Thunder Blunder?
Published: 4/5/2011 2:40 PM
Last Modified: 4/5/2011 2:40 PM

When the Thunder traded two pretty nice players to Boston for inside man Perkins, Hee Haw Radio in Oklahoma City, and others, sang glory be, a dynasty was born, the missing piece was in place, the team was complete, the GM could do no wrong.

Except draft the Kansas guy.

Yeah, well: What is Perkins averaging, six, seven minutes? Six, seven points?

True, he can D up in side. But there doesn't appear to be a lot of scoring potential low down.

But the last time we looked, Danny Ainge of Boston was nobody's sucker.

Could it be the Thunder is too much of an outside team?

Does the Thunder need much, much more scoring inside?

Might Denver be a real threat to take out the OKC team in the first round of the playoffs?

off topic:
so who are you pickin to win the masters.....i was hoping you would duplicate your 1982 pick of Ray Floyd for the PGA title.....hard to imagine that was nearly 30 years ago.

After watching some ten or so games this year, the Thunder is an improved team. Their defense has improved - both within the paint as well as the perimeter. They no longer have to double-team opposing power forwards and centers. Nazr, Kendrick, and Serge can hold their own one-on-one. This allows Durant and co. the luxury of focusing on the 3-point line.

Perkins is averaging 25 minutes and nearly 8 rebounds per game with the Thunder. Honestly, where do you come up with "averaging six, seven minutes"?
Have you watched any Thunder games this year? Have you noticed that the trade allowed Serge Ibaka to become a starter, and he is averaging 12 points and 9 rebounds a game in that role? Have you also noticed that Jeff Green's absence has allowed James Harden to play more minutes, and Harden is now averaging 17 points per game since the trade? Have you noticed that the Thunder have gone 14-6 since the trade, including a franchise best 14-2 during the entire month of March?
By the way, Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic are each averaging less than 10 points per game with the Celtics, and the Celtics are only 12-7 since the trade. Why don't you read what the Boston sportswriters are saying about Danny Ainge?

Naz Muhammad was the best part of the trade so far. Agree that the Thunder is missing some inside scoring and they are pushing out harder on Westbbrook, Harden, and Durant. Also, none of our frontline players are scoring threats outside or inside. No kickouts or keeping the defense from sagging. Durant & Westbrook are taking much harder & more contested shots.

When Perkins gets a defensive rebound he needs to throw outlet passes much quicker. he looks like he's in slow motion and we are now always walking the ball up the court instead of getting mismatches and numbers.
Westbrook and Durant are open court players.

Zaphod, how dare you bring actual statistics in to support your argument?!

This is not the blog for that and it will not be tolerated!

Slow day for the Picker I guess... they just beat the hottest team in the west at their place where they had won 10 straight. Perkins had 14 rebounds and, more than that, made sure Nugget bad boy Nene couldnt do anything he wanted to. Maybe Sam Presti is no one's sucker either. You can name the really good low post scorers in the NBA on one hand. As Kilgore said, the steal of the trade was Nazr Mahammed (sp?). Pick: who in the league has 4 legit big men in their rotation AND a two-headed superstar in the backcourt? With the emergence of Harden now that he is getting real minutes, the Thunder have all the pieces. It might not happen this year but KD is all of 22 years old...I think they have time on their side.

That same Nugget team they beat down last night? I think Sam Presti has done a great job of building a strong team. Scott Brooks doesnt ask Perkins to score. He is asked to rebound and put the trash back in and play defense. Thats what they pay him for and I think he is getting it done.
okc larry (last year)
unfortunately, OKC cannot just go through the NBA and pick up who they want. have to trade for and/or pick up what is available. have they been perfect? obviously not, no one is. (my complaint has been and will continue to be harden/curry). was perkins trade bad? right up until they signed perkins to extension, yeah. had traded two offensive players, 1 they could not sign for 1 defensive player they had not signed (and boston could not sign).

as soon as he signed for long term. awesome. perkins still recovering from bad injury last year and minor scope this year. stamina will come. would nene have been better? sure, but not available. who else better and available--no one.

if westbrook learns how to pass consistently, perkins and nazr will score more. as long as he is committed to being an all star, regardless of team record, and takes air out of ball, they are limited.

Big PERK is doing just fine & what did the Celtics receive, a big tall woman & a skinny boy....

Nazr Muhammad was obtained in a separate trade with Charlotte, & he is doing just fine himself....

I watch every televised game the Thunder play, which means, all of them & the THUNDER are doing just fine....

They have problems with 22yo's making mistakes but the 22yo's are coachable & now thay have team leaders in Big Brother PERK & Uncle Nazr to go along with former biggest brother Nick....

The kids are allright & they will win a CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR !!!! They can & will BEAT L.A. this time around.... They grew up even more last night in Denver when they realized they have nothing to fear because Big Perk ain't scared, neither is Nazr, Nick, or SERGE, so why should anyone else be....

okc larry: who is Steph Curry gonna guard? He weighs about 165 lbs.... Harden is playing great defense and is built like an NFL tailback and is averaging 17 ppg since the trade...

I never thought I would see the Day that the Picker would write even a blog about the NBA!

What's next a column on soccer?
The Picker (last year)
I see Perkins got his standard six last night.

Te question is this: Is the trade turning out to be as good as originally predicted? Versus the Lakers (and the Denver series is a toss-up!), won't some points be needed inside?

In the Masters, (come in Gene!), I'll take the Euros.

I have a considerable wager among gentlemen on Tiger going 0-4 in the majors this year, so all coins in the fountain will be approciated. The Masters will probably be his best shot.
D-MANN (last year)
The trade was a calculated risk (aren't they all) for a lot of reasons, but OKC wasn't going anywhere with the roster as it existed prior to the trading deadline. They still probably aren't a threat to win the title without 2 additional pieces. Ibaka needs to continue his development into a low post scorer. Also, with Sefolosha in the game, now there to few offensive options out there. This is where the trade truly hurt. You love Sefolosha's defense, but his offensive liability without having Green as an option is a glaring weakness. Overall though, great moves. It's good to see the rebounding and defensive toughness that playoff teams have to have.
dcood (last year)
IN regards to Sefolosha, is there an NBA starting 5 where all 5 are a threat to score?...didnt think so...
D-MANN (last year)
Again Sefolosha isn't necessarily a problem. However, anyone with Perkins and Ibaka in the lineup loses the luxury of having a defensive stopper but offensive liability as their "shooting guard"
Oklahomer (last year)
Since this picker perspective, the Thunder have beaten the Nuggets twice. The rebounding and defensive play of Perkins and Mohammed (not to mention the play of Ibaka and Collison) have raised the level of the Thunder. I like their chances of beating the Nuggets early and then getting a rest before taking on the Spurs. There is no better 2-deep rotation at every position in the league. I liked Krstic and Green, but the new "bigs" have given the Thunder a shot of getting to the finals.
signalbob (last year)
Picker, once again you are wandering in the wilderness! Last I checked, the Thunder had the 7th best record in the league, HCA in the 1st round of the playoffs, and could win as many as 56 games! Yeah, they're really hurting!
Edgar, Norman (last year)
Hey Picker, you should join Jim and Al on heehaw radio for the dominant duo. They're never right about anytnig either.
Sooner Hawg (last year)
Yeah. Thunder beats Lakers by 14 points last night at the Staples Center.
Yep. Big blunder. LOL.

The picker is a huge joke!!

zaphod (last year)
The Picker is obviously way off of the mark on this one, but I don't care that his opinion of the Thunder is absurd. Such uniformed opinions are innate components of an editorial column, like this one.

The thing that bothers me is that he writes factually incorrect things, and then offers no correction or retraction. The Sports Editor also does not correct such mistakes. The claim that Kendrick Perkins averages six or seven minutes is factually untrue.

If the Tulsa World continues allowing these errors to be published, I will not renew my TW subscription.
jlbrpt (last year)
There's a good reason that The Picker isn't an NBA General Manager and Sam Presti is. Since Kendrick Perkins started playing, the Thunder have won 13 of the last 17 regular season games. During the last regular season game the starters were rested for most of the game. In that stretch, they've beaten the Nuggets twice at home and on the road, who've been one of the toughest teams for OKC to beat. The Thunder also beat the Lakers by 14 points in the Staples Center and Miami by 11 points at American Airlines Arena. The Thunder is also up 2 games to none against the Nuggets, making it 15 of the last 19 games won.
