Thunder Road?
Published:

Yesterday I took another cheap shot at the Thunder NBA team in OKC.
Somebody wrote and asked why so many cheap shots were taken, jealousy?
Yeah, that's it, I want to move to OKC. Right after I get back from my vacation in Siberia.
Here's why the Thunder qualifies for cheap shots.
It plays no regular season games in Tulsa.
Talk about a bad attitude.
Oklahoma City is a pretty lucky wide spot on the flats, with strong civic leadership.
Some businessmen come up the Pike thinking they're doing us a favor with a WNBA team. Please. It's such an opportunity, go ahead and keep it. Put it in Edmond.
The Oklahoma City media is so bad it's funny, acting like it is suddenly big league when it is in fact the same bunch of yahoos it always was, it just gets to cover Kobe now and again.
Not playing a game here is rude and stupid.
Southern Hills golf majors are ten times bigger than anything the Thunder has done to date.
OKC is the new Memphis.
Period.

I hope the WNBA places the team in OKC....
Then they can play exhibition games in Tulsa....

Well said,Picker. OKC is a hick town and deserves the Thunder down Thunder Road, oops, I meant the turnpike.

Spot on evaluation regarding OKC becoming a "big league city." Sometimes I feel that the main reason OKC wanted a basketball team was so they could lord it over Tulsa and finally gain the upper hand. I also loved it how they tenaciously fought for the team to be known as "OKC" instead of Oklahoma, because they earned it. Just like they "earned" the designation as the capitol city after stealing it from Guthrie. Well congrats on the NBA team OKC, but your drainage ditch still has fecal matter in it. No more triathlons please!

Way to go, Picker! Drove through your old 'hood the other day. Fortunately, most of the people who live in central Oklahoma don't actually have to go into OKC except perhaps to work. They live in Edmond or one of the other good places around there. OKC is mostly a pit any more. And I grew up there.

Picker...been awhile since I checked in. Surprised to see fewer detractors than sycophants checking in. Being a Tulsan myself and since you're writing in a Tulsa periodical (online notwithstanding), your bent on OKC is understandable. But be careful...the faint odor of sour grapes just might be discernable...

Man, Tulsa is where I live and it gets really annoying to see the immaturity Tulsans generally have. OK not ALL Tulsans. Just the picker. Everyone should know that the OKC media had a column on TULSAS WNBA team BEFORE Tulsa World did. Something that is rude is that Tulsa World doesn't even have a Thunder sports page. Now I know why. Just accept the fact that Tulsa is prettier than OKC but OKC is bigger, and will probably always be the dominant city. Be the Buffalo to our New York. The OKC media is better than the Tulsa media too. The Picker is just jealous that he doesn't get to cover an NBA game.

All of my impressions of OKC have been excellent. Tulsa has a chance to do something. Elect a better mayor, someone who has REAL pride not someone who is proud cause Tulsa lost more weight than OKC in some challenge. Oh yeah, almost forgot. Get your own NBA team if you want someone to play a regular season home game in the space ship. OKC doesn't want to bring down their average attendance.

Picker,
Nobody in OKC cares if people come down from Tulsa to a Thunder game. The 18K + that attend every game will make more than enough noise.
Point being, Tulsa is irrelevant in the Thunder equation. 90% of season tickets and general admission are made up of OKC, Edmond, Norman, Yukon, Mustang, MWC, and Del City residents.
Oh well, least OKC leadership and money has made the effort to throw you the WNBA bone.
Remember (check your archives) last July I told you the WNBA was coming and being funded by a businessman in OKC.
If OKC is the new Memphis, I guess Tulsa is the new Detroit. A washed up has been.
Stay Classy Tulsa!

OKC is not lucky. We succeed based on the character of our people, to that point we are a shining example for many cities.
Some friendly advice to my Tulsa friends since I lived in T-Town for 8 years.
Look yourself in the mirror and take responsiblity for your lack of progress. To many of you have the shi*** attitude that you are better than everyone and you continue to ignore your own problems.
Unite and make a difference instead of hiding your insecurity with your bashing of OKC.
I have never seen more crap spewed about another city than what comes out of your media.
A couple of months back in the Urban Tulsa that was highlighting your young people in downtown, and the UT decided to pring a handful of quotes about how Tulsa isn't OKC and how crappy those interviewed thought OKC was....
Totally classless and a perfect example of my point above. Guess it is more of the same for the future of Tulsa.

I find it ironic that the reason that Clay Bennet gives as to why the Thunder can not play a regular season game in Tulsa is that they say they have a lease/contract with the Ford Center…Isn’t that what they did to get out of Seattle, break the lease/contract they had with the city and the Key Arena to move to OKC? No matter what they say, the Thunder could care less about the Tulsa support. Which I think in a few years they are going to regret.

Memphis is the crime capitol of the USA. And Okie City is not far behind. I recently drove through some neighborhoods where I had a paper route. Where I rode my bicycle to a movie. Not today, my friend! Large sections of OKC are so poverty and crime ridden that no ordinary person of any color would want to live there. So, where does the money originate? A lot of it comes from folks in Tulsa. And a lot more from the federal government. I am glad I do not live in Oklahoma City!

nomosoetero,
Fact. Tulsa has more per capita crime than OKC
Fact. Tulsa has had more violent crime and murders than OKC the last 5 years.
Fact. 4 of the 10 wealthiest zip codes in the state are in OKC. 2 are in Tulsa.
I guess you haven't bothered to drive around 31st garnett, north peoria, south peoria, 15th and Sheridan?
Your ignorance shows when you paint all of OKC in the same light. Of course their are bad areas. However, Tulsa has more than it's fair share of bad areas.

JG..speaking of ignorance....please learn to spell correctly. "there" instead of "their", and "its" instead of "it's". I drive all over Tulsa. Please don't display your stupidity and your ignorance at the same time. My statements stand on their own. Your facts are wrong and cannot stand on "there" own. And ZIP codes have nothing to do with wealth or crime or any of that. I challenge you to provide us with those "wealthy" ZIP codes. Bet they are not in Okie City, but out in the boonies.

Go by and take a look at my old neighborhood. Take North Walker to N.W. 29th Street and look around. But don't stay too long, and don't get out of your car and walk around. Or how about North Blackwelder at about N.W. 34th Street. Same warning applies!

Don't forget the giant OKC diet plan...a civic effort to fit their wide butts into those tiny Ford Center seats!

"Your ignorance shows when you paint all of OKC in the same light. Of course THEIR are bad areas. However, Tulsa has more than IT'S fair share of bad areas."
I love when a person points out another's ignorance and then turns around and commits numerous grammatical errors.
Seriously though, why would the Thunder come to Tulsa? They have great attendance in OKC, advertising has already been set for all the games in OKC, and Tulsa hasn't done anything to prove that it can be a sports town.
Tulsa is more of a "one-time event" city. The PGA does well when it comes because it isn't here on a weely basis. The Drillers, Talons, Oilers, and 66ers have never had great attendance on a regular basis.
Pick only says he wants the Thunder to come to Tulsa. The truth is he'd rather they never come so that he'll have something he can constantly whine about. Because if they did come for a game and Tulsa didn't have at least 18,000 in attendance, it would absolutely crush his argument.

I personally don't think Tulsa is a very supportive sports town. Not only do all the minor league sports not draw well on a consistent basis, but both TU sports (with a possible exception for TU football) and ORU sports have pitiful attendance numbers. I'm not jealous that OKC has an NBA team and Tulsa doesn't because I know Tulsans would struggle to support it. Tulsans on average have very little civic pride, even though IMO we have MUCH to proud of. Hopefully all of the Tulsa haters continue to transplant themselves to Broken Arrow and we prideful Tulsans can get back to the business of bettering our city.
As an aside, I believe the only type of major league sports that could do well in Tulsa are the alternative fringe sports. I would LOVE to get an MLS team, and believe that to be a feasible and reachable goal for Tulsa. Plus we could bring back the best team name in sports history: the Roughnecks!

nomo,
Actually I have. I live in Heritage Hills. Yes it is a depressed area. However, 23rd st is in the midst of a revival. The Paseo arts district is flourishing and recently had two restauraunts in the top 100 in the country. MidTown near St. Anthony is looking great and the classen corridor is taking off.
Top Zip codes based on income 73116, 73142 , 73126, 73154. 116 and 142 average household income is over 150K and 126 and 154 is over 1M. However, that is scewed because of the small amount of households.
Zip codes do have a lot to do with the area and the perception of crime income, because they define the area and allow you to look at where crime and income are disbursed.
Otherwise, you are making an assumption. Just look at the facts.
I own you.

What is more alternative than a bunch of women who live an alternative lifestyle playing basketball ?
I know that all ain't that way, but a good percentage are, just like softball players....
I believe that the WNBA will have continued growth and their league will improve as their players do....The interest of H.S. women's basketball in rural areas is great, which is what people in Tulsa know nothing about. I was in OKC for the state basketball championships and there were a lot of fans there cheering on the girls....
In Tulsa, h.s. sports is not supported, except by Jenks & Union....So there is no concept of a fan base, the kids grow up bitter because their families can't drive 10 miles to see them play & they grow into adults with foul temperaments who pass it on to their kids....
Nah, Tulsa doesn't need anything that makes them smile because fun is foreign concept to them overall....
Let the WNBA go to OKC where they view tomorrow as another day to live & breathe the joys of life, so what if their CITY ain't purty, they do have something to do besides dwell on what they don't have....

all of the zip codes listed are either in the NW corridor or NE corridor. 73170 is in the top 10 and is in SW OKC.
If you are aguing a lack of wealth you are wrong. If you want to argue it is not centrally located to Downtown, then you are correct.
