Tiger Confirms Pick

Welcome to the hottest sports blog site around, with readers and responders checking in from the sands of Iraq all the way to the to the grottos of LA, and many points between.

Two of the most electric topics of the summer have been whether or not Tiger is the greatest golfer ever, and whether or not departed coach Gus, and his magnificent offense, was primarily responsible for TU's recent success.

Our answer to the greatest golfer ever was: Jack Nicklaus.

Our first thought about TU this year was it would be full-out to finish above .500.

The responses were numerous and contained many exclamation points.

Well, yesterday at the U. S. Open in New York, Tiger was asked if he was the best golfer ever.

He said no.

He was then asked who was.

He said, "Jack."

Nicklaus has won 18 majors, Tiger is at 14.

When Tiger has 19 majors, he's the best.

Simple.

And in its pre-pre-season issue, the Sporting News predicted TU to have a 7-6 record.

If Tiger goes with the Picker, so should you.

1. I agree with you on Jack Nicklaus as the best golfer ever, as of right now. Let's not forget that, along with his 18 major titles, he had finished runner-up in majors 19 times in his golfing career.
2. As for the Tulsa football team, they play a difficult schedule this year.
Their toughest games are as follows:
at OU, at Rice, vs. Boise State, vs. Houston, vs. East Carolina, and at Southern Miss. Those are six games that they could easily lose. Five of the Six teams can put up points in a hurry, and Tulsa has not proven to be a very good defensive team. It's not unreasonable to think TU could go 7-6 this year.

Mr. Picker, you can have a "Best Ever" in golf every decade but because of radical changes in balls, equipment and courses you can't have a "Best Ever". In every other sport the dimensions and fields are teh same as when the game started. Tell me the name of a golf course which hasn't been changed by added length in just the last ten years. Look at the clubs you used when you got out of college and see if they look like the equipment today. So . . . the real question is who won the most majors and that answer (for the time being) is "Jack." One more thing, if the Best Ever were a reliable measure it would be Bobby Jones. He did more in his short amateur career than Jack and Tiger combined.

Dear Picks, I will wager one non-self indulgent blog that TU finishes with 8> wins this year.....

Gene:

So Tiger's playing with the new equipment but Lefty and Sergio aren't? I guess that means Bobby Jones (yes, probably the best) would drive the ball about 650 yards with today's clubs.

BobSmith007, I didn't single Tiger out as having the most benefit from new equipment. When one competes for that much $$$$$ it would be foolish not to use the newest/best. Bobby Jones probably wouldn't hit it farther than the players today but he would win his share. When you go to golf school you are shown the classic films Bobby Jones made on the swing, etc. so it must have been pretty sound. Wouldn't it be fun to turn back the clock and have Bobby and Jack, both at age 35, play Tiger on Sunday at Bethpage?

Jack is the best NOW. Nobody disputed that the last time you made this rant, Pick. Tiger WILL BE the greatest ever, though. 5 majors is all he needs? I'm thinking he'll get that in the next 5 years.

Airblair: That's quite a price you're asking on your angle. Eight before a bowl or counting a bowl? I'll give you the bowl, you're on, I say TU tops out at seven, total.

The only generational note that applies is Tiger is playing against a bunch of sissies; Jack had to defeat actual men.

Count South Korea in the all points in between

"The only generational note that applies is Tiger is playing against a bunch of sissies; Jack had to defeat actual men."

One can also argue that the other way and say that Tiger makes them look like sissies whereas Jack played closer to his competition's level.

The point is that it is impossible to determine.

Could the best golfer in the history of mankind be about to miss the cut?

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
