Thunder Ace on Broadway?

Here's the problem with the Thunder: nothing.

It's a very good NBA team, with one of the top five players in the league, Durant, and one of best the second or third five players in the league, Westbrook.

It's not a great team.

Here's the problem with the media covering the Thunder on a regular basis: everything.

Whereas you can inherit a really good NBA team, you can't inherit analytical skills. The media covering the Thunder is the same crew that was covering submarine races at Lake Hefner just before. For the most part, the Thunder media thinks the OKC team is going to win a NBA title this year.

From the outset, we have seen one crucial problem area: inside scoring.

The Thunder doesn't get much post play and has to work too hard for its points.

When Perkins came in a trade, the OKC media said he was the missing piece to a championship. We said: Huh? What are you looking at?

Perkins is an all right player. These stats of his were taken from the Thunder web page: 4.7 points per game, 5.7 rebounds, 44 percent field goal shooting. We're not saying we could average 5 points a game. But we might. For the Thunder to contend for a championship, somebody needs to step it up inside, big time.

Last night, Griffin of the Clippers did not posterize the OKC inside player. That dunk belongs on the big screen in NYC. He was Times Squared.

Mr. Picker, you lament the fact that, "somebody needs to step it up inside" for the Thunder to have success. I'll volunteer to do just that. Will you represent me in the contract negotiations? I'll give you five percent........

Gene-O, I'd be proud to represent you, I can get you $8 mil per year, and all you have to do is make two baskets per game. By the way, have you seen "Luck?" on HBO? It's slower than one of those claimers you bet.

Mr. Picker, my television machine will not watch anything but "Maddow" in that time slot. Since you reminded me I'm going to record the pilot this Friday. By the way, another writer has already made a prediction on how the series will end so I know how to bet it. Last Saturday my horoscope said Lady Luck was going to be with me and I had very nice time with the Santa Anita racecard. Can't wait for next Saturday to roll around.

Mr. Picker,
Have you noticed how ridiculous the Thunder TV announcers are. They are such homers. They were going crazy after the win at Portland, as if they'd just won the NBA Title.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
