Thunder: We're Number Three
Published: 8/10/2012 3:36 PM

It now goes something like this.
1. Miami.
2. Lakers.
3. Thunder.
Here is the way most if not every single one of the NBA champs made it to the top: Trades.
Great trades.
You can only get so good or lucky, or both, with draft picks. Something is always missing.
Look at the Bulls, Boston, the Lakers, Miami, they all took the final step to the top with blockbuster trades.
Forget long-term we're great talk, it's bunk. Injuries happen. Differences of opinion happen.
In the NBA, the future is always now.
After what the Lakers did to get Howard, the Thunder is worse off than when the season ended. The Thunder is in trouble inside.
Despite homer talk, the Perkins trade was a near bust, particularly on offense.
The "genius" Thunder GM has drafted great, KU center excepted.
But he has not yet made the mark as the architect of a champion.
You can't sit still and count your runnerup trophies.
Everybody else is out trading.

Pick, tell us the trade to be made.

Bigger question is, who do we trade away? Draft picks? KD? Sounds easy in print, real life becomes another story.

The Thunder needs big time help inside.

The problem is that OKC is not a destination that players want to play. The only way to get good in a market like Oklahoma City is to hit the jackpot in the draft and that's exactly what the Thunder have done.

You will never see guys like Dwight Howard or LeBron demanding a trade to OKC...not happening. In other words, enjoy the run with KD, Russ and Harden because when it's over, it's over.

Golden winning covers up what stinks and the Thunder is winning. Keep winning and players will want to play for OKC. OKC baby!

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
