the Big East is LAME! They'd have trouble beating Kansas or Iowa State in the Big 12. This is a gimme for OU, not at all similar to Boise State. If OU doesn't thrash them, the entire OU coaching staff should resign. The pundits are only rating it about the 10th best bowl game because it's a BCS bowl. In reality, it should be ranked maybe 20th to 25th, and then only because OU is playing in the game. Tulsa Union would give the Sooners a better game than UConn. OU 56, UConn 14...over by halftime.

Signalbob, you are correct. The three-time defending state champion Union Redskins WOULD give OU a better game than UConn (just ask Jenks). Union would spot OU a 21-3 lead (just like Jenks) then make a memorable comeback only to fall by the same score Union won by 2 weeks ago, 50-47.

I rank the top 5 state teams like this:

1) OU
2) Union
3) Tie-Jenks & OSU (Offenses are great but neither defense can cover a receiver in crunch time in a game that matters)
5) TU
Oklahomer (2 years ago)
What is the purpose of dragging Union and Jenks into this conversation? Neither of those high schools would give TU or OSU a good game.

Back to the topic: The Big East is represented in the BCS because of the power held by the heavily populated East coast. It has not earned an automatic place in the BCS bowls anymore than has the Mountain West or CUSA. That being said-- OU had no say in the matter of who they would be matched up with. The Big XII winner is committed to play in the Fiesta Bowl and that bowl had to choose last because of the NC game being played at that site a week later. No one else wanted UCONN and the Fiesta Bowl got stuck with them. Its like kids choosing up to play a sandlot game and someone gets stuck with the runt.

Because of OU's recent BCS history, Stoops will have no trouble getting his coaches and players to prepare for this game. There will be no talk of resignations after this game. OU will take care of business as they did in Bedlam and in the final Big XII championship game this season.
