Three cheers for Sergio

Sergio Garcia isn't a failure.
That sentence needs to be thrown out there for public consumption.
Garcia led for three rounds at the British Open, missed a tournament-clinching putt on the final hole and then lost a playoff to a man named Padraig, which I suppose is the Euro translation of Patrick. Over there, perhaps they watched Padraig Ewing play "centre" for the Knicks.
But, back to the subject, finishing second at the British Open isn't a failure. It's an achievement. Garcia played against the best golfers in the universe and, through 72 holes, nobody had a better score.
That should be something to brag about. To hear some folks, you would think that Garcia missed the cut at Carnoustie.

I doubt if you ask Sergio if he feels good about blowing a 3 stroke lead in the final round of the British Open that he would say yes. And youre right, leading after three rounds is great, unfortunately they dont give out awards for that. If Sergio wants to be considered great, he is going to have to win, he knows it and so does everybody else. Nobody remembers second place. Another thing, instead of bragging Sergio has taken the path of complaining. He is not going to be a big time winner until he mans up and takes charge. You never hear Tiger talk about the bad bounces that cost him the tournament.

I give Sergio tons of credit for turning around his putting. I see good things for him now. It has been a disaster for some time. I haven't seen him putt so well for years. It's going to get interesting.

Sergio did put well, except when it mattered the most on Sunday. He got too conservative with the putter which cost him. It will be interesting to see if Sergio can continue his solid putting, alot of guys start off hot when switching to a new putting style and then cool down.

Jimmie...I love your blog and you know I deeply respect your sports opinions and knowledge, but I disagree with you on this one. In no way am I saying Sergio is a failure for what happened last Sunday, but for a guy who seems to be in more commercials than Payton Manning, we expect this fella to win a major at some point in time. The fact that he was set up to do it and let it get away is a sign that maybe he doesn't have that "it" factor ala Tiger, Phil, Ernie or some of the others that have won multiple majors. You are definitely correct in that Sergio has nothing to be embarassed about, but the guy, in my opinion, isn't living up to the lofty billing he has had thrown upon him. Enjoy listening to you on the radio and reading your stuff...the Alice Cooper article was excellent, keep up the great work!

Hey, Ryan. Good to hear from you. Neil Diamond still rocks and I wonder if European golfers have a glandular issue that causes them to wear crazy-colored trousers.
