Thoughts on the NFL Semifinals

Some thoughts on the NFL's Final Four weekend:
1, The Packers coach called a timeout at the end of regulation to "ice" the Giants kicker. How can you "ice" a kicker who is already frozen? Every player on the field was frozen. Incidentally, the kicker missed the field goal attempt, but it wasn't his fault because of a high snap. And he later made good on a game-winner in overtime.
2, Anybody else feel sorry for Brett Favre? When you've got that much grey hair, you don't get many more chances to get to the big game.
3, Amid all the fuss about New England's offense, one of the overlooked stories about the Patriots is how their red zone defense is fantastic. They would have lost perhaps three games if not for a defense that seems to always permit field goals instead of touchdowns. The Chargers had to kick field goals after driving to the 9 and 6.
4, Giants coach Tom Coughlin's face was as red as W.C. Fields' nose. Coughlin looks like a guy who has never had a day of fun in his life. He almost smiled -- almost -- when his kicker made a game-winner.
5, I'm happy for R.W. McQuarters, a fine representative of our city. I feared McQuarters might be scapegoated because he lost a fumble on an interception return and the fumble allowed Green Bay to tie the score at 20. But McQuarters avoided infamy and will live to play another day because his team survived.
